1
ThomsonAND thou son of man, prophesy concerning the mountains of Israel, and say to the mountains of Israel, Hear a word of the Lord.
BrentonAnd thou, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say to the mountains of Israel, Hear ye the word of the Lord:
2
ThomsonThus saith the Lord God: For as much as against you the enemy said, Aha! these everlasting deserts are become our possession;
BrentonThus saith the Lord God; Because the enemy has said against you, Aha, the old waste places are become a possession for us:
3
Thomsontherefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God: Inasmuch as you have been despised and hated by them around you, by reason of your being a possession for the relics of nations, and you are become a byword and scoff to the nations:
Brentontherefore prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Because ye have been dishonoured, and hated by those round about you, that ye might be a possession to the remainder of the nations, and ye became a by-word, and a reproach to the nations:
4
Thomsontherefore, O mountains of Israel, hear a word of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord to the mountains and the hills, and to the brooks and valleys, even to the waste and desolate places, and to the cities which have been utterly forsaken; as they are become a prey and a haunt for the remnants of nations around.
Brentontherefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the streams, and to the valleys, and to the places that have been made desolate and destroyed, and to the cities that have been deserted, and have become a spoil and a trampling to the nations that were left round about;
5
ThomsonTherefore thus saith the Lord God: In the fire of My wrath I have spoken against these remnants of nations and against all Idumea, because they have with joy distributed this land of Mine among themselves for a possession, jeopardising lives that you might be a waste for prey.
Brentontherefore thus saith the Lord; Verily in the fire of my wrath have I spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Idumea, because they have appropriated my land to themselves for a possession with joy, disregarding the lives of the inhabitants, to destroy it by plunder:
6
ThomsonTherefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills and to the vales and forests,
Brentontherefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the valleys, and to the forests, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my wrath, because ye have borne the reproaches of the heathen:
7
ThomsonThus saith the Lord: Behold in My zeal and My wrath I have spoken; for inasmuch as you have borne the reproach of the nations; therefore I will lift up My hand against the nations around you; they shall bear their own dishonour: but your grapes and your fruits,
Brentontherefore I will lift up my hand against the nations that are round about you; they shall bear their reproach.
8
ThomsonO mountains of Israel, shall be eaten by My people. Because they have confident hopes of coming-
BrentonBut your grapes and your fruits, O mountains of Israel, shall my people eat; for they are hoping to come.
9
Thomsonbecause, lo1 I am over you, and I will watch over you; therefore you shall be cultivated and sown:
BrentonFor, behold, I am toward you, and I will have respect to you, and ye shall be tilled and sown:
10
Thomsonand upon you I will multiply men even the whole house of Israel; and the cities shall be rebuilt and the wastes inhabited:
Brentonand I will multiply men upon you, even all the house of Israel to the end: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the desolate land shall be built upon.
11
Thomsonand upon you I will multiply men and cattle, and cause you to be inhabited as in your former state. And I will deal kindly with you as I did in times of old; and you shall know that I am the Lord.
BrentonAnd I will multiply men and cattle upon you; and I will cause you to dwell as at the beginning, and will treat you well, as in your former times: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
12
ThomsonAnd I will cause men, my people Israel, to increase upon yon; and they shall inherit you, and you shall be a possession for them, and shall no more be without a succession of children from them.
BrentonAnd I will increase men upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall inherit you, and ye shall be to them for a possession; and ye shall no more be bereaved of them.
13
ThomsonThus saith the Lord God : For inasmuch they said of thee, Thou art a devourer of men, and art bereft of thy nation,-
BrentonThus saith the Lord God: Because they said to thee, Thou land devourest men, and hast been bereaved of thy nation;
14
ThomsonTherefore thou shalt no more devour men nor make thy nation childless, saith the Lord God.
Brentontherefore thou shalt no more devour men, and thou shalt no more bereave thy nation, saith the Lord God.
15
ThomsonAnd the reviling of nations shall no more be heard against you, nor shall you any more bear the reproaches of peoples, saith the Lord God.
BrentonAnd there shall no more be heard against you the reproach of the nations, and ye shall no more bear the revilings of the peoples, saith the Lord God.
16
ThomsonAgain a word of the Lord came to me, saying,
BrentonAnd the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
17
ThomsonSon of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their land, they polluted it with their ways and with their idols and with their impurities; and their way was in My view as the uncleanness of a woman in a state of [menstrual] separation.
BrentonSon of man, the house of Israel dwelt upon their land, and defiled it by their way, and with their idols, and with their uncleannesses; and their way was before me like the uncleanness of a removed woman.
18
ThomsonTherefore I poured out My wrath against them, and scattered them through the nations, (
BrentonSo I poured out my wrath upon them:
19
Thomsonand dispersed them through the countries: according to their way and according to their sin I judged them.
Brentonand I dispersed them among the nations, and utterly scattered them through the countries: I judged them according to their way and according to their sin.
20
ThomsonAnd when they went to the nations, wherever they went they profaned My holy name by saying that they were the people of the Lord and had come from His land;
BrentonAnd they went in among the nations, among which they went, and they profaned my holy name, while it was said of them, These are the people of the Lord, and they came forth out of his land.
21
Thomsonand that I had spared them for the sake of that holy name of Mine, which they, the house of Israel, profaned among the nations wherever they went.
BrentonBut I spared them for the sake of my holy name, which the house of Israel profaned among the nations, among whom they went.
22
ThomsonTherefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord: I deal thus with you, not for your sakes, 0 house of Israel, but only for the sake of My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.
BrentonTherefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord; I do not this, O house of Israel, for your sakes, but because of my holy name, which ye have profaned among the nations, among whom ye went.
23
ThomsonFor I will hallow My great name which hath been profaned, which you have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord when I am hallowed by you before their eyes.
BrentonAnd I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the nations, which ye profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, when I am sanctified among you before their eyes.
24
ThomsonWhen I take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and bring you into your own land;
BrentonAnd I will take you out from the nations, and will gather you out of all the lands, and will bring you into your own land:
25
Thomsonthen I will sprinkle upon you pure water, and you shall be cleansed from all your impurities and from all your idols. And when I have cleansed you,
Brentonand I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be purged from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols, and I will cleanse you.
26
ThomsonI will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you: I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh.
BrentonAnd I will give you a new heart, and will put a new spirit in you: and I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh, and will give you a heart of flesh.
27
ThomsonAnd I will put My spirit in you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and to keep My judgments and practise them.
BrentonAnd I will put my Spirit in you, and will cause you to walk in mine ordinances, and to keep my judgments, and do them.
28
ThomsonAnd you shall dwell in the land which I gave to your fathers; and you shall be My people and I will be your God.
BrentonAnd ye shall dwell upon the land which I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be to me a people, and I will be to you a God.
29
ThomsonAnd I will save you from all your impurities. And I will call for corn and multiply it: and no more send famine among you.
BrentonAnd I will save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and multiply it, and will not bring famine upon you.
30
ThomsonAnd I will multiply the fruit of the trees and the products of the field; that you may no more bear the reproach of famine among the nations.
BrentonAnd I will multiply the fruit of the trees, and the produce of the field, that ye may not bear the reproach of famine among the nations.
31
ThomsonThen will you call to remembrance your evil ways, and your devices which were not good; and in their sight be grieved for your iniquities and your abominations.
BrentonAnd ye shall remember your evil ways, and your practices that were not good, and ye shall be hateful in your own sight for your transgressions and for your abominations.
32
ThomsonIt is not for your sakes that I do this, saith the Lord, Lord. This you must needs know. Blush and be ashamed for your ways, O house of Israel.
BrentonNot for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, as it is known to you: be ye ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.
33
ThomsonThus saith Adonai* the Lord: When I have cleansed you from all your iniquities, I will cause your cities to be rebuilded and the desolate places shall be inhabited,
BrentonThus saith the Lord God; In the day wherein I shall cleanse you from all your iniquities I will also cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be built upon:
34
Thomsonand the land which was a waste shall be tilled. For as much as it was a waste in the sight of all who passed by;
Brentonand the desolate land shall be cultivated, whereas it was desolate in the eyes of every one that passed by.
35
Thomsontherefore they will say, This land which was a waste is become like a paradise, and the waste, ruined and demolished cities are become places of strength.
BrentonAnd they shall say, That desolate land is become like a garden of delight; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are inhabited.
36
ThomsonAnd the nations which may be left around you shall know that I the Lord have rebuilt the ruined cities and planted the grounds which were a waste. I the Lord have spoken and I will perform.
BrentonAnd the nations, as many as shall have been left round about you, shall know that I the Lord have built the ruined cities and planted the waste lands: I the Lord have spoken, and will do it.
37
ThomsonThus saith Adonai the Lord: Still, that they may do this, the house of Israel must seek Me.
BrentonThus saith the Lord God; Yet for this will I be sought by the house of Israel, to establish them; I will multiply them even men as sheep;
38
ThomsonI will multiply them like a flock, the men like holy flocks, like the flocks of Jerusalem at her festivals. So shall the wasted cities be filled with flocks of men, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
Brentonas holy sheep, as the sheep of Jerusalem in her feasts; thus shall the desert cities be full of flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
