ThomsonIT having seemed good in the sight of Darius, he set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps to be governors of provinces throughout his whole dominion;

BrentonAnd Darius the Mede succeeded to the kingdom, being sixty-two years old.

Greekκαὶ Δαρεῖος ὁ Μῆδος παρέλαβε τὴν βασιλείαν, ὢν ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα δύο.

Thomsonand over these he appointed three ministers, of whom Daniel was one; that the governors might render an account to them, so that the king might not be oppressed with business.

BrentonAnd it pleased Darius, and he set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, to be in all his kingdom;

GreekΚαὶ ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον Δαρείου, καὶ κατέστησεν ἐπὶ τῆς βασιλείας σατράπας ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι, τοῦ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ,

ThomsonAnd Daniel was at the head of these. Because there was in him an extraordinary spirit and the king had set him over his whole kingdom,

Brentonand over them three governors, of whom one was Daniel; for the satraps to give account to them, that the king should not be troubled.

Greekκαὶ ἐπάνω αὐτῶν τακτικοὺς τρεῖς, ὃς ἦν Δανιὴλ εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν, τοῦ ἀποδιδόναι αὐτοῖς τοὺς σατράπας λόγον, ὅπως ὁ βασιλεὺς μὴ ἐνοχλῆται.

Thomsontherefore the ministers and the governors sought to find some pretext against Daniel. And when they found no pretext, lapse or crime with which to charge him (for he was faithful)

BrentonAnd Daniel was over them, for there was an excellent spirit in him; and the king set him over all his kingdom.

GreekΚαὶ ἦν Δανιὴλ ὑπὲρ αὐτοὺς, ὅτι πνεῦμα περισσὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐφʼ ὅλης τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonthe ministers said, We shall not find any pretext against Daniel except in the ceremonies relating to his God.

BrentonThen the governors and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel; but they found against him no occasion, nor trespass, nor error, because he was faithful.

GreekΚαὶ οἱ τακτικοὶ καὶ οἱ σατράπαι ἐζήτουν πρόφασιν εὑρεῖν κατὰ Δανιήλ· καὶ πᾶσαν πρόφασιν καὶ παράπτωμα καὶ ἀμπλάκημα οὐχ εὗρον κατʼ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι πιστὸς ἦν.

ThomsonThen the ministers and the governors waited on the king, and said to him: King Darius live forever!

BrentonAnd the governors said, We shall not find occasion against Daniel, except in the ordinances of his God.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπον οἱ τακτικοὶ, οὐχ εὑρήσομεν κατὰ Δανιὴλ πρόφασιν, εἰ μὴ ἐν νομίμοις Θεοῦ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAll that are over thy kingdom, the generals and governors, the chief commanders and toparchs have joined in opinion to establish by a royal statute and make a firm decree, that whoever shall make any request of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee only, O king; he shall be cast into the den of the lions.

BrentonThen the governors and satraps stood by the king, and said to him, King Darius, live for ever.

GreekΤότε οἱ τακτικοὶ καὶ οἱ σατράπαι παρέστησαν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Δαρεῖε βασιλεῦ, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ζῆθι.

ThomsonNow therefore, O king, establish the edict and promulgate it in writing, that the decree of the Persians and Medes may not be dispensed with.

BrentonAll who preside over thy kingdom, captains and satraps, chiefs and local governors, have taken counsel together, to establish by a royal statute and to confirm a decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.

GreekΣυνεβουλεύσαντο πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς βασιλείας σου στρατηγοὶ καὶ σατράπαι, ὕπατοι καὶ τοπάρχαι, τοῦ στῆσαι στάσει βασιλικῇ, καὶ ἐνισχῦσαι ὁρισμόν, ὅπως ὃς ἂν αἰτήσῃ αἴτημα παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπου, ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα, ἀλλʼ ἢ παρὰ σοῦ βασιλεῦ, ἐμβληθήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.

ThomsonUpon this Darius the king ordered the decree to be written.

BrentonNow then, O king, establish the decree, and publish a writ, that the decree of the Persians and Medes be not changed.

GreekΝῦν οὖν βασιλεῦ στῆσον τὸν ὁρισμὸν, καὶ ἔκθες γραφὴν, ὅπως μὴ ἀλλοιωθῇ τὸ δόγμα Περσῶν καὶ Μήδων.

ThomsonNow when Daniel knew that the decree was passed, he went home and the windows in his upper chamber towards Jerusalem were opened for him, and three times a day, kneeling down on his knees, he prayed and gave thanks before his God as he had done heretofore.

BrentonThen king Darius commanded the decree to be written.

GreekΤότε ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος ἐπέταξε γραφῆναι τὸ δόγμα.

ThomsonNow those men watched and having found Daniel praising and supplicating his God,

BrentonAnd when Daniel knew that the decree was ordered, he went into his house; and his windows were opened in his chambers toward Jerusalem, and three times in the day he knelt upon his knees, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he used to do before.

GreekΚαὶ Δανιὴλ ἡνίκα ἔγνω ὅτι ἐνετάγη τὸ δόγμα, εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ· καὶ αἱ θυρίδες ἀνεῳγμέναι αὐτῷ ἐν τοῖς ὑπερῴοις αὐτοῦ κατέναντι Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ καιροὺς τρεῖς τῆς ἡμέρας ἦν κάμπτων ἐπὶ τὰ γόνατα αὐτοῦ, καὶ προσευχόμενος καὶ ἐξομολογούμενος ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτοῦ, καθὼς ἦν ποιῶν ἔμπροσθεν.

Thomsonthey went and said to the king: O king, hast thou not passed an edict, that every man who shall make any request of any god or man for the space of thirty days save of thee only, O king, shall be cast into the den of the lions? And the king said, It is true; and the decree of the Medes and Persians cannot be altered.

BrentonThen these men watched, and found Daniel praying and supplicating to his God.

GreekΤότε οἱ ἄνδρες ἐκεῖνοι παρετήρησαν, καὶ εὗρον τὸν Δανιὴλ ἀξιοῦντα καὶ δεόμενον τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonThen they answered and said before the king: Daniel, who is one of the captives from Juda, hath not paid obedience to thy decree. For three times a day he maketh requests of his God.

BrentonAnd they came and said to the king, O king, hast thou not made a decree, that whatsoever man shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, but of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? And the king said, The word is true, and the decree of the Medes and Persians shall not pass.

GreekΚαὶ προσελθόντες λέγουσι τῷ βασιλεῖ, βασιλεῦ, οὐχ ὁρισμὸν ἔταξας, ὅπως πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἂν αἰτήσῃ παρὰ παντὸς θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπου αἴτημα, ἕως ἡμερῶν τριάκοντα, ἀλλʼ ἢ παρὰ σοῦ βασιλεῦ, ἐμβληθήσεται εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων; καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς, ἀληθινὸς ὁ λόγος, καὶ τὸ δόγμα Μήδων καὶ Περσῶν οὐ παρελεύσεται.

ThomsonWhen the king heard this matter he was exceedingly grieved for it and strove hard for Daniel to save him and continued till evening his endeavours to deliver him.

BrentonThen they answered and said before the king, Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judea, has not submitted to thy decree; and three times in the day he makes his requests of his God.

GreekΤότε ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ λέγουσιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως, Δανιὴλ, ὁ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας τῆς Ἰουδαίας, οὐχ ὑπετάγη τῷ δόγματί σου· καὶ καιροὺς τρεῖς τῆς ἡμέρας αἰτεῖ παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτοῦ τὰ αἰτήματα αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonThen the men said to the king Know, O king, that it is decreed by the Medes and Persians, that no edict or statute which the king shall pass must be dispensed with.

BrentonThen the king, when he heard the saying, was much grieved for Daniel, and he greatly exerted himself for Daniel to deliver him: and he exerted himself till evening to deliver him.

GreekΤότε ὁ βασιλεὺς, ὡς τὸ ῥῆμα ἤκουσε, πολὺ ἐλυπήθη ἐπʼ αὐτῷ, καὶ περὶ τοῦ Δανιὴλ ἠγωνίσατο τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι αὐτὸν, καὶ ἕως ἑσπέρας ἦν ἀγωνιζόμενος τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι αὐτόν.

ThomsonThen the king gave orders and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. And the king said to Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually will Himself deliver thee.

BrentonThen those men said to the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, that we must not change any decree or statute which the king shall make.

GreekΤότε οἱ ἄνδρες ἐκεῖνοι λέγουσι τῷ βασιλεῖ, γνῶθι βασιλεῦ, ὅτι τὸ δόγμα Μήδοις καὶ Πέρσαις, τοῦ πᾶν ὁρισμὸν καὶ στάσιν ἣν ἂν ὁ βασιλεὺς στήσῃ, οὐ δεῖ παραλλάξαι.

ThomsonAnd when they had brought a stone and put it on the mouth of the den, the king caused it to be sealed with his own signet and with the signet of his nobles that nothing might be altered in respect to Daniel.

BrentonThen the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. But the king said to Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

GreekΤότε ὁ βασιλεὺς εἶπε· καὶ ἢγαγον τὸν Δανιὴλ, καὶ ἐνέβαλον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Δανιὴλ, ὁ Θεός σου, ᾧ σὺ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς, αὐτὸς ἐξελεῖταί σε.

ThomsonThen the king went to his house and retired to bed without supper. And there was no food brought to him and sleep went from him. But God shut the mouths of the lions so that they did not molest Daniel.

BrentonAnd they brought a stone, and put it on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his ring, and with the ring of his nobles; that the case might not be altered with regard to Daniel.

GreekΚαὶ ἤνεγκαν λίθον, καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα τοῦ λάκκου, καὶ ἐσφραγίσατο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ τῶν μεγιστάνων αὐτοῦ, ὅπως μὴ ἀλλοιωθῇ πρᾶγμα ἐν τῷ Δανιήλ.

ThomsonAnd in the morning the king arose as soon as it was light and went in haste to the lions’ den.

BrentonAnd the king departed to his house, and lay down fasting, and they brought him no food; and his sleep departed from him. But God shut the mouths of the lions, and they did not molest Daniel.

GreekΚαὶ ἀπῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἄδειπνος, καὶ ἐδέσματα οὐκ εἰσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ· καὶ ὁ ὕπνος ἀπέστη ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἔκλεισεν ὁ Θεὸς τὰ στόματα τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐ παρηνώχλησαν τῷ Δανιήλ.

ThomsonAnd when he approached the den, he cried with a loud voice, O Daniel, the servant of the living God, hath thy God, whom thou servest continually, been able to deliver thee from the mouths of the lions?

BrentonThen the king arose very early in the morning, and came in haste to the den of lions.

GreekΤότε ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀνέστη τὸ πρωῒ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ, καὶ ἐν σπουδῇ ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων.

ThomsonThereupon Daniel said to the king, O king live forever!

BrentonAnd when he drew near to the den, he cried with a loud voice, Daniel, servant of the living God, has thy God, whom thou servest continually, been able to deliver thee from the lion's mouth?

GreekΚαὶ ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν αὐτὸν τῷ λάκκῳ, ἐβοήσε φωνῇ ἰσχυρᾷ, Δανιὴλ, ὁ δοῦλος τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος, ὁ Θεός σου ᾧ σὺ λατρεύεις ἐνδελεχῶς, εἰ ἠδυνήθη ἐξελέσθαί σε ἐκ στόματος τῶν λεόντων;

ThomsonMy God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions and they have not hurt me. For before Him rectitude was found in me; and even in thy sight, O king, I have committed no offence.

BrentonAnd Daniel said to the king, O king, live for ever.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Δανιὴλ τῷ βασιλεῖ, βασιλεῦ, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ζῆθι.

ThomsonAt this the king was exceedingly rejoiced and gave order to take Daniel up out of the den. So he was taken up out of the den and there was no manner of hurt found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

BrentonMy God has sent his angel, and stopped the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me: for uprightness was found in me before him; and moreover before thee, O king, I have committed no trespass.

GreekὉ Θεός μου ἀπέστειλε τὸν ἄγγελον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνέφραξε τὰ στόματα τῶν λεόντων, καὶ οὐκ ἐλυμήναντό με, ὅτι κατέναντι αὐτοῦ εὐθύτης εὑρέθη ἐμοὶ, καὶ ἐνώπιον δὲ σου βασιλεῦ παράπτωμα οὐκ ἐποίησα.

ThomsonThen the king commanded and they brought the men who had accused Daniel, and they and their sons and their wives were cast into the den of the lions. And before they reached the bottom of the den the lions had such mastery over them that they broke all their bones.

BrentonThen the king was very glad for him, and he commanded to bring Daniel out of the den. So Daniel was brought out of the den, and there was found no hurt upon him, because he believed in his God.

GreekΤότε ὁ βασιλεὺς πολὺ ἠγαθύνθη ἐπʼ αὐτῷ, καὶ τὸν Δανιὴλ εἶπεν ἀνενέγκαι ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου· καὶ ἀνηνέχθη Δανιὴλ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου· καὶ πᾶσα διαφθορὰ οὐχ εὑρέθη ἐν αὐτῷ, ὅτι ἐπίστευσεν ἐν τῷ Θεῷ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonThen Darius the king wrote:—To all the peoples, tribes and languages who dwell in the whole earth, Peace be multiplied to you.

BrentonAnd the king commanded, and they brought the men that had accused Daniel, and they were cast into the den of lions, they, and their children, and their wives: and they reached not the bottom of the den before the lions had the mastery of them, and utterly broke to pieces all their bones.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς, καὶ ἠγάγοσαν τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς διαβαλόντας τὸν Δανιὴλ, καὶ εἰς τὸν λάκκον τῶν λεόντων ἐνεβλήθησαν αὐτοὶ, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν· καὶ οὐκ ἔφθασαν εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος τοῦ λάκκου, ἕως οὗ ἐκυρίευσαν αὐτῶν οἱ λέοντες, καὶ πάντα τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν ἐλέπτυναν.

ThomsonFrom my presence this decree is established, that in every government of my kingdom men tremble and be struck with awe at the presence of the God of Daniel; for He is the living God and endureth forever, and His kingdom can never be destroyed and His dominion will be to the end.

BrentonThen king Darius wrote to all nations, tribes, and languages, who dwell in all the earth, saying, Peace be multiplied to you.

GreekΤότε Δαρεῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔγραψε πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς, φυλαῖς, γλώσσαις, τοῖς οἰκοῦσιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ· εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πληθυνθείη.

ThomsonHe supporteth and delivereth and doth signs and wonders in heaven and on earth. He it is Who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

BrentonThis decree has been set forth by me in every dominion of my kingdom, that men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living and eternal God, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his dominion is for ever.

GreekἘκ προσώπου μου ἐτέθη δόγμα τοῦτο ἐν πάσῃ ἀρχῇ τῆς βασιλείας μου, εἶναι τρέμοντας καὶ φοβουμένους ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ Θεοῦ Δανιήλ, ὅτι αὐτός ἐστι Θεὸς ζῶν, καὶ μένων εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ οὐ διαφθαρήσεται, καὶ ἡ κυρεία αὐτοῦ ἕως τέλους·

ThomsonSo Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

BrentonHe helps and delivers, and works signs and wonders in the heaven and on the earth, who has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.

GreekἈντιλαμβάνεται καὶ ῥύεται, καὶ ποιεῖ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅστις ἐξείλατο τὸν Δανιὴλ ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν λεόντων.
