ThomsonAGAIN the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, when one among them over persuaded David, saying, Go number Israel and Juda.

BrentonAnd the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israel, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Juda.

ThomsonBut the word of the king prevailed against Joab, and the officers of the army. So Joab and the chiefs of the army before the king, went out to review the people, Israel.

Or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies while they pursue thee? Or shall there be three days of pestilence in thy land? Now therefore consider; and see what answer I shall make to Him who sent me.

BrentonAnd Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose one of these things to befal thee, whether there shall come upon thee for three years famine in thy land; or that thou shouldest flee three months before thine enemies, and they should pursue thee; or that there should be for three days mortality in thy land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

ThomsonThereupon David said to Gad, I am in great straits on every side. Pray let me fall into the hands of the Lord; for very many and great are His mercies. But let me not fall into the hands of men.

BrentonAnd David said to Gad, On every side I am much straitened: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his compassions are very many; and let me not fall into the hands of man.

Stay thy hand. Now the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Orna, the Jebusite.

BrentonAnd the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

ThomsonThen Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take, and offer to the Lord what is agreeable to him. Behold here are cattle for a whole burnt offering, and the carts and the yokes of the cattle for fuel.

BrentonAnd Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord that which is good in his eyes: behold, here are oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood.

ThomsonBut the king said to Orna, No. Let me only purchase them of thee for their full value; for I cannot offer to the Lord my God a whole burnt offering which costeth me nothing. So David purchased the threshing floor, and the cattle, for fifty shekels of silver.

BrentonAnd the king said to Orna, Nay, but I will surely buy it of thee at a fair price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God a whole-burnt-offering for nothing. So David purchased the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ὀρνὰ, οὐχὶ, ὅτι ἀλλὰ κτώμενος κτήσομαι παρὰ σοῦ ἐν ἀναλλάγματι, καὶ οὐκ ἀνοίσω τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Θεῷ ὁλοκαύτωμα δωρεάν. Καὶ ἐκτήσατο Δαυὶδ τὸν ἅλωνα καὶ τοὺς βόας ἐν ἀργυρίῳ σίκλων πεντήκοντα.

ThomsonAnd David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered whole burnt offerings and peace offerings. Now Solomon afterwards enlarged this altar; for at first it was small. Thus the Lord was entreated for the land, and the slaughter was stopped from Israel.
