ThomsonWHEN they told Joab the news, saying, Behold the king is weeping, and mourning for Abessalom,

BrentonAnd the king was troubled, and went to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and thus he said as he went, My son Abessalom, my son, my son Abessalom; would God I had died for thee, even I had died for thee, Abessalom, my son, my son!

Thomsonso that the joy of the day is turned into sorrow to all the people (For the people that day heard it said, that the king was in grief for his son,

Thomsontherefore the people were stealing into the city that day, as people do who are ashamed, when they flee in battle,

BrentonAnd the victory was turned that day into mourning to all the people, for the people heard say that day, The king grieves after his son.

Thomsonand the king hid his face), therefore when the king cried with a loud voice saying, Oh! my son Abessalom! Oh! Abessalom my son!

BrentonAnd the people stole away that day to go into the city, as people steal away when they are ashamed as they flee in the battle.

Thomsonby thy loving those who hate thee, and hating those who love thee. Thou hast indeed this day declared, that thou regardest neither thy officers, nor thy servants; for I am now convinced, that if Abessalom were alive, and we were now all dead, then all would be right in thine eyes.

BrentonAnd Joab went in to the king, into the house, and said, Thou hast this day shamed the faces of all thy servants that have delivered thee this day, and have saved the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and of thy concubines,

ThomsonNow therefore arise, and go out, and speak affectionately to thy servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that if thou go not out immediately, there will not a man lodge with thee this night. And be assured that this will be worse for thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee, from thy youth even till now.

Brentonforasmuch as thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee; and thou hast this day declared, that thy princes and thy servants are nothing in thy sight: for I know this day, that if Abessalom were alive, and all of us dead to-day, then it would have been right in thy sight.

ThomsonThen the king arose, and sat in the gate. And when all the people proclaimed the news, saying, Behold the king is sitting in the gate, then all the people entered the gate, in the presence of the king.

BrentonAnd now arise, and go forth, and speak comfortably to thy servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that unless thou wilt go forth to-day, there shall not a man remain with thee this night: and know for thyself, this thing will indeed be evil to thee beyond all the evil that has come upon thee from thy youth until now.

ThomsonNow when all Israel had fled, every man to his tent, all the people throughout all the tribes of Israel began to condemn themselves, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies. Though he delivered us out of the hands of the Philistines, yet he hath now fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom.

BrentonThen the king arose, and sat in the gate: and all the people reported, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people went in before the king to the gate; for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

BrentonAnd all the people disputed among all the tribes of Israel, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies, and he rescued us from the hand of the Philistines: and now he has fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom.

The speech indeed of all Israel is come to the king, that he should return to his house.

BrentonAnd Abessalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle: and now why are ye silent about bringing back the king? And the word of all Israel came to the king.

BrentonAnd king David sent to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Israel, saying, Why are ye the last to bring back the king to his house? whereas the word of all Israel is come to the king to his house.

ThomsonSo when he had turned the heart of Juda, like that of one man, they sent to the king, saying, Return thou and all thy servants.

BrentonAnd ye shall say to Amessai, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? and now God do so to me, and more also, if thou shalt not be commander of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

ThomsonSo the king set out on his return, and came to the Jordan. And the men of Juda came to Galgala, to go and meet the king, and conduct him over the Jordan.

BrentonAnd he bowed the heart of all the men of Juda as that of one man; and they sent to the king, saying, Return thou, and all thy servants.

ThomsonAnd Semei, son of Gera, the Jeminite, of Baurim, hastened and came down with the men of Juda, to meet king David;

BrentonAnd the king returned, and came as far as Jordan. And the men of Juda came to Galgala on their way to meet the king, to cause the king to pass over Jordan.

GreekΚαὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ὁ βασιλεὺς, καὶ ἦλθεν ἕως τοῦ Ἰορδάνου· καὶ ἄνδρες Ἰούδα ἦλθαν εἰς Γάλγαλα τοῦ πορεύεσθαι εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ βασιλέως, διαβιβάσαι τὸν βασιλέα τὸν Ἰορδάνην.

Thomsonand with him were a thousand men from Benjamin, and Siba, the servant of the house of Saul, with his fifteen sons, and his twenty servants, and they acted as guides across the Jordan, before the king, and performed the service of bringing the king over.

BrentonAnd Semei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Baurim, hasted and went down with the men of Juda to meet king David.

Thomsonand said to the king, Let not my lord, I pray thee, impute to me my transgression; nor call to remembrance what thy servant did perversely, on the day when my lord went out of Jerusalem, that the king should lay it to heart.

Brentonand they performed the service of bringing the king over; and there went over a ferry-boat to remove the household of the king, and to do that which was right in his eyes. And Semei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went over Jordan;

ThomsonBecause thy servant was conscious that he had sinned, therefore behold I am come, the first of all Israel, and of the house of Joseph, in coming down to meet my lord the king.

Brentonand said to the king, Let not my lord now impute iniquity, and remember not all the iniquity of thy servant in the day in which my lord went out from Jerusalem, so that the king should mind it.

ThomsonTo this Abessa, son of Saruia, answered and said, Shall not Semei be put to death, because he cursed the anointed of the Lord?

BrentonFor thy servant knows that I have sinned: and, behold, I am come to-day before all Israel and the house of Joseph, to go down and meet my lord the king.

GreekὍτι ἔγνω ὁ δοῦλός σου ὅτι ἐγὼ ἥμαρτον, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἦλθον σήμερον πρότερος παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ οἴκου Ἰωσὴφ, τοῦ καταβῆναί με εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως.

ThomsonBut David said, What have you to do with me, ye sons of Saruia, that you are now laying snares for me? There shall not a man of Israel be this day put to death. For I do not yet know whether I am king over Israel.

BrentonAnd Abessai the son of Saruia answered and said, Shall not Semei therefore be put to death, because he cursed the Lord's anointed?

ThomsonThen the king said to Semei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore to him.

BrentonAnd David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Saruia, that ye as it were lie in wait against me this day? to-day no man in Israel shall be put to death, for I know not if I this day reign over Israel.

ThomsonMemphibosthe also, the grandson of Saul, came down to meet the king. Now he had not dressed his feet, nor pared his nails, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king went away, to the day he returned, in peace.

BrentonAnd the king said to Semei, Thou shalt not die: and the king swore to him.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σεμεῒ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃς· καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς.

ThomsonAnd when he came to Jerusalem, and waited on the king, and the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Memphibosthe?

BrentonAnd Memphibosthe the son of Saul's son went down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, nor pared his nails, nor shaved himself, neither had he washed his garments, from the day that the king departed, until the day when he arrived in peace.

ThomsonMemphibosthe said to the king, O my lord the king, my servant deceived me. For thy servant said to him, Saddle me the ass, that I may mount thereon and go with the king. (For thy servant is lame.)

BrentonAnd it came to pass when he went into Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Memphibosthe?

GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς, τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐπορεύθης μετʼ ἐμοῦ, Μεμφιβοσθέ;

ThomsonBut he acted deceitfully with thy servant, before my lord the king. But my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is good in thy sight.

BrentonAnd Memphibosthe said to him, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me; for thy servant said to him, Saddle me the ass, and I will ride upon it, and go with the king; for thy servant is lame.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὸν Μεμφιβοσθὲ, κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, ὁ δοῦλός μου παρελογίσατό με, ὅτι εἶπεν ὁ παῖς σου αὐτῷ, ἐπίσαξόν μοι τὴν ὄνον, καὶ ἐπιβῶ ἐπʼ αὐτὴν, καὶ πορεύσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως, ὅτι χωλὸς ὁ δοῦλός σου.

ThomsonFor all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king, yet thou didst set thy servant among them who eat at thy table. What right then have I to cry any more to the king?

BrentonAnd he has dealt deceitfully with thy servant to my lord the king: but my lord the king is as an angel of God, and do thou that which is good in thine eyes.

GreekΚαὶ μεθώδευσεν ἐν τῷ δούλῳ σου πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα· καὶ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς ὡς ἄγγελος τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ποίησον τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου.

ThomsonAnd the king said to him, What need of more words. I have said, Thou and Siba shall divide the fields.

BrentonFor all the house of my father were but as dead men before my lord the king; yet thou hast set thy servant among them that eat at thy table: and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king?

GreekὍτι οὐκ ἦν πᾶς ὁ οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου, ἀλλʼ ἢ ὅτι ἄνδρες θανάτου τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἐν τοῖς ἐσθίουσι τὴν τράπεζάν σου· καὶ τί ἐστι μοὶ ἔτι δικαίωμα, καὶ τοῦ κεκραγέναι με ἔτι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα;

ThomsonWhereupon Memphibosthe said to the king, Nay, let him take all, seeing my lord the king is returned to his house in peace.

BrentonAnd the king said to him, Why speakest thou any longer of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Siba shall divide the land.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς, ἱνατί λαλεῖς ἔτι τοὺς λόγους σου; εἶπον, σὺ καὶ Σιβὰ διελεῖσθε τὸν ἀγρόν.

ThomsonBerzelli, the Galaadite, also came down from Rogellim, and crossed the Jordan with the king, to convoy him over the Jordan.

BrentonAnd Memphibosthe said to the king, Yea, let him take all, since my lord the king has come in peace to his house.

ThomsonNow Berzelli was a very old man, being then eighty years of age, and he had supplied the king and his household with provisions at Manaim, for he was a very wealthy man.

BrentonAnd Berzelli the Galaadite came down from Rogellim, and crossed over Jordan with the king, that he might conduct the king over Jordan.

BrentonLet, I pray thee, thy servant remain, and I will die in my city, by the tomb of my father and of my mother. And, behold, thy servant Chamaam shall go over with my lord the king; and do thou to him as it seems good in thine eyes.

Why then have you affronted us, and why was not our opinion taken before that of Juda, to bring the king back? Then the words of the men of Juda were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

BrentonAnd all the men of Juda answered the men of Israel, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us: and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king's food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion?

BrentonAnd the men of Israel answered the men of Juda, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we are older than you, we have also an interest in David above you: and why have ye thus insulted us, and why was not our advice taken before that of Juda, to bring back our king? And the speech of the men of Juda was sharper than the speech of the men of Israel.
