ThomsonWHEN Kore son of Issaar, son of Kaath, son of Levi, spoke, backed by Dathan and Abiron, the son of Eliab, and by Aun, son of Phaleth, son of Reuben,—

Thomsonwhen they rose up against Moses, with two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, leaders of the congregation, eminent for a counsel and men of renown—
Brentonand rose up before Moses, and two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, chiefs of the assembly, chosen councillors, and men of renown.

Thomsonwhen they rose in a body against Moses and Aaron, and said, Be it known to you that the whole congregation are holy, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you set yourselves against the congregation of the Lord?
BrentonThey rose up against Moses and Aaron, and said, Let it be enough for you that all the congregation are holy, and the Lord is among them; and why do ye set up yourselves against the congregation of the Lord?

Thomsonand spoke to Kore, and to all his company, saying, God hath seen and known who are his, and who are holy, and hath brought them near to himself. Even those whom he chose he hath brought near to himself.
BrentonAnd he spoke to Core and all his assembly, saying, God has visited and known those that are his and who are holy, and has brought them to himself; and whom he has chosen for himself, he has brought to himself.

Thomsonand put fire therein, and lay incense thereon before the Lord to-morrow. And let the man whom the Lord hath chosen be the holy man. Let this suffice you, ye sons of Levi.
Brentonand put fire on them, and put incense on them before the Lord to-morrow; and it shall come to pass that the man whom the Lord has chosen, he shall be holy: let it be enough for you, ye sons of Levi.

ThomsonIs this a small thing to you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from among the congregation of Israel, and brought you near to himself, to perform the holy services of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to attend before the tabernacle to perform them?
BrentonIs it a little thing for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, and brought you near to himself to minister in the services of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the tabernacle to minister for them?
GreekΜὴ μικρόν ἐστι τοῦτο ὑμῖν, ὅτι διέστειλεν ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ ὑμᾶς ἐκ συναγωγῆς Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ προσηγάγετο ὑμᾶς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν λειτουργεῖν τᾶς λειτουργίας τῆς σκηνῆς Κυρίου, καὶ παρίστασθαι ἔναντι τῆς σκηνῆς λατρεύειν αὐτοῖς;

ThomsonHe hath indeed brought thee near, and all thy brethren the children of Levi with thee. And do you seek in this manner to officiate also as priests—
Brentonand he has brought thee near and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee, and do ye seek to be priests also?

ThomsonThou and all this thy company who are tumultuously assembled before God? As for Aaron, who is he that you murmur against Him?
BrentonThus it is with thee and all thy congregation which is gathered together against God: and who is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?
GreekΟὕτως σὺ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγή σου ἡ συνηθροισμένη πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· καὶ Ἀαρὼν τίς ἐστιν, ὅτι διαγογγύζετε κατʼ αὐτοῦ;

ThomsonIs it a small matter that thou hast been bringing us up to a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in this wilderness, that thou tyrannisest over us? Thou art a chief!

ThomsonAnd thou hast brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey! and hast given us a portion of land, and vineyards! Fain wouldst thou put out the eyes of these men! We will not go up.
BrentonThou art a prince, and hast thou brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and hast thou given us an inheritance of land and vineyards? wouldest thou have put out the eyes of those men? we will not go up.

ThomsonUpon this Moses was greatly incensed, and said to the Lord, Respect not their sacrifice. I have not taken from any of them an object of desire, nor have I injured any of them.
BrentonAnd Moses was exceedingly indignant, and said to the Lord, Do thou take no heed to their sacrifice: I have not taken away the desire of any one of them, neither have I hurt any one of them.
GreekΚαὶ ἐβαρυθύμησε Μωυσῆς σφόδρα, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς Κύριον, μὴ πρόσχῃς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν αὐτῶν· οὐκ ἐπιθύμημα οὐδενὸς αὐτῶν εἴληφα, οὐδὲ ἐκάκωσα οὐδένα αὐτῶν.

ThomsonAnd when every one had taken his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense on it, and Moses and Aaron stood at the doors of the tabernacle of the testimony;
BrentonAnd each man took his censer, and they put on them fire, and laid incense on them; and Moses and Aaron stood by the doors of the tabernacle of witness.

Thomsonand Kore had collected against them all his company, at the doors of the tabernacle of the testimony, the glory of the Lord appeared to the whole congregation.
BrentonAnd Core raised up against them all his company by the door of the tabernacle of witness; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπισυνέστησεν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς Κορὲ τὴν πᾶσαν αὐτοῦ συναγωγὴν παρὰ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου· καὶ ὤφθη ἡ δόξα Κυρίου πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ.

ThomsonSeparate yourselves from among this congregation, and I will consume them all at once.

Greekἀποσχίσθητε ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς ταύτης, καὶ ἐξαναλώσω αὐτοὺς εἰσάπαξ.

ThomsonAt this they fell on their faces and said, O God, the God of the spirits, even of all flesh! If one man hath sinned, is the wrath of the Lord against the whole congregation?
BrentonAnd they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of spirits and of all flesh, if one man has sinned, shall the wrath of the Lord be upon the whole congregation?
GreekΚαὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν, καὶ εἶπαν, Θεὸς, Θεὸς τῶν πνευμάτων καὶ πάσης σαρκὸς, εἰ ἄνθρωπος εἷς ἥμαρτεν, ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν συναγωγὴν ὀργὴ Κυρίου;

ThomsonSpeak to the congregation, and say, Withdraw all around from the congregation of Kore.

ThomsonAccordingly Moses, arose, and went to Dathan and Abiron; and all the elders of Israel accompanied him.
BrentonAnd Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiron, and all the elders of Israel went with him.
GreekΚαὶ ἀνέστη Μωυσῆς, καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρὼν, καὶ συνεπορεύθησαν μετʼ αὐτοῦ πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonAnd he spoke to the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves from the tents of these wicked men, and touch not any of the things which belong to them, lest you be consumed with them in their sins.

ThomsonAnd when they had drawn back, all around, from the tent of Kore, Dathan and Abiron came out, and stood at the doors of their tents, with their wives and their children, and their attendants.
BrentonAnd they stood aloof from the tent of Core round about; and Dathan and Abiron went forth and stood by the doors of their tents, and their wives and their children and their store.
GreekΚαὶ ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς σκηνῆς Κορὲ κύκλῳ· καὶ Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρὼν ἐξῆλθον, καὶ εἱστήκεισαν παρὰ τὰς θύρας τῶν σκηνῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡ ἀποσκευὴ αὐτῶν.

ThomsonAnd Moses said, By this you shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works, and that they are not of myself:—
BrentonAnd Moses said, Hereby shall ye know that the Lord has sent me to perform all these works, that I have not done them of myself.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς, ἐν τούτῳ γνώσεσθε ὅτι Κύριος ἀπέστειλέ με ποιῆσαι πάντα τὰ ἔργα ταῦτα, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπʼ ἐμαυτοῦ.

ThomsonIf these men die the common death of all men; or if their visitation be according to the visitation of all men, the Lord hath not sent me:
BrentonIf these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.
GreekΕἰ κατὰ θάνατον πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἀποθανοῦνται οὗτοι, εἰ καὶ κατʼ ἐπίσκεψιν πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἐπισκοπὴ ἔσται αὐτῶν, οὐχὶ Κύριος ἀπέσταλκέ με.

Thomsonbut if the Lord demonstrate by a miracle, and the earth opening its mouth, shall swallow up them and their households, and their tents, and all that belong to them; and they go down alive to the mansion of the dead; then you will know that these men have provoked the Lord.
BrentonBut if the Lord shall shew by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.
GreekἈλλʼ ἢ ἐν φάσματι δείξει Κύριος, καὶ ἀνοίξασα ἡ γῆ τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς καταπίεται αὐτοὺς, καὶ τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰς σκηνὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς, καὶ καταβήσονται ζῶντες εἰς ᾅδου, καὶ γνώσεσθε, ὅτι παρώξυναν οἱ ἄνθρωποι οὗτοι τὸν Κύριον.

ThomsonAnd when he had made an end of speaking all these words, the earth was rent under them;
BrentonAnd when he ceased speaking all these words, the ground clave asunder beneath them.
GreekὩς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους, ἐῤῥάγη ἡ γῆ ὑποκάτω αὐτῶν.

Thomsonand the earth opened; and it swallowed up them, and their households, and all the men who were with Kore, and all their cattle.
BrentonAnd the ground opened, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that were with Core, and their cattle.
GreekΚαὶ ἠνοίχθη ἡ γῆ, καὶ κατέπιεν αὐτοὺς, καὶ τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν, καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς ὄντας μετὰ Κορὲ, καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν.

ThomsonAnd they, and all that belonged to them, went down alive to the mansions of the dead, and the earth covered them. And they were destroyed from among the congregation.
BrentonAnd they went down and all that they had, alive into Hades; and the ground covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.
GreekΚαὶ κατέβησαν αὐτοὶ, καὶ ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτῶν ζῶντα εἰς ᾅδου, καὶ ἐκάλυψεν αὐτοὺς ἡ γῆ, καὶ ἀπώλοντο ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς.

ThomsonAnd all the Israelites who were around them fled at their cry; for they said, Perhaps the earth may swallow us up.
BrentonAnd all Israel round about them fled from the sound of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
GreekΚαὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ οἱ κύκλῳ αὐτῶν ἔφυγον ἀπὸ τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῶν, ὅτι λέγοντες, μή ποτε καταπίῃ ἡμᾶς ἡ γῆ.

ThomsonAnd there went forth a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men, who were offering incense!
BrentonAnd fire went forth from the Lord, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
GreekΚαὶ πῦρ ἐξῆλθε παρὰ Κυρίου, καὶ κατέφαγε τοὺς πεντήκοντα καὶ διακοσίους ἄνδρας τοὺς προσφέροντας τὸ θυμίαμα.
