ThomsonWHEN David had consulted with the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, under every leader,

GreekΚαὶ ἐβουλεύσατο Δαυὶδ μετὰ τῶν χιλιάρχων καὶ τῶν ἑκατοντάρχων, παντὶ ἡγουμένῳ.

Thomsonhe said to the whole congregation of Israel, If it seemeth good and be countenanced by the Lord our God, let us send to the rest of our brethren who are left in all the land of Israel, and with them let the priests, the Levites in the cities of their possession be assembled with us;
BrentonAnd David said to the whole congregation of Israel, If it seem good to you, and it should be prospered by the Lord our God, let us send to our brethren that are left in all the land of Israel, and let the priests the Levites who are with them in the cities of their possession come, and let them be gathered to us.

Thomsonand let us bring the ark of our God to us. For they had not sought it from the days of Saul.
BrentonAnd let us bring over to us the ark of our God; for men have not enquired at it since the days of Saul.
Greekκαὶ μετενέγκωμεν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν πρὸς ἡμᾶς, ὅτι οὐκ ἐζήτησαν αὐτὴν ἀφʼ ἡμερῶν Σαούλ.

ThomsonThereupon the whole congregation gave orders to do so; for the proposal was right in the eyes of all the people.
BrentonAnd all the congregation said that they would do thus; for the saying was right in the eyes of all the people.

ThomsonAccordingly, David assembled all Israel from the border of Egypt to the bay of Emath, to bring the ark of God from the city Iarim,

Thomsonand David brought it up. Now when all Israel came to the city Iarim which belonged to Juda, to bring up thence the ark of God the Lord, enthroned on cherubim whose name was invoked,

Thomsonthey put the ark of God on a new cart. And from the house of Aminadab, Oza and his brothers guided the cart,
BrentonAnd they set the ark of God on a new waggon brought out of the house of Aminadab: and Oza and his brethren drove the waggon.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπέθηκαν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐφʼ ἅμαξαν καινὴν ἐξ οἴκου Ἀμιναδάβ· καὶ Ὀζὰ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἦγον τὴν ἅμαξαν.

Thomsonwhile David and all Israel were playing with all their might before God, on psalteries and harps and lutes and tympani and cymbals and trumpets.
BrentonAnd David and all Israel were playing before the Lord with all their might, and that together with singers, and with harps, and with lutes, with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.
GreekΚαὶ Δαυὶδ καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ παίζοντες ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει, καὶ ἐν ψαλτῳδοῖς, καὶ ἐν κινύραις, καὶ ἐν νάβλαις, ἐν τυμπάνοις, καὶ ἐν κυμβάλοις, καὶ ἐν σάλπιγξι.

ThomsonBut when they came to the threshing floor, Oza stretched forth his hand to take hold of the ark, because the bullock caused it to lean:
BrentonAnd they came as far as the threshing-floor: and Oza put forth his hand to hold the ark, because the bullock moved it from its place.
GreekΚαὶ ἤλθοσαν ἕως τῆς ἅλωνος· καὶ ἐξέτεινεν Ὀζὰ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ τοῦ κατασχεῖν τὴν κιβωτὸν, ὅτι ἐξέκλινεν αὐτὴν ὁ μόσχος.

Thomsonwhereupon the anger of the Lord was kindled against Oza, and He smote him there, because he stretched forth his hand upon the ark, and he died there before God.
BrentonAnd the Lord was very angry with Oza, and smote him there, because of his stretching forth his hand upon the ark: and he died there before God.
GreekΚαὶ ἐθυμώθη Κύριος ὀργῇ ἐπὶ Ὀζά, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ διὰ τὸ ἐκτεῖναι τὴν χεῖρα αὑτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν κιβωτὸν, καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐκεῖ ἀπέναντι τοῦ Θεοῦ·

ThomsonAnd David was disheartened because the Lord had made a breach on Oza, and called that place, Breach of Oza, which is still its name.
BrentonAnd David was dispirited, because the Lord had made a breach on Oza: and he called that place the Breach of Oza until this day.
GreekΚαὶ ἠθύμησε Δαυὶδ, ὅτι διέκοψε Κύριος διακοπὴν ἐν Ὀζὰ, καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸν τόπον ἐκεῖνον, Διακοπὴ Ὀζὰ, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.

ThomsonAnd David was that day afraid of God and said, How can I bring the ark of God home to me?
BrentonAnd David feared God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God in to myself?
GreekΚαὶ ἐφοβήθη Δαυὶδ τὸν Θεὸν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, λέγων, πῶς εἰσοίσω τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ πρὸς ἐμαυτόν;

ThomsonSo David did not bring the ark of God home to himself, to the city of David, but caused it to turn aside to the house of Abeddara, the Gethite.
BrentonSo David brought not the ark home to himself into the city of David, but he turned it aside into the house of Abeddara the Gethite.
