ThomsonAGAIN it came to pass in the eleventh year on the first of the month, a word of the Lord came to me, saying,

GreekΚαὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ ἑνδεκάτῳ ἔτει, μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς, ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς μὲ, λέγων,

ThomsonSon of man, Because Sor hath said against Jerusalem, Aha! She is trodden down; the nations have destroyed her; she is turned over to me; she that was full is laid waste,—

BrentonSon of man, because Sor has said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is crushed: the nations are destroyed: she is turned to me: she that was full is made desolate:

GreekΥἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, ἀνθʼ οὗ εἶπε Σὸρ ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, εὖγε συνετρίβη, ἀπόλωλε τὰ ἔθνη, ἐπεστράφη πρὸς μὲ, ἡ πλήρης ἠρήμωται·

Thomsontherefore thus saith the Lord: Behold I am against thee, Sor, and I will bring up many nations against thee, as the sea cometh up with its waves.

Brentontherefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I am against thee, O Sor, and I will bring up many nations against thee, as the sea comes up with its waves.

GreekΔιατοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σὲ Σὸρ, καὶ ἀνάξω ἐπὶ σὲ ἔθνη πολλὰ, ὡς ἀναβαίνει ἡ θάλασσα τοῖς κύμασιν αὐτῆς.

ThomsonAnd they shall demolish the walls of Sor and break down thy towers; and I will brush away the loose earth from it and make it a bare rock.

BrentonAnd they shall cast down the walls of Sor, and shall cast down thy towers: and I will scrape her dust from off her, and make her a bare rock.

GreekΚαὶ καταβαλοῦσι τὰ τείχη Σὸρ, καὶ καταβαλοῦσι τοὺς πύργους σου, καὶ λικμήσω τὸν χοῦν αὐτῆς ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, καὶ δώσω αὐτὴν εἰς λεωπετρίαν·

ThomsonIt shall be a place to dry nets in the midst of the sea. As I have spoken, saith the Lord, It shall indeed be a prey for the nations;

BrentonShe shall be in the midst of the sea a place for repairing nets: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord: and it shall be a spoil for the nations.

GreekΨυγμὸς σαγηνῶν ἔσται ἐν μέσῳ θαλάσσης, ὅτι ἐγὼ λελάληκα, λέγει Κύριος· καὶ ἔσται εἰς προνομὴν τοῖς ἔθνεσι.

Thomsonand its daughters on the continent shall be slain with the sword: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

BrentonAnd her daughters which are in the field shall be slain with the sword, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

GreekΚαὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτῆς ἐν πεδίῳ μαχαίρᾳ ἀναιρεθήσονται, καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ Κύριος.

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord, Behold against thee, Sor, I will bring from the North, Nabuchodonosar king of Babylon, a king of kings, with horses and chariots and horsemen, and a great assembly of many nations. Thy daughters on the main land

BrentonFor thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will bring up against thee, O Sor, Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon from the north: he is a king of kings, with horses, and chariots, and horsemen, and a concourse of very many nations.

GreekὍτι τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπάγω ἐπὶ σὲ Σόρ τὸν Ναβουχοδονόσορ βασιλέα Βαβυλῶνος ἀπὸ τοῦ Βοῤῥᾶ, βασιλεὺς βασιλέων ἐστὶ, μεθʼ ἵππων καὶ ἁρμάτων καὶ ἱππέων καὶ συναγωγῆς ἐθνῶν πολλῶν σφόδρα.

Thomsonhe will slay with the sword; and he will lay siege to thee and surround thee with earthworks, and make a rampart against thee round about, with places for engines; and arrange his lances over against thee,

BrentonHe shall slay thy daughters that are in the field with the sword, and shall set a watch against thee, and build forts around thee, and carry a rampart round against thee, and set up warlike works, and array his spears against thee.

GreekΟὗτος τὰς θυγατέρας σου τὰς ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ μαχαίρᾳ ἀνελεῖ, καὶ δώσει ἐπὶ σὲ προφυλακὴν, καὶ περιοικοδομήσει, καὶ ποιήσει ἐπὶ σὲ κύκλῳ χάρακα, καὶ περίστασιν ὅπλων, καὶ τὰς λόγχας αὐτοῦ ἀπέναντί σου δώσει·

Thomsonand with his battle axes demolish thy walls and thy towers.

BrentonHe shall cast down with his swords thy walls and thy towers.

GreekΤὰ τείχη σου, καὶ τοὺς πύργους σου καταβαλεῖ ἐν ταῖς μαχαίραις αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonBy reason of the multitude of his horses their dust shall cover thee; and with the neighing of his horses and the rumbling of his chariot wheels thy walls shall shake when he entereth thy gates like one entering a city from the plain.

BrentonBy reason of the multitude of his horses their dust shall cover thee, and by reason of the sound of his horsemen and the wheels of his chariots thy walls shall be shaken, when he enters into thy gates, as one entering into a city from the plain.

GreekἈπὸ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν ἵππων αὐτοῦ κατακαλύψει σε ὁ κονιορτὸς αὐτῶν· καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φωνῆς τῶν ἱππέων αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν τροχῶν τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτοῦ σεισθήσεται τὰ τείχη σου, εἰσπορευομένου αὐτοῦ τὰς πύλας σου, ὡς εἰσπορευόμενος εἰς πόλιν ἐκ πεδίου.

ThomsonWith the hoofs of his horses all thy streets shall be trampled. He will slay thy people with the sword; and level to the ground the confidence of thy strength; and make a prey of thine army,

BrentonWith the hoofs of his horses they shall trample all thy streets: he shall slay thy people with the sword, and shall bring down to the ground the support of thy strength.

GreekἘν ταῖς ὁπλαῖς τῶν ἵππων αὐτοῦ καταπατήσουσί σου πάσας τὰς πλατείας· τὸν λαόν σου μαχαίρᾳ ἀνελεῖ, καὶ τὴν ὑπόστασιν τῆς ἰσχύος σου ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν κατάξει.

Thomsonand a spoil of thy wealth; and break down thy walls and demolish thy lovely houses; and thy stones and thy timbers and thy rubbish he will throw into the midst of the sea.

BrentonAnd he shall prey upon thy power, and plunder thy substance, and shall cast down thy walls, and break down thy pleasant houses: and he shall cast thy stones and thy timber and thy dust into the midst of thy sea.

GreekΚαὶ προνομεύσει τὴν δύναμίν σου, καὶ σκυλεύσει τὰ ὑπάρχοντά σου, καὶ καταβαλεῖ τὰ τείχη σου, καὶ τοὺς οἴκους σου τοὺς ἐπιθυμητοὺς καθελεῖ· καὶ τοὺς λίθους σου, καὶ τὰ ξύλα σου, καὶ τὸν χοῦν σου εἰς μέσον τῆς θαλάσσης σου ἐμβαλεῖ.

ThomsonAnd he will put an end to the multitude of thy musicians, and the sound of thy psalteries shall no more be heard.

BrentonAnd he shall destroy the multitude of thy musicians, and the sound of thy psalteries shall be heard no more.

GreekΚαὶ καταλύσει τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μουσικῶν σου, καὶ ἡ φωνὴ τῶν ψαλτηρίων σου οὐ μὴ ἀκουσθῇ ἔτι.

ThomsonI will indeed make thee a bare rock. Thou shalt be a place for dryingnets, thou shalt never be rebuilded anymore; for I the Lord have spoken, saith the Lord.

BrentonAnd I will make thee a bare rock: thou shalt be a place to spread nets upon; thou shalt be built no more: for I the Lord have spoken it, saith the Lord.

GreekΚαὶ δώσω σε λεωπετρίαν, ψυγμὸς σαγηνῶν ἔσῃ, οὐ μὴ οἰκοδομηθῇς ἔτι, ὅτι ἐγὼ Κύριος ἐλάλησα, λέγει Κύριος.

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord God to Sor: At the sound of thy fall; at the groans of thy wounded, when the sword is drawn in the midst of thee, shall not the islands quake?

BrentonFor thus saith the Lord God to Sor; Shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, while the wounded are groaning, while they have drawn a sword in the midst of thee?

GreekΔιότι τάδε λέγει Κύριος Κύριος τῇ Σὸρ, οὐκ ἀπὸ φωνῆς τῆς πτώσεώς σου, ἐν τῷ στενάξαι τραυματίας, ἐν τῷ σπᾶσαι μάχαιραν ἐν μέσῳ σου, σεισθήσονται αἱ νῆσαι;

ThomsonYes, from their thrones will come down all the chiefs of the maritime nations, and they will take their crowns from their heads, and strip off their embroidered robes. They will be struck with consternation and sit on the ground, and be in dread of their own destruction and groan for thee.

BrentonAnd all the princes of the nations of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and shall take off their crowns from their heads, and shall take off their embroidered raiment: they shall be utterly amazed; they shall sit upon the ground, and fear their own destruction, and shall groan over thee.

GreekΚαὶ καταβήσονται ἀπὸ τῶν θρόνων αὐτῶν πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν τῆς θαλάσσης, καὶ ἀφελοῦνται τὰς μίτρας ἀπὸ τῶν κεφαλῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸν ἱματισμὸν τὸν ποικίλον αὐτῶν ἐκδύσονται· ἐκστάσει ἐκστήσονται, ἐπὶ γῆν καθεδοῦνται, καὶ φοβηθήσονται τὴν ἀπώλειαν αὐτῶν, καὶ στενάξουσιν ἐπὶ σὲ,

ThomsonAnd they will take up a lamentation for thee and say to thee, How art thou destroyed from the sea, O renowned city! which didst impress the terror of thee on all who inhabit its shores!

BrentonAnd they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and shall say to thee, How art thou destroyed from out of the sea, the renowned city, that brought her terror upon all her inhabitants.

Greekκαὶ λήψονται ἐπὶ σὲ θρῆνον, καὶ ἐροῦσί σοι, πῶς κατελύθης ἐκ θαλάσσης ἡ πόλις ἡ ἐπαινετὴ, ἡ δοῦσα τὸν φόβον αὐτῆς πᾶσι τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν αὐτήν;

ThomsonThe isles also will be terrified at the day of thy fall.

BrentonAnd the isles shall be alarmed at the day of thy fall.

GreekΚαὶ φοβηθήσονται αἱ νῆσοι ἀπὸ ἡμέρας πτώσεώς σου.

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord God: When I make thee a desolate city, like cities never to be rebuilded; when I bring up the abyss against thee, much water shall cover thee.

BrentonFor thus saith the Lord God; When I shall make the city desolate, as the cities that shall not be inhabited, when I have brought the deep up upon thee,

GreekὍτι τάδε λέγει Κύριος Κύριος, ὅταν δῶ πόλιν ἠρημωμένην ὡς τὰς πόλεις τὰς μὴ κατοικισθησομένας, ἐν τῷ ἀναγαγεῖν με ἐπὶ σὲ τὴν ἄβυσσον, καὶ κατακαλύψει σε ὕδωρ πολὺ,

ThomsonAnd I will press thee down to them who go down to the pit, to the people of old; and make thee dwell in the depths of the earth-in an everlasting desert, with them who go down to the pit; that thou mayst never be rebuilt nor rise again in the land of life.

Brentonand great waters shall cover thee; and I shall bring thee down to them that go down to the pit, to the people of old time, and shall cause thee to dwell in the depths of the earth, as in everlasting desolation, with them that go down to the pit, that thou mayest not be inhabited, nor stand upon the land of life;

Greekκαὶ καταβιβάσω σε πρὸς τοὺς καταβαίνοντας εἰς βόθρον πρὸς λαὸν αἰῶνος, καὶ κατοικιῶ σε εἰς βάθη τῆς γῆς ὡς ἔρημον αἰώνιον μετὰ καταβαινόντων εἰς βόθρον, ὅπως μὴ κατοικηθῇς, μηδὲ ἀναστῇς ἐπὶ γῆς ζωῆς,

ThomsonI will make thee a desolation; and thou shalt never come into existence again, saith the Lord God.

BrentonI will make thee a destruction, and thou shalt be no more for ever, saith the Lord God.

Greekἀπώλειάν σε δώσω, καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρξεις ἔτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος.
