Exodus 23

ThomsonThou shalt not be with the majority in wickedness, nor join with the multitude to shut out justice.

BrentonThou shalt not associate with the multitude for evil; thou shalt not join thyself with a multitude to turn aside with the majority so as to shut out judgment.

ThomsonIn passing judgment thou shalt not be influenced by compassion for the needy.

BrentonAnd thou shalt not spare a poor man in judgment.

ThomsonIf thou meet the ox of thy enemy or his ass going astray thou shalt turn it back and restore it to him.

BrentonAnd if thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt turn them back and restore them to him.

ThomsonAnd if thou seest thine enemy’s ass fallen under his burden thou shalt not pass it by, but shalt raise it up with its load.

BrentonAnd if thou see thine enemy's ass fallen under its burden, thou shalt not pass by it, but shalt help to raise it with him.

ThomsonThou shalt keep aloof from everything unjust. An innocent and a righteous man thou shalt not slay; nor shalt thou justify a wicked man for the sake of bribes.

BrentonThou shalt abstain from every unjust thing: thou shalt not slay the innocent and just, and thou shalt not justify the wicked for gifts.

ThomsonBribes thou shalt not receive, for they blind the eyes of them who see, and pervert judgment.

BrentonAnd thou shalt not receive gifts; for gifts blind the eyes of the seeing, and corrupt just words.

ThomsonYou shall not afflict a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

BrentonAnd ye shall not afflict a stranger, for ye know the heart of a stranger; for ye were yourselves strangers in the land of Egypt.

ThomsonSix years thou shalt sow thy ground and gather in the products thereof;

BrentonSix years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in the fruits of it.

Thomsonbut on the seventh thou shalt give it rest and let it lie fallow, that the poor of thy people may eat, and what they leave, let the wild beasts of the field eat. The same thou shalt do with thy vineyards and thy olives.

BrentonBut in the seventh year thou shalt let it rest, and leave it, and the poor of thy nation shall feed; and the wild beasts of the field shall eat that which remains: thus shalt thou do to thy vineyard and to thine oliveyard.

ThomsonSix days thou shalt do thy work; but on the seventh there shall be a rest; that thy ox and thy ass may rest: and that the son of thy handmaid and the stranger may repose.

BrentonSix days shalt thou do thy works, and on the seventh day there shall be rest, that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and that the son of thy maid-servant and the stranger may be refreshed.

ThomsonYou shall keep all that I have said to you; and make no mention of the name of strange gods, nor let it be heard out of your mouth.

BrentonObserve all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and ye shall make no mention of the name of other gods, neither shall they be heard out of your mouth.

Thomsonthe festival of unleavened bread you shall carefully observe. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I have commanded you, at the time fixed in the month of new things. For in that month thou didst come out of Egypt. Thou shalt not appear before me empty.

BrentonTake heed to keep the feast of unleavened bread: seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread, as I charged thee at the season of the month of new corn, for in it thou camest out of Egypt: thou shalt not appear before me empty.

ThomsonThou shalt also keep the festival of the ingathering of the first fruits of thy labours employed in sowing thy field; and the festival of completion at the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours from the field.

BrentonAnd thou shalt keep the feast of the harvest of first-fruits of thy labours, whatsoever thou shalt have sown in thy field, and the feast of completion at the end of the year in the gathering in of thy fruits out of thy field.

ThomsonThree times a year all thy males must appear before the Lord thy God; for when I have driven out the nations from before thee I will enlarge thy borders.

BrentonThree times in the year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God.

ThomsonThou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; nor shall the fat of my festival remain till the morning.

BrentonFor when I shall have cast out the nations from before thee, and shall have widened thy borders, thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, neither must the fat of my feast abide till the morning.

ThomsonThe dedications of the first products of thy land thou shalt bring to the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of its dam.

BrentonThou shalt bring the first-offerings of the first-fruits of thy land into the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a lamb in its mother's milk.

ThomsonNow behold I send My angel before thy face, that he may guard thee in the way, and bring thee to the land, which I have prepared for thee.

BrentonAnd, behold, I send my angel before thy face, that he may keep thee in the way, that he may bring thee into the land which I have prepared for thee.

ThomsonTake heed to thyself and hearken to him and disobey him not; for he should not withdraw from you; for My name is upon him.

BrentonTake heed to thyself and hearken to him, and disobey him not; for he will not give way to thee, for my name is on him.

ThomsonIf you will hearken diligently to this voice of Mine, and do whatever I command thee, and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me a peculiar people above all the nations; for the whole earth is Mine, but you shall be to Me a royal priesthood and a holy nation. These words you shall deliver to the children of Israel—If you will hearken diligently to My voice, and do all that I command thee, I will be an enemy to thy enemies, and an adversary to thy adversaries;

BrentonIf ye will indeed hear my voice, and if thou wilt do all the things I shall charge thee with, and keep my covenant, ye shall be to me a peculiar people above all nations, for the whole earth is mine; and ye shall be to me a royal priesthood, and a holy nation: these words shall ye speak to the children of Israel, If ye shall indeed hear my voice, and do all the things I shall tell thee, I will be an enemy to thine enemies, and an adversary to thine adversaries.

ThomsonFor My angel shall go before thee as thy leader, and conduct thee to the Amorite and the Chettite and the Pherezite and the Chananite and the Gergasite and the Evite and the Jebusite, and I will exterminate them.

BrentonFor my angel shall go as thy leader, and shall bring thee to the Amorite, and Chettite, and Pherezite, and Chananite, and Gergesite, and Evite, and Jebusite, and I will destroy them.

ThomsonThou shalt not worship their gods nor serve them. Thou shalt not do according to their works; but destroy utterly and break in pieces their pillars

BrentonThou shalt not worship their gods, nor serve them: thou shalt not do according to their works, but shalt utterly destroy them, and break to pieces their pillars.

Thomsonand worship the Lord thy God. And I will bless thy bread and thy wine and thy water, and turn away sickness from you.

BrentonAnd thou shalt serve the Lord thy God, and I will bless thy bread and thy wine and thy water, and I will turn away sickness from you.

ThomsonThere shall not be a man childless, nor a woman barren in thy land. The number of your days I will completely fulfill.

BrentonThere shall not be on thy land one that is impotent or barren. I will surely fulfil the number of thy days.

ThomsonAnd I will send terror before thee and confound all the nations to which thou shalt go; and cause all thy adversaries to flee before thee.

BrentonAnd I will send terror before thee, and I will strike with amazement all the nations to which thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies to flee.

ThomsonAnd I will send hornets before thee, and thou shalt drive out the Amorites and the Evites and the Chananites and the Chettites from before thee.

BrentonAnd I will send hornets before thee, and thou shalt cast out the Amorites and the Evites, and the Chananites and the Chettites from thee.

ThomsonI will not drive them out in one year, lest the land become a waste and the wild beasts of the earth multiply against thee.

BrentonI will not cast them out in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee.

ThomsonBy little and little I will drive them away from thee until thou art increased and canst possess the land.

BrentonBy little and little I will cast them out from before thee, until thou shalt be increased and inherit the earth.

ThomsonAnd I will establish thy boundaries from the Red Sea to the sea of Philisteim, and from the wilderness to the great river Euphrates, and deliver into your hands those who are settled in the land, or drive them out from before thee.

BrentonAnd I will set thy borders from the Red Sea, to the sea of the Phylistines, and from the wilderness to the great river Euphrates; and I will give into your hand those that dwell in the land, and will cast them out from thee.

ThomsonThou shalt not make a treaty with them and their gods,

BrentonThou shalt make no covenant with them and their gods.

Thomsonnor shall they dwell in thy land, lest they cause thee to sin against Me. For if thou serve their gods, they will be to thee a stumbling block.

BrentonAnd they shall not dwell in thy land, lest they cause thee to sin against me; for if thou shouldest serve their gods, these will be an offence to thee.
