BrentonAlleluia. Give thanks to the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever.
GreekἈλληλούϊα. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ, ὅτι χρηστὸς, ὅτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonSing to Him and sing with instrumental music; relate all His wonderous works.
BrentonWho shall tell the mighty acts of the Lord? who shall cause all his praises to be heard?
GreekΤίς λαλήσει τὰς δυναστείας τοῦ Κυρίου, ἀκουστὰς ποιήσει πάσας τὰς αἰνέσεις αὐτοῦ;

ThomsonSing praises to His holy name. Let the heart of them, who seek the Lord, be glad.
BrentonBlessed are they that keep judgment, and do righteousness at all times.

ThomsonSeek the Lord and be confirmed in strength; seek His face continually.
BrentonRemember us, O Lord, with the favour thou hast to thy people: visit us with thy salvation;

ThomsonRemember His wonders which He hath done; His miracles and the judgments of His mouth.
Brentonthat we may behold the good of thine elect, that we may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that we may glory with thine inheritance.

ThomsonO ye seed of Abraham, His servants—ye children of Jacob, His chosen ones;
BrentonWe have sinned with our fathers, we have transgressed, we have done unrighteously.

ThomsonHe is the Lord, our God, in all this land are His judgments.
BrentonOur fathers in Egypt understood not thy wonders, and remembered not the multitude of thy mercy; but provoked him as they went up by the Red Sea.

ThomsonHe remembered forever His covenant—a word which He gave in charge for a thousand generations:

Thomsonthe covenant which He made with Abraham, and that oath of His to Isaak,
BrentonAnd he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: so he led them through the deep as through the wilderness.

Thomsonwhich He confirmed to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant—
BrentonAnd he saved them out of the hand of them that hated them, and redeemed them out of the hand of the enemy.

Thomsonsaying, To thee I will give the land of Chanaan to be the lot of your inheritance.
BrentonThe water covered those that oppressed them: there was not one of them left.

ThomsonWhen they were few in number—of little account and sojourners therein;
BrentonThen they believed his words, and celebrated his praise.

Thomsonwhen they passed through from nation to nation—from one kingdom to another people;
BrentonThey made haste, they forgot his works; they waited not for his counsel.

ThomsonHe suffered no man to injure them—He reproved kings for their sake,
BrentonAnd they lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the dry land.

Thomson“touch not Mine anointed ones, and to My prophets do no harm.”
BrentonAnd he gave them their request, and sent fulness into their souls.

BrentonThe earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and closed upon the congregation of Abiron.

ThomsonThey had humbled his feet with fetters, his life was spent in irons;
BrentonAnd a fire was kindled in their congregation, and a flame burnt up the sinners.
GreekΚαὶ ἐξεκαύθη πῦρ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν, καὶ φλὸξ κατέφλεξεν ἁμαρτωλούς.

Thomsonuntil his word came to pass—till the oracle of the Lord tried him.
BrentonAnd they made a calf in Choreb, and worshipped the graven image,
GreekΚαὶ ἐποίησαν μόσχον ἐν Χωρὴβ, καὶ προσεκύνησαν τῷ γλυπτῷ·

ThomsonThe king had sent and loosed him—the chief of peoples had set him at liberty—
Brentonand they changed their glory into the similitude of a calf that feeds on grass.

Thomsonhad appointed him lord of his house, and ruler of all his possessions;
BrentonThey forgot God that saved them, who had wrought great deeds in Egypt;

Thomsonthat he like himself might instruct princes, and teach his senators wisdom:

Thomsonthen Israel went down to Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Cham.
BrentonSo he said that he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn him away from the fierceness of his anger, so that he should not destroy them.

ThomsonWhen He had increased His people to a great degree, and made them stronger than their enemies;
BrentonMoreover they set at nought the desirable land, and believed not his word.

Thomsonand had turned their hearts to hate His people, to deal deceitfully with His servants;
BrentonAnd they murmured in their tents: they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγόγγυσαν ἐν τοῖς σκηνώμασιν αὐτῶν, οὐκ εἰσήκουσαν τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου.

ThomsonHe sent forth Moses His servant—Aaron whom he had chosen:
BrentonSo he lifted up his hand against them, to cast them down in the wilderness;
GreekΚαὶ ἐπῇρε τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς, τοῦ καταβαλεῖν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ,

Thomsonto them He committed the words of His signs—of His wonders in the land of Cham.
Brentonand to cast down their seed among the nations, and to scatter them in the countries.

ThomsonHe sent forth darkness and it was dark. When they made His words bitter,
BrentonThey were joined also to Beelphegor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked him with their devices;
GreekΚαὶ ἐτελέσθησαν τῷ Βεελφεγὼρ, καὶ ἔφαγον θυσίας νεκρῶν.

ThomsonHe turned their waters into blood, and made a slaughter of their fishes;
Brentonand destruction was multiplied among them.

Thomsontheir land swarmed with frogs, in the inmost chambers of their kings.
BrentonThen Phinees stood up, and made atonement: and the plague ceased.

ThomsonHe spake and the dogfly came, and stinging gnats in all their borders;
BrentonAnd it was counted to him for righteousness, to all generations for ever.

ThomsonHe made His showers, hail, flaming fire in all their land;
BrentonThey provoked him also at the water of Strife, and Moses was hurt for their sakes;
GreekΚαὶ παρώργισαν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ ὕδατος ἀντιλογίας, καὶ ἐκακώθη Μωυσῆς διʼ αὐτούς·

ThomsonHe smote their vines and their fig trees, and broke every tree of their border.
Brentonfor they provoked his spirit, and he spoke unadvisedly with his lips.

ThomsonHe spake, and the grasshopper came, and the brouchus locust in swarms innumerable,
BrentonThey destroyed not the nations which the Lord told them to destroy;
GreekΟὐκ ἐξωλόθρευσαν τὰ ἔθνη ἃ εἶπε Κύριος αὐτοῖς.

Thomsonand devoured every herb in their country, and ate up the fruit of their land.
Brentonbut were mingled with the heathen, and learned their works.
GreekΚαὶ ἐμίγησαν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι, καὶ ἔμαθον τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν.

ThomsonThen He smote every first-born of their land—the first fruits of all their labour;
BrentonAnd they served their graven images; and it became an offence to them.
GreekΚαὶ ἐδούλευσαν τοῖς γλυπτοῖς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτοῖς εἰς σκάνδαλον.

Thomsonand brought out His people with silver and gold, and there was not a feeble person among their tribes.
BrentonAnd they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to devils,
GreekΚαὶ ἔθυσαν τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτῶν τοῖς δαιμονίοις,

ThomsonEgypt rejoiced at their going out, for the dread of these had fallen on them.
Brentonand shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan; and the land was defiled with blood,

ThomsonHe spread out a cloud to shelter them, and a fire to illuminate the night for them.
Brentonand was polluted with their works; and they went a whoring with their own devices.

ThomsonThey asked, and flocks of quails came; and he satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
BrentonSo the Lord was very angry with his people, and he abhorred his inheritance.
GreekΚαὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ Κύριος ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐβδελύξατο τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonHe split a rock and waters gushed out, and rivers ran in dry places.
BrentonAnd he delivered them into the hands of their enemies; and they that hated them ruled over them.
GreekΚαὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας ἐχθρῶν, καὶ ἐκυρίευσαν αὐτῶν οἱ μισοῦντες αὐτούς.

ThomsonBecause he remembered His holy promise—that which he made to Abraham His servant;
BrentonAnd their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought down under their hands.
GreekΚαὶ ἔθλιψαν αὐτοὺς οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐταπεινώθησαν ὑπὸ τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν.

Thomsontherefore he brought out His people with joy—even His chosen ones with gladness;
BrentonMany a time he delivered them; but they provoked him by their counsel, and they were brought low by their iniquities.

Thomsonand gave them the countries of nations, and they inherited the labours of peoples;
BrentonYet the Lord looked upon their affliction, when he heard their petition.

Thomsonthat they might keep His rules of rectitude, and that they might diligently seek His law.
BrentonAnd he remembered his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercy.
