ThomsonTHEN the Lord spake to Moses saying, Go to Pharao, for I have suffered the heart of him and his attendants to continue stubborn that these My signs might come upon them in succession,

Thomsonthat you may tell in the hearing of your children even to your children’s children, with what contempt I have treated the Egyptians, even these my signs which I have done among them, and you will know that I am the Lord.
Brentonthat ye may relate in the ears of your children, and to your children's children, in how many things I have mocked the Egyptians, and my wonders which I wrought among them; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

ThomsonThen Moses and Aaron went in before Pharao and said to him, Thus saith the Lord the God of the Hebrews. How long wilt thou refuse to reverence Me? Send away My people that they may serve Me.

ThomsonOtherwise, if thou refuse to let My people go, behold at this time tomorrow I will bring a swarm of locusts on all thy borders
BrentonBut if thou wilt not send my people away, behold, at this hour to-morrow I will bring an abundance of locusts upon all thy coasts.

Thomsonand they shall cover the face of the ground, so that thou shalt not be able to see the ground; and they shall devour all the remaining product of the land which the hail hath left you; and they shall devour every tree which groweth for you in the land.
BrentonAnd they shall cover the face of the earth, and thou shalt not be able to see the earth; and they shall devour all that is left of the abundance of the earth, which the hail has left you, and shall devour every tree that grows for you on the land.

ThomsonAnd thy houses and the houses of thy servants, all the houses of the Egyptians throughout the whole land, shall be filled in such a manner as thy fathers and their forefathers never saw from the time they had an existence in the land even to this day. And Moses turned and went out from Pharao.
BrentonAnd thy houses shall be filled, and the houses of thy servants, and all the houses in all the land of the Egyptians; things which thy fathers have never seen, nor their forefathers, from the day that they were upon the earth until this day. And Moses turned away and departed from Pharao.

ThomsonUpon this the attendants of Pharao said to him, How long shall this be a snare to us? Send the men away that they may serve their God. Dost thou not know that Egypt is ruined?
BrentonAnd the servants of Pharao say to him, How long shall this be a snare to us? send away the men, that they may serve their God; wilt thou know that Egypt is destroyed?

ThomsonThen they brought back Moses and Aaron to Pharao; and he said to them, Go and serve the Lord your God. But who, and who are going?
BrentonAnd they brought back both Moses and Aaron to Pharao; and he said to them, Go and serve the Lord your God; but who are they that are going with you?

ThomsonAnd Moses said, We must go with young and old, with our sons and daughters, and with our flocks and herds, for it is the festival of the Lord.
BrentonAnd Moses said, We will go with the young and the old, with our sons, and daughters, and sheep, and oxen, for it is a feast of the Lord.

ThomsonWhereupon he said to them, The Lord be so with you! as I send you away, must I also send away your substance? Take notice! you have wicked intentions.
BrentonAnd he said to them, So let the Lord be with you: as I will send you away, must I send away your store also? see that evil is attached to you.

ThomsonNo: Let the men go and worship; for this is what you desire. So they drove them out from the presence of Pharao.
BrentonNot so, but let the men go and serve God, for this ye yourselves seek; and they cast them out from the presence of Pharao.

ThomsonThen the Lord said to Moses, Stretch forth thy hand against the land of Egypt, and let the locust come up against the land. And it shall devour every herb of the field and all the fruit of the trees which the hail hath left.

ThomsonSo Moses lifted up the staff towards heaven and the Lord brought a south wind upon the land all that day and all that night, and by the morning the south wind had lifted up a swarm of locusts and wafted it over the whole land of Egypt: and it settled on all the borders of Egypt—an immense swarm.
BrentonAnd Moses lifted up his rod towards heaven, and the Lord brought a south wind upon the earth, all that day and all that night: the morning dawned, and the south wind brought up the locusts,

ThomsonSuch a swarm of locusts had never been before it, nor shall there ever be such a one hereafter.
Brentonand brought them up over all the land of Egypt. And they rested in very great abundance over all the borders of Egypt. Before them there were not such locusts, neither after them shall there be.

ThomsonIt covered the whole surface of the ground and the land was wasted. And it devoured every herb of the ground and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. There was nothing green left among the trees, or among the herbs of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.
BrentonAnd they covered the face of the earth, and the land was wasted, and they devoured all the herbage of the land, and all the fruit of the trees, which was left by the hail: there was no green thing left on the trees, nor on all the herbage of the field, in all the land of Egypt.

ThomsonUpon this Pharao sent in haste for Moses and Aaron and said; I have sinned in the sight of the Lord your God and against you;
BrentonAnd Pharao hasted to call Moses and Aaron, saying, I have sinned before the Lord your God, and against you;
GreekΚατέσπευδε δὲ Φαραὼ καλέσαι Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν, λέγων, ἡμάρτηκα ἐναντίον Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν, καὶ εἰς ὑμᾶς.

Thomsontherefore forgive this offence of mine this once more, and pray to the Lord your God; and let him remove from me this pestilence.
Brentonpardon therefore my sin yet this time, and pray to the Lord your God, and let him take away from me this death.

Thomsonand the Lord brought a contrary wind with great violence from the sea; and it lifted up the swarm of locusts and cast it into the Red Sea, and there was not one locust left in all the land of Egypt.
BrentonAnd the Lord brought in the opposite direction a strong wind from the sea, and took up the locusts and cast them into the Red Sea, and there was not one locust left in all the land of Egypt.

ThomsonBut the Lord suffered Pharao’s heart to be stubborn so that he did not let the Israelites go.
BrentonAnd the Lord hardened the heart of Pharao, and he did not send away the children of Israel.
GreekΚαὶ ἐσκλήρυνε Κύριος τὴν καρδίαν Φαραὼ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξαπέστειλε τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonThen the Lord said to Moses, Stretch forth thy hand towards heaven and let there be darkness over the land of Egypt—a palpable darkness.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out thy hand to heaven, and let there be darkness over the land of Egypt—darkness that may be felt.

ThomsonSo Moses stretched forth his hand towards heaven, and there was a darkness—a thick, turbid darkness over the whole land of Egypt three days.

ThomsonThen Pharao sent for Moses and Aaron and said, Go and worship the Lord your God. But you must leave your flocks and your herds. Your baggage may go with you.
BrentonAnd Pharao called Moses and Aaron, saying, Go, serve the Lord your God, only leave your sheep and your oxen, and let your store depart with you.

ThomsonAnd Moses said, But thou must give us burnt offerings and sacrifices to offer to the Lord our God.
BrentonAnd Moses said, Nay, but thou shalt give to us whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices, which we will sacrifice to the Lord our God.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς, ἀλλὰ καὶ σὺ δώσεις ἡμῖν ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ θυσίας, ἂ ποιήσομεν Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν.

ThomsonOur cattle therefore must go with us. We cannot leave a hoof behind. For of them we must take to worship the Lord our God; and we do not know with what we are to worship the Lord our God, until we come there.
BrentonAnd our cattle shall go with us, and we will not leave a hoof behind, for of them we will take to serve the Lord our God: but we know not in what manner we shall serve the Lord our God, until we arrive there.

ThomsonNow the Lord had suffered the heart of Pharao to continue stubborn so that he would not let the people go,
BrentonBut the Lord hardened the heart of Pharao, and he would not let them go.
GreekἘσκλήρυνε δὲ Κύριος τὴν καρδίαν Φαραὼ, καὶ οὐκ ἐβουλήθη ἐξαποστεῖλαι αὐτούς.

Thomsontherefore Pharao said, Begone from me. Take heed to thyself not to see my face any more. For the day thou appearest before me thou shalt die.
BrentonAnd Pharao says, Depart from me, beware of seeing my face again, for in what day thou shalt appear before me, thou shalt die.

ThomsonWhereupon Moses said, Thou hast spoken. I will not appear again in thy presence.
BrentonAnd Moses says, Thou hast said, I will not appear in thy presence again.
