1
ThomsonTHEN we turned, and took up our march into the wilderness, by the way to the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me. And when we had been many days circling round mount Seir,
BrentonAnd we turned and departed into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we compassed mount Seir many days.
2
Thomsonthe Lord said to me,
BrentonAnd the Lord said to me,
3
ThomsonYou have been long enough circling round this mountain, therefore turn northward
BrentonYe have compassed this mount long enough; turn therefore toward the north.
4
Thomsonand give thou a charge to this people, saying, You are about to march along by the borders of your brethren, the children of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, and dread you exceedingly.
BrentonAnd charge the people, saying, Ye are going through the borders of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they shall fear you, and dread you greatly.
5
ThomsonYou must not come to battle with them; for I will not give you a foot of their land because I have given mount Seir to the children of Esau for a possession.
BrentonDo not engage in war against them, for I will not give you of their land even enough to set your foot upon, for I have given mount Seir to the children of Esau as an inheritance.
6
ThomsonBuy provisions of them for money, that you may eat, and receive of them water by measure, for money, that you may drink;
BrentonBuy food of them for money and eat, and ye shall receive water of them by measure for money, and drink.
7
Thomsonfor the Lord our God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hands. Recollect how thou didst traverse that great and frightful wilderness. Behold! for forty years the Lord thy God was with thee. Thou wast not in want of anything.
BrentonFor the Lord our God has blessed thee in every work of thy hands. Consider how thou wentest through that great and terrible wilderness: behold, the Lord thy God has been with thee forty years; thou didst not lack any thing.
8
ThomsonAnd when we had passed by our brethren, the children of Esau, who inhabit Seir, by the way of Araba, from Ailon to Gasion-Gaber, and wheeling about had crossed the wilderness of Moab,
BrentonAnd we passed by our brethren the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the way of Araba from Ælon and from Gesion Gaber; and we turned and passed by the way of the desert of Moab.
9
Thomsonthe Lord said to me: Act not as enemies against the Moabites, nor come to a battle with them, for I will not give you for a possession any of their land; for I have given Aroer to the children of Lot, that they may inherit it.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to me, Do not ye quarrel with the Moabites, and do not engage in war with them; for I will not give you of their land for an inheritance, for I have given Aroer to the children of Lot to inherit.
10
ThomsonNow the Ommins had formerly dwelt there, a nation great and numerous,
BrentonFormerly the Ommin dwelt in it, a great and numerous nation and powerful, like the Enakim.
11
Thomsonand mighty as the Enakims—they as well as the Enakims may be accounted Raphains; but the Moabites call them Ommins.
BrentonThese also shall be accounted Raphain like the Enakim; and the Moabites call them Ommin.
12
ThomsonAnd in Seir the Chorrites were formerly settled, but the children of Esau destroyed them, and rooted them out from before them, and dwelt in their stead, in the same manner as Israel hath done with the land of their possession which the Lord hath given them.
BrentonAnd the Chorrhite dwelt in Seir before, and the sons of Esau destroyed them, and utterly consumed them from before them; and they dwelt in their place, as Israel did to the land of his inheritance, which the Lord gave to them.
13
ThomsonNow therefore arise, and strike your tents, and cross the valley of Zaret.
BrentonNow then, arise ye, said I, and depart, and cross the valley of Zaret.
14
ThomsonNow the time we spent from Kades-Barne till we came to the valley of Zaret, was thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the warriors had fallen, and died out of the camp.
BrentonAnd the days in which we travelled from Cades Barne till we crossed the valley of Zaret, were thirty and eight years, until the whole generation of the men of war failed, dying out of the camp, as the Lord God sware to them.
15
ThomsonAs the Lord had, with an oath denounced against them, the hand of the Lord was upon them to destroy them from among the host until they had all fallen.
BrentonAnd the hand of the Lord was upon them to destroy them out of the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.
16
ThomsonAnd when all the warriors had fallen, and died from among the people,
BrentonAnd it came to pass when all the men of war dying out of the midst of the people had fallen,
17
Thomsonthe Lord spoke to me, saying,
Brentonthat the Lord spoke to me, saying,
18
ThomsonThou art now to pass by Aroer, along the borders of Moab.
BrentonThou shalt pass over this day the borders of Moab to Aroer;
GreekΜωὰβ τὴν Ἀροὴρ,
19
ThomsonWhen you come near to the children of Amman you must not act hostilely against them, nor come to battle with them; for I will not give thee any of the land of the children of Amman for a possession, because I have given it for a possessiou to the children of Lot.
Brentonand ye shall draw nigh to the children of Amman: do not quarrel with them, nor wage war with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Amman for an inheritance, because I have given it to the children of Lot for an inheritance.
20
ThomsonIt may be accounted the land of the Raphains, for the Raphains formerly dwelt there, but the Ammanites call them Zochommins.
BrentonIt shall be accounted a land of Raphain, for the Raphain dwelt there before, and the Ammanites call them Zochommin.
21
ThomsonThey, as well as the Enakims, were a nation great and numerous, and much stronger than you; but the Lord destroyed them from before the Ammanites, and they took possession of the country, and have dwelt therein, in their stead, even to this day.
BrentonA great nation and populous, and mightier than you, as also the Enakim: yet the Lord destroyed them from before them, and they inherited their land, and they dwelt there instead of them until this day.
22
ThomsonThe same was the case with the children of Esau who inhabit Seir. They, in like manner, destroyed the Chorrites from before them, and took possession of their country, and have dwelt therein, in their stead, even to this day.
BrentonAs they did to the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, even as they destroyed the Chorrhite from before them, and inherited their country, and dwelt therein instead of them until this day.
23
ThomsonSo it was with the Evites when they dwelt in Asedoth, even to Gaza. The Cappadocians, who came out of Cappadocia, rooted them out, and dwelt in their stead.
BrentonAnd the Evites who dwell in Asedoth to Gaza, and the Cappadocians who came out of Cappadocia, destroyed them, and dwelt in their room.
24
ThomsonNow therefore arise, strike your tents, and cross the vale of Arnon; for behold I have delivered into thy hand Seon, king of Esebon, the Amorite, with his land. Begin to take possession. Join battle with him this day.
BrentonNow then arise and depart, and pass over the valley of Arnon: behold, I have delivered into thy hands Seon the king of Esebon the Amorite, and his land: begin to inherit it: engage in war with him this day.
25
ThomsonBegin to impress the fear of thee, and the dread of thee, on the face of all the nations under heaven. They who hear of thy name shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
BrentonBegin to put thy terror and thy fear on the face of all the nations under heaven, who shall be troubled when they have heard thy name, and shall be in anguish before thee.
26
ThomsonNow I had sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedamoth to Seon, king of Esebon, with words of peace, saying,
BrentonAnd I sent ambassadors from the wilderness of Kedamoth to Seon king of Esebon with peaceable words, saying,
27
ThomsonLet me pass through thy land. I will march along the highway, and not turn aside to the right, nor to the left.
BrentonI will pass through thy land: I will go by the road, I will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
28
ThomsonThou shalt sell me provisions for money, that I may eat; and thou shalt sell me water for money, that I may drink, just till I can march through on foot;
BrentonThou shalt give me food for money, and I will eat; and thou shalt give me water for money, and I will drink; I will only go through on my feet:
29
Thomsonas the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and the children of Moab, who dwell in Aroer have done to me, until I cross the Jordan, to the land which the Lord our God giveth us.
Brentonas the sons of Esau did to me, who dwelt in Seir, and the Moabites who dwelt in Aroer, until I shall have passed Jordan into the land which the Lord our God gives us.
30
ThomsonBut Seon, king of Esebon, would not consent that we should pass by him; for the Lord our God had emboldened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might be delivered into thy hands, as at this day.
BrentonAnd Seon king of Esebon would not that we should pass by him, because the Lord our God hardened his spirit, and made his heart stubborn, that he might be delivered into thy hands, as on this day.
31
ThomsonThen the Lord said to me, Behold I have begun to deliver up before thee Seon, king of Esebon, the Amorite, and his land. Begin therefore to take possession of his land.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to me, Behold, I have begun to deliver before thee Seon the king of Esebon the Amorite, and his land, and do thou begin to inherit his land.
32
ThomsonSo Seon, king of Esebon, came out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle at Jassa.
BrentonAnd Seon the king of Esebon came forth to meet us, he and all his people to war at Jassa.
33
ThomsonAnd the Lord our God delivered him up before us. And we smote him and his sons, and all his people,
BrentonAnd the Lord our God delivered him before our face, and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
34
Thomsonand took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed every city one after another, with their wives and children. We left none to be taken alive.
BrentonAnd we took possession of all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed every city in succession, and their wives, and their children; we left no living prey.
35
ThomsonBesides making a prey of their cattle, we took the spoils of their cities.
BrentonOnly we took the cattle captive, and took the spoil of the cities.
36
ThomsonFrom Aroer, which is on the banks of the brook Arnon, including the city in the vale, even to mount Galaad, there was not a city which escaped us. The Lord our God delivered them all into our hands.
BrentonFrom Aroer, which is by the brink of the brook of Arnon, and the city which is in the valley, and as far as the mount of Galaad; there was not a city which escaped us: the Lord our God delivered all of them into our hands.
37
ThomsonMoreover, when, without approaching the children of Amman, we had taken all his territories on the brook Jabok, and his cities in the hilly country, as the Lord our God commanded us, we turned and went up the way to Basan.
BrentonOnly we did not draw near to the children of Amman, even all the parts bordering on the brook Jaboc, and the cities in the mountain country, as the Lord our God charged us.
