1
ThomsonTHEN the Lord spoke to Moses saying,
BrentonAnd the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
2
ThomsonSpeak to the children of Israel and let them turn and encamp on the ground between Magdolus and the sea, from the sheepcot on the one side to Beelsepphon on the other. In front of these thou shalt encamp by the sea;
BrentonSpeak to the children of Israel, and let them turn and encamp before the village, between Magdol and the sea, opposite Beel-sepphon: before them shalt thou encamp by the sea.
3
Thomsonwhereupon Pharao will say to his people, The Israelites have lost their way in the land for the wilderness hath shut them in.
BrentonAnd Pharao will say to his people, As for these children of Israel, they are wandering in the land, for the wilderness has shut them in.
4
ThomsonAnd I will make Pharao’s heart stout, so that he will pursue them, and I shall be glorified by Pharao and by all his army. And all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord. Accordingly the Israelites did so.
BrentonAnd I will harden the heart of Pharao, and he shall pursue after them; and I will be glorified in Pharao, and in all his host, and all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord. And they did so.
5
ThomsonNow when the king of the Egyptians was told that the people had fled, his heart and the heart of his servants were turned against the people. And they said, What is this we have done in sending the Israelites away from serving us?
BrentonAnd it was reported to the king of the Egyptians that the people had fled: and the heart of Pharao was turned, and that of his servants against the people; and they said, What is this that we have done, to let the children of Israel go, so that they should not serve us?
GreekΚαὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ βασιλεῖ τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ὅτι πέφευγεν ὁ λαός· καὶ μετεστράφη ἡ καρδία Φαραὼ, καὶ τῶν θεραπόντων αὐτοῦ, ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν, καὶ εἶπαν, τί τοῦτο ἐποιήσαμεν, τοῦ ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ, τοῦ μὴ δουλεύειν ἡμῖν;
6
ThomsonTherefore Pharao equipped his chariots and took all his people with him.
BrentonSo Pharao yoked his chariots, and led off all his people with himself:
7
ThomsonAnd having selected six hundred chosen chariots and all the cavalry of the Egyptians and officers of the highest rank over all
Brentonhaving also taken six hundred chosen chariots, and all the cavalry of the Egyptians, and rulers over all.
8
Thomson(for the Lord had emboldened the heart of Pharao king of Egypt and of his attendants) he pursued the Israelites. Though the Israelites had gone out with a high hand,
BrentonAnd the Lord hardened the heart of Pharao king of Egypt, and of his servants, and he pursued after the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went forth with a high hand.
9
Thomsonyet the Egyptians pursued them with all the cavalry and the chariots of Pharao. And his horsemen and his army found them encamped by the sea with the sheepcot on one flank and Beelsepphon on the other.
BrentonAnd the Egyptians pursued after them, and found them encamped by the sea; and all the cavalry and the chariots of Pharao, and the horsemen, and his host were before the village, over against Beel-sepphon.
10
ThomsonAnd as Pharao approached; the children of Israel raising their eyes saw the Egyptians encamping in their rear and were greatly terrified. And the Israelites cried to the Lord,
BrentonAnd Pharao approached, and the children of Israel having looked up, beheld, and the Egyptians encamped behind them: and they were very greatly terrified, and the children of Israel cried to the Lord;
11
Thomsonand said to Moses, Was it because there were no graves in the land of Egypt, that thou hast brought us out to die in the wilderness? Why hast thou dealt thus with us in bringing us out of Egypt?
Brentonand said to Moses, Because there were no graves in the land of Egypt, hast thou brought us forth to slay us in the wilderness? What is this that thou hast done to us, having brought us out of Egypt?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Μωυσῆν, παρὰ τὸ μὴ ὑπάρχειν μνήματα ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ἐξήγαγες ἡμᾶς θανατῶσαι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν, ἐξαγαγὼν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου;
12
ThomsonIs not this what we told thee in Egypt saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it was better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this wilderness.
BrentonIs not this the word which we spoke to thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians? for it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this wilderness.
13
ThomsonWhereupon Moses said to the people, Take courage; stand still and see the salvation which cometh from the Lord—which he will work for you this day. For in the manner you have seen the Egyptians this day, you shall never see them again any more.
BrentonAnd Moses said to the people, Be of good courage: stand and see the salvation which is from the Lord, which he will work for us this day; for as ye have seen the Egyptians to-day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
14
ThomsonThe Lord will fight for you. Be ye therefore silent.
BrentonThe Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
15
ThomsonNow the Lord had said to Moses, Why criest thou to Me? Speak to the children of Israel and let them prepare for marching.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Why criest thou to me? speak to the children of Israel, and let them proceed.
16
ThomsonAnd lift thou up thy staff and stretch forth thy hand over the sea and divide it, and let the children of Israel go into the midst of the sea as on dry ground.
BrentonAnd do thou lift up thy rod, and stretch forth thy hand over the sea, and divide it, and let the children of Israel enter into the midst of the sea on the dry land.
17
ThomsonAnd behold I will embolden the heart of Pharao and of all the Egyptians and they will go in after them. And I shall be glorified by Pharao and by all his army and by his chariots and by his horses.
BrentonAnd lo! I will harden the heart of Pharao and of all the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them; and I will be glorified upon Pharao, and on all his host, and on his chariots and his horses.
18
ThomsonAnd all the Egyptians shall know, that I am the Lord when I make Myself glorious by Pharao and by his chariots and his horses.
BrentonAnd all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I am glorified upon Pharao and upon his chariots and his horses.
19
ThomsonNow the Angel of the Lord who marched before the camp of the Israelites had removed and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud had removed from the front and taken its station in the rear.
BrentonAnd the angel of God that went before the camp of the children of Israel removed and went behind, and the pillar of the cloud also removed from before them and stood behind them.
20
ThomsonAnd when it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel and had taken its station; there came on a thick darkness and night intervened so that they did not intermix one with the other during that whole night.
BrentonAnd it went between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel, and stood; and there was darkness and blackness; and the night passed, and they came not near to one another during the whole night.
21
ThomsonAnd Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the Lord restrained the sea that whole night with a strong south easterly wind and made the sea dry ground; and the water was cleft asunder.
BrentonAnd Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the Lord carried back the sea with a strong south wind all the night, and made the sea dry, and the water was divided.
22
ThomsonAnd the Israelites went into the midst of the sea as on dry ground. And the water thereof was a wall on the right and a wall on the left.
BrentonAnd the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the water of it was a wall on the right hand and a wall on the left.
23
ThomsonAnd the Egyptians pursued and went in after them, even all Pharao’s cavalry and his chariots and charioteers, into the midst of the sea.
BrentonAnd the Egyptians pursued them and went in after them, and every horse of Pharao, and his chariots, and his horsemen, into the midst of the sea.
24
ThomsonAnd in the morning watch, the Lord cast a look on the army of the Egyptians with the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the Egyptian army into confusion,
BrentonAnd it came to pass in the morning watch that the Lord looked forth on the camp of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and troubled the camp of the Egyptians,
25
Thomsonand entangled their chariot wheels and caused them to drag on heavily; whereupon the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
Brentonand bound the axle-trees of their chariots, and caused them to go with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.
26
ThomsonThen the Lord said to Moses, Stretch forth thy hand over the sea and bring back the water to its place; and let it overwhelm the Egyptians, their chariots and their horsemen.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Stretch forth thine hand over the sea, and let the water be turned back to its place, and let it cover the Egyptians coming both upon the chariots and the riders.
27
ThomsonSo Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and about daybreak the water was brought back to its place. And when the Egyptians were fleeing below the water the Lord shook them off in the midst of the sea;
BrentonAnd Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the water returned to its place toward day; and the Egyptians fled from the water, and the Lord shook off the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28
Thomsonand the water being brought back to its place overwhelmed the chariots and the horsemen and all the host of Pharao who had marched after the Israelites into the sea, so that not one of them was left.
BrentonAnd the water returned and covered the chariots and the riders, and all the forces of Pharao, who entered after them into the sea: and there was not left of them even one.
29
ThomsonBut the Israelites marched on dry ground in the midst of the sea, and the water was a wall to them on their right and on their left.
BrentonBut the children of Israel went along dry land in the midst of the sea, and the water was to them a wall on the right hand, and a wall on the left.
30
ThomsonThus did the Lord on that day deliver Israel out of the hand of the Egyptians. And Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
BrentonSo the Lord delivered Israel in that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead by the shore of the sea.
31
ThomsonAnd when Israel saw that great hand—what the Lord had done to the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord, and they put confidence in God and in Moses His servant.
BrentonAnd Israel saw the mighty hand, the things which the Lord did to the Egyptians; and the people feared the Lord, and they believed God and Moses his servant.
