1
ThomsonATTEND, my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
BrentonA Psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; they have polluted thy holy temple; they have made Jerusalem a storehouse of fruits.
2
ThomsonI will open my mouth with parables—I will utter dark sayings of old;—
BrentonThey have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of thy holy ones for the wild beasts of the earth.
3
Thomsonsuch as we have heard and known, which our fathers have related to us.
BrentonThey have shed their blood as water, round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.
4
ThomsonThey were not hid from their children: one generation told another the praises of the Lord, His acts of power, and the wonders which He hath done.
BrentonWe are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5
ThomsonThus He raised up a testimony in Jacob, and established a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to make known to their children:
BrentonHow long, O Lord? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
GreekἝως πότε, Κύριε, ὀργισθήσῃ εἰς τέλος; ἐκκαυθήσεται ὡς πῦρ ὁ ζῆλός σου;
6
Thomsonthat the succeeding generation—the children to be born, might know it, and rise and tell the same to their children:
BrentonPour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms which have not called upon thy name.
7
Thomsonthat they might put their trust in God, and not forget the works of God, but seek diligently His commandments—
BrentonFor they have devoured Jacob, and laid his place waste.
8
Thomsonthat they might not be like their fathers—a perverse and rebellious generation—a generation which set not their hearts aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
BrentonRemember not our old transgressions; let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us; for we are greatly impoverished.
9
ThomsonThe sons of Ephraim, who bend and shoot the bow, were turned back in the day of battle.
BrentonHelp us, O God our Saviour; for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us; and be merciful to our sins, for thy name's sake.
10
ThomsonThey did not keep the covenant of God, and would not walk in His law.
BrentonLest haply they should say among the heathen, Where is their God? and let the avenging of thy servants' blood that has been shed be known among the heathen before our eyes.
11
ThomsonThey indeed forget His acts of kindness—those wonders of His which He had shewn them—
BrentonLet the groaning of the prisoners come in before thee; according to the greatness of thine arm preserve the sons of the slain ones.
12
Thomsonwonders which He did in the sight of their fathers: in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Tanis.
BrentonRepay to our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, with which they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13
ThomsonHe had cleft the sea and led them through it; He had stayed the waters as in a bottle.
BrentonFor we are thy people and the sheep of thy pasture; we will give thee thanks for ever; we will declare thy praise throughout all generations.
