ThomsonLet my prayer come before Thee, incline, O Lord, Thine ear to my supplication;
BrentonI will sing of thy mercies, O Lord, for ever: I will declare thy truth with my mouth to all generations.
GreekΤὰ ἐλέη σου Κύριε εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ᾄσομαι, εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεὰν ἀπαγγελῶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου ἐν τῷ στόματί μου.

Thomsonfor my soul is full of trouble, and my life draweth near to the mansion of the dead.
BrentonFor thou hast said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy truth shall be established in the heavens.
GreekὍτι εἶπας, εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔλεος οἰκοδομηθήσεται, ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἑτοιμασθήσεται ἡ ἀλήθειά σου·

ThomsonI was counted with them who are going down to the pit; I became like a man who is past recovery—
BrentonI made a covenant with my chosen ones, I sware unto David my servant.

Thomsonlike one set free among the dead—like the prostrate slain, asleep in the grave, whom Thou hast no more remembered.
BrentonI will establish thy seed for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Pause.
GreekἝως τοῦ αἰῶνος ἑτοιμάσω τὸ σπέρμα σου, καὶ οἰκοδομήσω εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεὰν τὸν θρόνον σου· διάψαλμα.

ThomsonThough they were cast off out of Thy hand, they laid me in the lowest pit—in dark places and in the shade of death.
BrentonThe heavens shall declare thy wonders, O Lord; and thy truth in the assembly of the saints.
GreekἘξομολογήσονται οἱ οὐρανοὶ τὰ θαυμάσιά σου Κύριε, καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ἁγίων.

ThomsonOn me Thy wrath was pressed hard, and all Thy billows Thou didst bring upon me.
BrentonFor who in the heavens shall be compared to the Lord? and who shall be likened to the Lord among the sons of God?
GreekὍτι τίς ἐν νεφέλαις ἰσωθήσεται τῷ Κυρίῳ; καὶ τίς ὁμοιωθήσεται τῷ Κυρίῳ ἐν υἱοῖς Θεοῦ;

ThomsonThou hast removed far from me my acquaintance, they accounted me an abomination to them. I was delivered up and did not go abroad;
BrentonGod is glorified in the council of the saints; great and terrible toward all that are round about him.
GreekὉ Θεὸς ἐνδοξαζόμενος ἐν βουλῇ ἁγίων, μέγας καὶ φοβερὸς ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς περικύκλῳ αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonmine eyes were weakened by affliction. To Thee, O Lord, I cried all the day long: to Thee I stretched forth my hands.
BrentonO Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee.
GreekΚύριε ὁ Θεὸς τῶν δυνάμεων, τίς ὅμοιός σοι; δυνατὸς εἶ Κύριε, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθειά σου κύκλῳ σου.

ThomsonWilt Thou work wonders among the dead? Or can physicians raise them up to praise Thee?
BrentonThou rulest the power of the sea; and thou calmest the tumult of its waves.
GreekΣὺ δεσπόζεις τοῦ κράτους τῆς θαλάσσης, τὸν δὲ σάλον τῶν κυμάτων αὐτῆς σὺ καταπραΰνεις.

ThomsonCan any in the grave declare Thy kindness?—Or Thy faithfulness, in destruction?
BrentonThou hast brought down the proud as one that is slain; and with the arm of thy power thou hast scattered thine enemies.
GreekΣὺ ἐταπείνωσας ὡς τραυματίαν ὑπερήφανον, καὶ ἐν τῷ βραχίονι τῆς δυνάμεώς σου διεσκόρπισας τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου.

ThomsonCan Thy wonders be known in darkness—Or Thy saving mercy, in the land of forgetfulness?
BrentonThe heavens are thine, and the earth is thine: thou hast founded the world, and the fulness of it.
GreekΣοί εἰσιν οἱ οὐρανοὶ, καὶ σή ἐστιν ἡ γῆ, τὴν οἰκουμένην καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς σὺ ἐθεμελίωσας.

ThomsonAs for me, I have cried to Thee, O Lord, and in the morning my prayers shall be before Thee.
BrentonThou hast created the north and the west: Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.
GreekΤὸν Βοῤῥᾶν καὶ θάλασσας σὺ ἔκτισας, Θαβὼρ καὶ Ἑρμὼν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἀγαλλιάσονται.

ThomsonO Lord, why rejectest Thou my prayer—why turnest Thou away Thy face from me?
BrentonThine is the mighty arm: let thy hand be strengthened, let thy right hand be exalted.
GreekΣὸς ὁ βραχίων μετὰ δυναστείας· κραταιωθήτω ἡ χείρ σου, ὑψωθήτω ἡ δεξιά σου.

ThomsonI am afflicted and in troubles from my youth: though raised high I have been humbled and distressed.
BrentonJustice and judgment are the establishment of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
GreekΔικαιοσύνη καὶ κρίμα ἑτοιμασία τοῦ θρόνου σου· ἔλεος καὶ ἀλήθεια προπορεύσονται πρὸ προσώπου σου.

ThomsonThy resentments have come upon me; and Thy terrors have quite confounded me:
BrentonBlessed is the people that knows the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.
GreekΜακάριος ὁ λαὸς ὁ γινώσκων ἀλαλαγμόν· Κύριε ἐν τῷ φωτὶ τοῦ προσώπου σου πορεύσονται,

Thomsonthey have encompassed me like water: all the day long they begirt me at once.
BrentonAnd in thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.
Greekκαὶ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἀγαλλιάσονται ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν, καὶ ἐν τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ σου ὑψωθήσονται.

ThomsonThou hast removed a friend far from me, my acquaintance also, because of misery.
BrentonFor thou art the boast of their strength; and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted,
GreekὍτι τὸ καύχημα τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτῶν σὺ εἶ, καὶ ἐν τῇ εὐδοκίᾳ σου ὑψωθήσεται τὸ κέρας ἡμῶν·

Brentonfor our help is of the Lord; and of the Holy One of Israel, our king.
Greekὅτι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡ ἀντίληψις, καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Ἰσραὴλ βασιλέως ἡμῶν.

BrentonThen thou spokest in vision to thy children, and saidst, I have laid help on a mighty one; I have exalted one chosen out of my people.
GreekΤότε ἐλάλησας ἐν ὁράσει τοῖς υἱοῖς σου, καὶ εἶπας, ἐθέμην βοήθειαν ἐπὶ δυνατὸν, ὕψωσα ἐκλεκτὸν ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ μου.

BrentonI have found David my servant; I have anointed him by my holy mercy.

BrentonFor my hand shall support him; and mine arm shall strengthen him.
GreekἩ γὰρ χείρ μου συναντιλήψεται αὐτῷ, καὶ ὁ βραχίων μου κατισχύσει αὐτόν.

BrentonThe enemy shall have no advantage against him; and the son of transgression shall not hurt him again.
GreekΟὐκ ὠφελήσει ἐχθρὸς ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ υἱὸς ἀνομίας οὐ προσθήσει τοῦ κακῶσαι αὐτόν.

BrentonAnd I will hew down his foes before him, and put to flight those that hate him.
GreekΚαὶ συγκόψω ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοὺς μισοῦντας αὐτὸν τροπώσομαι.

BrentonBut my truth and my mercy shall be with him; and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

BrentonAnd I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

BrentonHe shall call upon me, saying, Thou art my Father, my God, and the helper of my salvation.

BrentonAnd I will make him my first-born, higher than the kings of the earth.

BrentonI will keep my mercy for him for ever, and my covenant shall be firm with him.

BrentonAnd I will establish his seed for ever and ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

BrentonIf his children should forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

Brentonif they should profane my ordinances, and not keep my commandments;
Greekἐὰν τὰ δικαιώματά μου βεβηλώσωσι, καὶ τὰς ἐντολάς μου μὴ φυλάξωσιν·

BrentonI will visit their transgressions with a rod, and their sins with scourges.
GreekἘπισκέψομαι ἐν ῥάβδῳ τὰς ἀνομίας αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐν μάστιξι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν.

BrentonBut my mercy I will not utterly remove from him, nor wrong my truth.

BrentonNeither will I by any means profane my covenant; and I will not make void the things that proceed out of my lips.
