ThomsonNOW when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side, from all his enemies round about,

BrentonAnd it came to pass when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him an inheritance on every side free from all his enemies round about him;

Thomsonthe king said to Nathan the prophet, Behold I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth in the midst of the tabernacle.

Brentonthat the king said to Nathan the prophet, Behold now, I live in a house of cedar, and the ark of the Lord dwells in the midst of a tent.

ThomsonUpon which Nathan said to the king, Whatever may be in thy heart, go and do; for the Lord is with thee.

ThomsonGo and say to My servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Art not thou to build Me a house to dwell in?

BrentonGo, and say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord, Thou shalt not build me a house for me to dwell in.

Greekκαὶ εἶπον πρὸς τὸν δοῦλόν μου Δαυὶδ, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, οὐ σὺ οἰκοδομήσεις μοι οἶκον τοῦ κατοικῆσαί με.

ThomsonBecause I did not dwell in a house from the day I brought the children of Israel out of Egypt even to this day, but continued walking about in a temporary abode and in a tabernacle.

ThomsonIn all the places through which I passed with all Israel, did I ever speak to any tribe of Israel whom I commanded to feed My people Israel, and say, Why have you not built for Me a house of cedar?

ThomsonBut now, thus shalt thou say to My servant David, Thus saith the Lord Almighty, I took thee from the sheepcot to be ruler over My people—over Israel;

BrentonAnd now thus shalt thou say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord Almighty, I took thee from the sheep-cote, that thou shouldest be a prince over my people, over Israel.

Thomsonand I have been with thee whithersoever thou didst go, and have destroyed all thine enemies from before thee, and made thee renowned according to the renown of the great men on the earth;

Thomsonand I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and plant them, and they shall dwell by themselves, and shall no more be in trouble; nor shall a son of wickedness any more humble them as heretofore,

ThomsonHe shall build a house for My name, and I will raise up again his throne forever.

GreekΑὐτὸς οἰκοδομήσει μοι οἶκον τῷ ὀνόματί μου, καὶ ἀνορθώσω τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ ἕως εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

ThomsonI will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son. And when his iniquity shall come, I will correct him with a rod of men, and with scourges of the children of men,

BrentonI will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. And when he happens to transgress, then will I chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men.

Thomsonbut I will not withdraw My mercy from him as I withdrew it from them whom I removed from My presence.

BrentonBut my mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from those whom I removed from my presence.

GreekΤὸ δὲ ἔλεός μου οὐκ ἀποστήσω ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ, καθὼς ἀπέστησα ἀφʼ ὧν ἀπέστησα ἐκ προσώπου μου.

ThomsonHis house and his kingdom shall be established forever before me and his throne shall be raised up again forever.

BrentonAnd his house shall be made sure, and his kingdom for ever before me, and his throne shall be set up for ever.

GreekΚαὶ πιστωθήσεται ὁ οἶκος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος ἐνώπιόν μου· καὶ ὁ θρόνος αὐτοῦ ἔσται ἀνωρθωμένος εἰς τον αἰῶνα.

ThomsonAccording to all these words and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

ThomsonWhereupon king David went in and sat down before the Lord, and said, Who am I, O Lord, my Lord! and what is my house that Thou hast loved me to such a degree!

GreekΚαὶ εἰσῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ, καὶ ἐνάθισεν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, καὶ εἶπε, τίς εἰμι ἐγὼ, Κύριέ μου Κύριε, καὶ τίς ὁ οἶκός μου, ὅτι ἠγάπησάς με ἕως τούτων;

ThomsonThough I was contemptibly little before Thee, O Lord, my Lord! yet Thou hast spoken respecting the house of Thy servant for a great while to come. With regard to this law of the man, O Lord, my Lord!

BrentonWhereas I was very little before thee, O Lord, my Lord, yet thou spokest concerning the house of thy servant for a long time to come. And is this the law of man, O Lord, my Lord?

GreekΚαὶ κατεσμικρύνθην μικρὸν ἐνώπίον σου, Κύριέ μου Κύριε, καὶ ἐλάλησας ὑπὲρ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ δούλου σου εἰς μακράν· οὗτος δὲ ὁ νόμος τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, Κύριέ μου Κύριε;

Thomsonwhat more shall David presume to say to Thee? Now then, Thou, O Lord, my Lord! knowest Thy servant,

BrentonAnd what shall David yet say to thee? and now thou knowest thy servant, O Lord, my Lord.

GreekΚαὶ τί προσθήσει Δαυὶδ ἔτι τοῦ λαλῆσαι πρὸς σέ; καὶ νῦν σὺ οἶδας τὸν δοῦλόν σου, Κύριέ μου Κύριε,

Thomsonand on account of Thy servant Thou hast done, and according to Thine own heart hast made all this greatness in order to make known to Thy servant

BrentonAnd thou hast wrought for thy servant's sake, and according to thy heart thou hast wrought all this greatness, to make it known to thy servant,

Greekκαὶ διὰ τὸν δοῦλόν σου πεποίηκας, καὶ κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν σου ἐποίησας πᾶσαν τὴν μεγαλωσύνην ταύτην, γνωρίσαι τῷ δούλῳ σου, ἕνεκεν τοῦ μεγαλύναι σε

Thomsonwith respect to the magnifying of Thee, O my Lord! that there is none like Thee,

Brentonthat he may magnify thee, O my Lord; for there is no one like thee, and there is no God but thou among all of whom we have heard with our ears.

GreekΚύριέ μου· ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ὡς σὺ, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι Θεὸς πλὴν σοῦ ἐν πᾶσιν οἷς ἠκούσαμεν ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ἡμῶν.

Thomsonand that there is not a god besides Thee among all that we have heard of with our ears. Moreover what other nation is there on the earth like Thy people Israel? How hath God gone before them to redeem a people for Himself—to make Thyself a name—to display majesty and an appearance of deity—to drive out from before Thy people, whom Thou hadst redeemed for Thyself out of Egypt, nations and wandering hordes!

BrentonAnd what other nation in the earth is as thy people Israel? whereas God was his guide, to redeem for himself a people to make thee a name, to do mightily and nobly, so that thou shouldest cast out nations and their tabernacles from the presence of thy people, whom thou didst redeem for thyself out of Egypt?

GreekΚαὶ τίς ὡς ὁ λαός σου Ἰσραὴλ ἔθνος ἄλλο ἐν τῇ γῇ; ὡς ὡδήγησεν αὐτὸν ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ λυτρώσασθαι αὐτῷ λαὸν, τοῦ θέσθαι σε ὄνομα, τοῦ ποιῆσαι μεγαλωσύνην καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν, τοῦ ἐκβαλεῖν σε ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ λαοῦ σου, οὓς ἐλυτρώσω σεαυτῷ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, ἔθνη καὶ σκηνώματα;

ThomsonThou indeed preparedst for Thyself Thy people Israel to be a people forever, and Thou, O Lord! wast their God.

BrentonAnd thou hast prepared for thyself thy people Israel to be a people for ever, and thou, Lord, art become their God.

GreekΚαὶ ἡτοίμασας σεαυτῷ τὸν λαόν σου Ἰσραὴλ εἰς λαὸν ἕως αἰῶνος, καὶ σὺ Κύριε ἐγένου αὐτοῖς εἰς Θεόν.

ThomsonNow therefore, O my Lord, confirm the word which Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant and his house, confirm it everlastingly, O Lord Almighty, O God of Israel.

BrentonAnd now, O my Lord, the Almighty Lord God of Israel, confirm the word for ever which thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and his house: and now as thou hast said,

GreekΚαὶ νῦν, κύριέ μου, ῥῆμα ὃ ἐλάλησας περὶ τοῦ δούλου σου καὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, πίστωσον ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος, Κύριε παντοκράτωρ θεὲ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ νῦν καθὼς ἐλάλησας,

ThomsonAnd now as Thou hast spoken let Thy name be magnified forever.

ThomsonO Lord Almighty, O God of Israel, Thou hast made a revelation to Thy servant, saying, I am to build a house for Thee; therefore Thy servant hath found this disposition of his heart to make this prayer to Thee.

BrentonAlmighty Lord God of Israel, thou hast uncovered the ear of thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house: therefore thy servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to thee.

GreekΚύριε παντοκράτωρ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ, ἀπεκάλυψας τὸ ὠτίον τοῦ δούλου σου, λέγων, οἶκον οἰκοδομήσω σοι· διὰ τοῦτο εὗρεν ὁ δοῦλός σου τὴν καρδίαν ἑαυτοῦ τοῦ προσεύξασθαι πρὸς σὲ τὴν προσευχὴν ταύτην.

ThomsonAnd now, O Lord, my Lord, Thou art God, and Thy words will be true, and Thou hast spoken these good things respecting Thy servant,

BrentonAnd now, O Lord my Lord, thou art God; and thy words will be true, and thou hast spoken these good things concerning thy servant.

GreekΚαὶ νῦν, Κύριέ μου Κύριε, σὺ εἶ Θεὸς, καὶ οἱ λόγοι σου ἔσονται ἀληθιναὶ, καὶ ἐλάλησας ὑπὲρ τοῦ δούλου σου τὰ ἀγαθὰ ταῦτα.

Thomsonnow then begin and bless the house of Thy servant, that it may continue forever before Thee. Since Thou O Lord, my Lord, hast spoken, therefore with Thy blessing, let the house of Thy servant be blessed, that it may continue forever.

BrentonAnd now begin and bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord, my Lord, hast spoken, and the house of thy servant shall be blessed with thy blessing so as to continue for ever.

GreekΚαὶ νῦν ἄρξαι καὶ εὐλόγησον τὸν οἶκον τοῦ δούλου σου, τοῦ εἶναι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἐνώπιόν σου· ὅτι σὺ Κύριέ μου Κύριε ἐλάλησας, καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς εὐλογίας σου εὐλογηθήσεται ὁ οἶκος τοῦ δούλου σου τοῦ εἶναι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
