GreekΕἰς τὸ τέλος, ὑπὲρ Ἰδιθοὺν ψαλμὸς τῷ Ἀσάφ.

ThomsonHis place was in Eirene; and His dwelling is on Sion.

BrentonI cried to the Lord with my voice, yea, my voice was addressed to God; and he gave heed to me.

GreekΦωνῇ μου πρὸς Κύριον ἐκέκραξα, καὶ ἡ φωνή μου πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ προσέσχε μοι.

ThomsonThere He broke the strong bows, armour, and sword and battle.

BrentonIn the day of mine affliction I earnestly sought the Lord; even with my hands by night before him, and I was not deceived; my soul refused to be comforted.

GreekἘν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεώς μου τὸν Θεὸν ἐξεζήτησα, ταῖς χερσί μου νυκτὸς ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἠπατήθην· ἀπηνῄνατο παρακληθῆναι ἡ ψυχή μου·

ThomsonFrom everlasting mountains, Thou shinest marvellously;

BrentonI remembered God, and rejoiced; I poured out my complaint, and my soul fainted. Pause.

GreekἘμνήσθην τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ εὐφράνθην, ἠδολέσχησα, καὶ ὠλιγοψύχησε τὸ πνεῦμά μου· διάψαλμα.

Thomsonall the foolish-hearted, were struck with consternation. All those mighty men have slept their sleep, and found nothing of their wealth for their hands.

BrentonAll mine enemies set a watch against me: I was troubled, and spoke not.

GreekΠροκατελάβοντο φυλακὰς πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί μου, ἐταράχθην καὶ οὐκ ἐλάλησα.

ThomsonAt Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, they who had mounted their horses fell fast asleep.

BrentonI considered the days of old, and remembered ancient years.

GreekΔιελογισάμην ἡμέρας ἀρχαίας, καὶ ἔτη αἰώνια

ThomsonThou art terrible; who therefore can withstand Thee, on the account of Thine indignation.

BrentonAnd I meditated; I communed with my heart by night, and diligently searched my spirit, saying,

Greekἐμνήσθην, καὶ ἐμελέτησα· νυκτὸς μετὰ τῆς καρδίας μου ἠδολέσχουν, καὶ ἔσκαλλον τὸ πνεῦμά μου.

ThomsonFrom heaven Thou didst cause the sentence to be heard; the earth was terrified and was still:

BrentonWill the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be well pleased no more?

GreekΜὴ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ἀπώσεται Κύριος, καὶ οὐ προσθήσει τοῦ εὐδοκῆσαι ἔτι;

Thomsonwhen God arose for judgment, to save all the meek in heart.

BrentonWill he cut off his mercy for ever, even for ever and ever?

GreekἪ εἰς τέλος ἀποκόψει τὸ ἔλεος ἀπὸ γενεᾶς καὶ γενεᾶς;

ThomsonSince the secret purpose of man can contribute to Thy praise, let the remainder of it cause a festival to be celebrated for Thee.

BrentonWill God forget to pity? or will he shut up his compassions in his wrath? Pause.

GreekἪ ἐπιλήσεται τοῦ οἰκτειρῆσαι ὁ Θεὸς, ἢ συνέξει ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ αὐτοῦ τοὺς οἰκτιρμοὺς αὐτοῦ; διάψαλμα.

ThomsonVow and pay your vows to the Lord our God: let all around Him bring gifts to Him who is awful—

BrentonAnd I said, Now I have begun; this is the change of the right hand of the Most High.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπα, νῦν ἠρξάμην, αὕτη ἡ ἀλλοίωσις τῆς δεξιᾶς τοῦ ὑψίστου.

Thomsonto Him who taketh away the spirits of chiefs—to Him who is terrible to the kings of the earth.

BrentonI remembered the works of the Lord; for I will remember thy wonders from the beginning.

GreekἘμνήσθην τῶν ἔργων Κυρίου, ὅτι μνησθήσομαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν θαυμασίων σου,

Thomson—

BrentonAnd I will meditate on all thy works, and will consider thy doings.

Greekκαὶ μελετήσω ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασί σου ἀδολεσχήσω.

Thomson—

BrentonO God, thy way is in the sanctuary; who is a great God as our God?

GreekὉ Θεὸς ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ἡ ὁδός σου, τίς θεὸς μέγας ὡς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν;

Thomson—

BrentonThou art the God that doest wonders; thou hast made known thy power among the nations.

GreekΣὺ εἶ ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ποιῶν θαυμάσια, ἐγνώρισας ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς τὴν δύναμίν σου·

Thomson—

BrentonThou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Pause.

Greekἐλυτρώσω ἐν τῷ βραχίονί σου τὸν λαόν σου, τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰακὼβ καὶ Ἰωσήφ· διάψαλμα.

Thomson—

BrentonThe waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee, and feared; and the depths were troubled.

GreekΕἴδοσάν σε ὕδατα ὁ Θεὸς, εἴδοσάν σε ὕδατα καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν, καὶ ἐταράχθησαν ἄβυσσοι.

Thomson—

BrentonThere was an abundant sound of waters: the clouds uttered a voice; for thine arrows went abroad.

GreekΠλῆθος ἤχους ὑδάτων, φωνὴν ἔδωκαν αἱ νεφέλαι· καὶ γὰρ τὰ βέλη σου διαπορεύονται.

Thomson—

BrentonThe voice of thy thunder was abroad, and around thy lightnings appeared to the world; the earth trembled and quaked.

GreekΦωνὴ τῆς βροντῆς σου ἐν τῷ τροχῷ· ἔφαναν αἱ ἀστραπαί σου τῇ οἰκουμένῃ, ἐσαλεύθη καὶ ἔντρομος ἐγενήθη ἡ γῆ.

Thomson—

BrentonThy way is in the sea, and thy paths in many waters, and thy footsteps cannot be known.

GreekἘν τῇ θαλάσσῃ ἡ ὁδός σου, καὶ αἱ τρίβοι σου ἐν ὕδασι πολλοῖς, καὶ τὰ ἴχνη σου οὐ γνωσθήσονται.

Thomson—

BrentonThou didst guide thy people as sheep by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

GreekὩδήγησας ὡς πρόβατα τὸν λαόν σου ἐν χειρὶ Μωυσῆ καὶ Ἀαρών.
