1AGAIN the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sina, in the tabernacle of the testimony, on the first day of the second month, in the second year of their coming out of the land of Egypt, and said,

2Take ye the sum of the whole congregation of Israel, according to pedigrees, and according to the houses of their patriarchal families, and according to the number of their names, according to their poll,

3every male from twenty years old and upwards, every one who goeth out in the army of Israel; review them with their army.

4Thou and Aaron shall review them, and with you there shall be of the chiefs, one from each tribe.

5They shall be the chiefs of the patriarchal houses; and these are the names of the men who shall attend you.

6Of the Reubenites, Elisur, son of Sedur;

7of the children of Juda, Naasson, son of Aminadab;

8of the children of Issachar, Nathaniel, son of Sogar;

9of the Zabulonites, Eliab, son of Chailon;

10of the children of Joseph—of the Ephraimites, Elisama, son of Emiud; of the Manassites, Gamaliel, son of Phadassur;

11of the Benjaminites, Abidon, son of Gadeoni;

12of the Danites, Achiezer, son of Amisadai;

13of the Aserites, Phagiel, son of Echran;

14of the Gadites, Elisaph, son of Raguel;

15of the Nephthaleimites, Achire, son of Ainan.

16These are renowned men of the congregation, chiefs of the tribes according to their patriarchal families, the chiliarchs of Israel.

17So Moses and Aaron took these men, who were expressly named,

18and assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and marshalled them according to their pedigrees, according to their families, according to the number of their names, from twenty years old and upwards, every male by their poll,

19as the Lord commanded Moses, and reviewed them in the wilderness of Sina.

20And there were of the children of Reuben, Jacob’s first born, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of names by their poll—all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army, on the review of those of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.

22And of the Symeonites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

23on the review of them, of the tribe of Symeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

26And of the children of Juda, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll; all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

27on the review of those of the tribe of Judas, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

28And of the Issacharites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

29on a review of those of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

30And of the Zabulonites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards,

31every one who went out in the army, on a review of those of the tribe of Zabulon, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

32And of the children of Joseph—Of the Ephraimites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

33on a review of those of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.

34And of the Manassites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families,

35according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army, on a review of those of the tribe of Manasses, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

36And of the Benjaminites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army, on a review of those of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

24And of the Gadites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

25on a review of those of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

38And of the Danites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards,

39every one who went out in the army, on a review of those of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

40And of the Aserites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

41on a review of those of the tribe of Aser, were forty-one thousand five hundred.

42And of the Nephthaleimites, according to their pedigrees, according to their communities, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names by their poll, all the males from twenty years old and upwards, every one who went out in the army,

43on a review of those of the tribe of Nephthaleim, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

44This was the review which Moses and Aaron, and the chiefs of Israel made. The chiefs were twelve, a man for every tribe. They were of the patriarchal houses of their respective tribes.

45And the whole review of the Israelites, comprehending their army from twenty years old and upwards,

46every one who went out to be marshalled in Israel, was six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.

47But the Levites of the tribe of their father’s house, were not reviewed among the Israelites:

48for the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying,

49See that thou review not the tribe of Levi, nor take an account of them among the children of Israel.

50But thou shalt set the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the utensils thereof, and over all the things which are in it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its utensils, and they shall minister therein, and encamp about the tabernacle.

51And when the tabernacle is to remove, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, they shall set it up. And if any of another family come near, let him be put to death.

52And when the Israelites encamp, every man in his station, and every man according to his command, with their army,

53let the Levites encamp before them, around the tabernacle of the testimony, that there may be no lapse committed by the children of Israel; and that the Levites themselves may guard the tabernacle of the testimony.

54And when the Israelites had done according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.
