1
ThomsonHOW good is God to Israel! To such as are upright in heart!
BrentonA Psalm of instruction for Asaph. Wherefore hast thou rejected us, O God, for ever? wherefore is thy wrath kindled against the sheep of thy pasture?
GreekΣυνέσεως τῷ Ἀσάφ. Ἱνατί ἀπόσω ὁ Θεὸς εἰς τέλος; ὠργίσθη ὁ θυμός σου ἐπὶ πρόβατα νομῆς σου;
2
ThomsonBut as for me, my feet were almost gone: my steps had well nigh slipped;
BrentonRemember thy congregation which thou hast purchased from the beginning; thou didst ransom the rod of thine inheritance; this mount Sion wherein thou hast dwelt.
3
Thomsonfor I envied the unrighteous; when I saw the prosperity of sinners.
BrentonLift up thine hands against their pride continually; because of all that the enemy has done wickedly in thy holy places.
4
ThomsonFor there is no lifting up of eyes in their death: and in their affliction they have support.
BrentonAnd they that hate thee have boasted in the midst of thy feast; they have set up their standards for signs,
5
ThomsonThey are not in trouble like other men; nor with other men to be scourged.
Brentonignorantly as it were in the entrance above;
6
ThomsonTherefore haughtiness hath got a mastery over them—they have clothed themselves with their iniquity and impiety.
Brentonthey cut down its doors at once with axes as in a wood of trees; they have broken it down with hatchet and stone cutter.
7
ThomsonTheir iniquity springeth up as it were out of fatness; they passed on to the purpose of their heart.
BrentonThey have burnt thy sanctuary with fire to the ground; they have profaned the habitation of thy name.
8
ThomsonThey thought and spoke wickedly—they spoke injustice with a lofty air.
BrentonThey have said in their heart, even all their kindred together, Come, let us abolish the feasts of the Lord from the earth.
9
ThomsonThey set their mouth against heaven; and their tongue passed on over the earth.
BrentonWe have not seen our signs; there is no longer a prophet; and God will not know us any more.
10
ThomsonShall my people therefore turn to this; and will full days be found by them?
BrentonHow long, O God, shall the enemy reproach? shall the enemy provoke thy name for ever?
GreekἝως πότε ὁ Θεὸς, ὀνειδιεῖ ὁ ἐχθρὸς, παροξυνεῖ ὁ ὑπεναντίος τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς τέλος;
11
ThomsonThey indeed said, How doth God know? and, Is there any knowledge in the Most High?
BrentonWherefore turnest thou away thine hand, and thy right hand from the midst of thy bosom for ever?
GreekἹνατί ἀποστρέφεις τὴν χεῖρά σου, καὶ τὴν δεξιάν σου ἐκ μέσου τοῦ κόλπου σου εἰς τέλος;
12
ThomsonBehold these who are sinful men; are always prosperous and have gotten wealth.
BrentonBut God is our King of old; he has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.
13
ThomsonNay, I myself said, Have I then in vain kept my heart just and washed my hands in innocence?
BrentonThou didst establish the sea, in thy might, thou didst break to pieces the heads of the dragons in the water.
14
ThomsonAll the day long I have been scourged; and the accusation against me is renewed every morning.
BrentonThou didst break to pieces the heads of the dragon; thou didst give him for meat to the Ethiopian nations.
15
ThomsonHad I said, I will make such a declaration openly: I should have been treacherous to the generation of thy children.
BrentonThou didst cleave fountains and torrents; thou driedst up mighty rivers.
16
ThomsonI therefore supposed, the trouble of knowing this is before me.
BrentonThe day is thine, and the night is thine; thou hast prepared the sun and the moon.
17
ThomsonWhen I go to the sanctuary of God; I may understand the final issue.
BrentonThou hast made all the borders of the earth; thou hast made summer and spring.
18
ThomsonIt is but for their frauds Thou hast dealt thus with them. Thou hast overthrown them by their exaltation.
BrentonRemember this thy creation: an enemy has reproached the Lord, and a foolish people has provoked thy name.
19
ThomsonO! how they were for destruction! They are gone in a moment! They perished for their iniquity!
BrentonDeliver not to the wild beasts a soul that gives praise to thee: forget not for ever the souls of thy poor.
20
ThomsonAs a dream of one awakened out of sleep. Thou, O Lord, in Thy city wilt spurn their ghost;
BrentonLook upon thy covenant: for the dark places of the earth are filled with the habitations of iniquity.
21
Thomsontherefore my heart was cheered and my reins were changed.
BrentonLet not the afflicted and shamed one be rejected: the poor and needy shall praise thy name.
22
ThomsonI indeed was despicable for my want of knowledge; I was brutish as a beast before Thee.
BrentonArise, O God, plead thy cause: remember thy reproaches that come from the foolish one all the day.
23
ThomsonAs for me I shall be with Thee continually: Thou hast held me by my right hand:
BrentonForget not the voice of thy suppliants: let the pride of them that hate thee continually ascend before thee.
