1
ThomsonHEARKEN, O Lord, to my justification; attend to my supplication: give ear to my prayer which is not made with feigned lips.
BrentonFor the end, a Psalm of David the servant of the Lord; the words which he spoke to the Lord, even the words of this Song, in the day in which the Lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: and he said:
2
ThomsonLet my sentence come forth from Thy presence: Let mine eyes behold righteous decisions.
BrentonI will love thee, O Lord, my strength.
3
ThomsonThou hast proved my heart: Thou hast watched me by night: Thou hast tried me: and in me there was found no injustice.
BrentonThe Lord is my firm support, and my refuge, and my deliverer; my God is my helper, I will hope in him; he is my defender, and the horn of my salvation, and my helper.
4
ThomsonThat my mouth might not speak the works of these men; I, because of the words of Thy lips, kept rugged ways.
BrentonI will call upon the Lord with praises, and I shall be saved from mine enemies.
5
ThomsonEstablish my footsteps in Thy paths; that my footsteps may not be moved.
BrentonThe pangs of death compassed me, and the torrents of ungodliness troubled me exceedingly.
6
ThomsonI have cried, because Thou, O God, didst hear me: incline Thine ear to me and hear my words.
BrentonThe pangs of hell came round about me: the snares of death prevented me.
7
ThomsonDisplay marvellously Thy mercies, O Thou, who, with Thy right hand, savest from adversaries them who trust in Thee.
BrentonAnd when I was afflicted I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God: he heard my voice out of his holy temple, and my cry shall enter before him, even into his ears.
8
ThomsonKeep me as the apple of an eye: with the cover of Thy wings Thou wilt shelter me
BrentonThen the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains were disturbed, and were shaken, because God was angry with them.
9
Thomsonfrom the face of the wicked who afflict me.
BrentonThere went up a smoke in his wrath, and fire burst into a flame at his presence: coals were kindled at it.
10
ThomsonThese enemies of mine beset my soul: they shut up their fat; their mouth spoke proudly.
BrentonAnd he bowed the heaven, and came down: and thick darkness was under his feet.
11
ThomsonHaving driven me out they now enclosed me. They set their eyes inclining to the ground.
BrentonAnd he mounted on cherubs and flew: he flew on the wings of winds.
12
ThomsonThey observed me, like a lion eager for prey, and like a young lion lurking in coverts.
BrentonAnd he made darkness his secret place: round about him was his tabernacle, even dark water in the clouds of the air.
13
ThomsonArise, O Lord, prevent them and cause them to stumble. Deliver my soul from the wicked:
BrentonAt the brightness before him the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire.
14
Thomsonwrest Thy sword from Thine enemies’ hand. Dismiss them, O Lord, from the land: disperse them in their lifetime. Though their belly was filled with Thy stores, they glutted themselves with swine’s flesh, and left the remains for their children.
BrentonThe Lord also thundered from heaven, and the Highest uttered his voice.
15
ThomsonBut as for me, let me appear righteous before Thee; let me be satisfied with a display of Thy glory.
BrentonAnd he sent forth his weapons, and scattered them; and multiplied lightnings, and routed them.
