ThomsonNOW Abraham was old and far advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed him in all things.

BrentonAnd Abraam was old, advanced in days, and the Lord blessed Abraam in all things.

ThomsonAnd Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his family and who was ruler over all that he had, Put thy hand under my thigh,

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν Ἁβραὰμ τῷ παιδὶ αὐτοῦ τῷ πρεσβυτέρῳ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ, τῷ ἄρχοντι πάντων τῶν αὐτοῦ, θὲς τὴν χεῖρά σου ὑπὸ τὸν μηρόν μου.

Thomsonand let me cause thee to swear by the Lord the God of heaven and the God of earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son Isaak, of the daughters of the Chananites among whom I dwell;

Brentonand I will adjure thee by the Lord the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou take not a wife for my son Isaac from the daughters of the Chananites, with whom I dwell, in the midst of them.

GreekΚαὶ ἐξορκιῶ σε Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τὸν Θεὸν τῆς γῆς, ἵνα μὴ λάβῃς γυναῖκα τῷ υἱῷ μου Ἰσαὰκ ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τῶν Χαναναίων, μεθʼ ὧν ἐγὼ οἰκῶ ἐν αὐτοις.

Thomsonbut that thou wilt go to the land where I was born, and to my tribe and take thence a wife for my son Isaak.

BrentonBut thou shalt go instead to my country, where I was born, and to my tribe, and thou shalt take from thence a wife for my son Isaac.

GreekἈλλʼ ἢ εἰς τὴν γῆν μου, οὗ ἐγεννήθην, πορεύσῃ, καὶ εἰς τὴν φυλήν μου, καὶ λήψῃ γυναῖκα τῷ υἱῷ μου Ἰσαὰκ ἐκεῖθεν.

ThomsonAnd the servant said to him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to come with me to this land; shall I take back thy son to the land from which thou camest?

BrentonAnd the servant said to him, Shall I carry back thy son to the land whence thou camest forth, if haply the woman should not be willing to return with me to this land?

GreekΕἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ παῖς, μή ποτε οὐ βούληται ἡ γυνὴ πορευθῆναι μετʼ ἐμοῦ ὀπίσω εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην, ἀποστρέψω τὸν υἱόν σου εἰς τὴν γῆν, ὅθεν ἐξῆλθες ἐκεῖθεν;

ThomsonWhereupon Abraham said to him, Beware that thou take not back my son thither.

BrentonAnd Abraam said to him, Take heed to thyself that thou carry not my son back thither.

ThomsonThe Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my nativity; who spoke to me, and who swore to me saying, To thee I will give this land and to thy seed; he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take thence a wife for my son.

BrentonThe Lord the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, who took me out of my father's house, and out of the land whence I sprang, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, I will give this land to thee and to thy seed, he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife to my son from thence.

ThomsonBut if the woman will not come with thee into this land, thou shalt be absolved from this my oath, save that thou must not take my son back thither.

BrentonAnd if the woman should not be willing to come with thee into this land, thou shalt be clear from my oath, only carry not my son thither again.

GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ θέλῃ ἡ γυνὴ πορευθῆναι μετὰ σοῦ εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην, καθαρὸς ἔσῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὅρκου μου· μόνον τὸν υἱόν μου μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς ἐκεῖ.

ThomsonThen the servant put his hand under his master Abraham’s thigh, and swore to him respecting this matter.

BrentonAnd the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraam, and swore to him concerning this matter.

GreekΚαὶ ἔθηκεν ὁ παῖς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ὑπὸ τὸν μηρὸν Ἁβραὰμ τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῷ περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου.

ThomsonAnd the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master; and of all the goods of his master which were in his charge, and arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nachor.

BrentonAnd the servant took ten camels of his master's camels, and he took of all the goods of his master with him, and he arose and went into Mesopotamia to the city of Nachor.

ThomsonAnd he made his camels lie down without the city, by the well of water, in the evening, when the women come out to draw water;

BrentonAnd he rested his camels without the city by the well of water towards evening, when damsels go forth to draw water.

GreekΚαὶ ἐκοίμησε τὰς καμήλους ἔξω τῆς πόλεως παρὰ τὸ φρέαρ τοῦ ὕδατος τὸ πρὸς ὀψέ, ἡνίκα ἐκπορεύονται αἱ ὑδρευόμεναι.

Thomsonand said, O Lord the God of my master Abraham, prosper the way before me this day; and shew thy kindness to my master Abraham.

BrentonAnd he said, O Lord God of my master Abraam, prosper my way before me to day, and deal mercifully with my master Abraam.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, Κύριε ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ κυρίου μου Ἁβραάμ, εὐόδωσον ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ σήμερον, καὶ ποίησον ἔλεος μετὰ τοῦ κυρίου μου Ἁβραάμ.

ThomsonBehold I stand by this well of water and the daughters of the inhabitants of the city will come out to draw water.

BrentonLo! I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of them that inhabit the city come forth to draw water.

GreekἸδοὺ ἐγὼ ἕστηκα ἐπὶ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος· αἱ δὲ θυγατέρες τῶν οἰκούντων τὴν πόλιν ἐκπορεύονται ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ.

ThomsonNow let the virgin to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher that I may drink; and who shall say, Drink thou, and I will give water also to thy camels till they have all done drinking; let her be the woman whom thou hast provided for thy servant Isaak. And by this I shall know that thou hast dealt mercifully with my master Abraham.

BrentonAnd it shall be, the virgin to whomsoever I shall say, Incline thy water-pot, that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink thou, and I will give thy camels drink, until they shall have done drinking—even this one thou hast prepared for thy servant Isaac, and hereby shall I know that thou hast dealt mercifully with my master Abraam.

ThomsonAnd before he had finished this mental speech, lo! Rebekka the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Melcha, the wife of Nachor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder.

BrentonAnd it came to pass before he had done speaking in his mind, that behold, Rebecca the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Melcha, the wife of Nachor, and the same the brother of Abraam, came forth, having a water-pot on her shoulders.

GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο πρὸ τοῦ συντελέσαι αὐτὸν λαλοῦντα ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ Ῥεβέκκα ἐξεπορεύετο ἡ τεχθεῖσα Βαθουήλ, υἱῷ Μελχὰς τῆς γυναικὸς Ναχώρ, ἀδελφοῦ δὲ Ἁβραάμ, ἔχουσα τὴν ὑδρίαν ἐπὶ τῶν ὤμων αὐτῆς.

ThomsonNow the damsel was of a very beautiful countenance and was a virgin. No man had known her. So when she had gone down to the well and filled her pitcher and came up,

BrentonAnd the virgin was very beautiful in appearance, she was a virgin, a man had not known her; and she went down to the well, and filled her water-pot, and came up.

GreekἩ δὲ παρθένος ἦν καλὴ τῇ ὄψει σφόδρα· παρθένος ἦν, ἀνὴρ οὐκ ἔγνω αὐτήν· καταβᾶσα δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν πηγὴν, ἔπλησε τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέβη.

Thomsonthe servant ran to meet her and said, Let me drink a little water out of thy pitcher.

BrentonAnd the servant ran up to meet her, and said, Give me a little water to drink out of thy pitcher;

GreekἘπέδραμε δὲ ὁ παῖς εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῆς, καὶ εἶπε, Πότισόν με μικρὸν ὕδωρ ἐκ τῆς ὑδρίας σου.

ThomsonUpon which she said, Drink, my lord, and hastened to let down the pitcher on her arm and let him drink till he was satisfied.

Brentonand she said, Drink, Sir; and she hasted, and let down the pitcher upon her arm, and gave him to drink, till he ceased drinking.

GreekἩ δὲ εἶπε, πίε, κύριε· καὶ ἔσπευσε καὶ καθεῖλε τὴν ὑδρίαν ἐπὶ τὸν βραχίονα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπότισεν αὐτὸν, ἕων ἐπαύσατο πίνων.

ThomsonThen she said, I will draw water for thy camels also until they shall have all drunk.

BrentonAnd she said, I will also draw water for thy camels, till they shall all have drunk.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, καὶ ταῖς καμήλοις σου ὑδρεύσομαι, ἕως ἂν πᾶσαι πίωσι.

ThomsonAnd she hastened and emptied the pitcher into the watering trough and ran to the well to draw more and drew water for all the camels.

BrentonAnd she hasted, and emptied the water-pot into the trough, and ran to the well to draw again, and drew water for all the camels.

GreekΚαὶ ἔσπευσε καὶ ἐξεκένωσε τὴν ὑδρίαν εἰς τὸ ποτιστήριον· καὶ ἔδραμεν ἐπὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἀντλῆσαι πάλιν· καὶ ὑδρεύσατο πάσαις ταῖς καμήλοις.

ThomsonAnd the man observed her attentively and held his peace, that he might know whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.

BrentonAnd the man took great notice of her, and remained silent to know whether the Lord had made his way prosperous or not.

GreekὉ δὲ ἄνθρωπος κατεμάνθανεν αὐτήν· καὶ παρεσιώπα τοῦ γνῶναι εἰ εὐώδωκε Κύριος τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ, ἢ οὔ.

ThomsonAnd when all the camels had done drinking, the man took earrings of gold of about a drachm weight, and a pair of bracelets for her hands, the weight of which was ten pieces of gold,

BrentonAnd it came to pass when all the camels ceased drinking, that the man took golden ear-rings, each of a drachm weight, and he put two bracelets on her hands, their weight was ten pieces of gold.

GreekἘγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἐπαύσαντο πᾶσαι αἱ κάμηλοι πίνουσαι, ἔλαβεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐνώτια χρυσᾶ ἀνὰ δραχμὴν ὁλκῆς, καὶ δύο ψέλλια ἐπὶ τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῆς, δέκα χρυσῶν ὁλκὴ αὐτῶν.

Thomsonand he asked her saying, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me, Is there room at thy father’s house for us to lodge?

BrentonAnd he asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me if there is room for us to lodge with thy father.

GreekΚαὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὴν, καὶ εἶπε, θυγάτηρ τίνος εἶ; ἀνάγγειλόν μοι, εἰ ἔστι παρὰ τῷ πατρί σου τόπος ἡμῖν του καταλῦσαι.

ThomsonAnd she said, I am the daughter of Bathuel, the son of Melcha, whom she bore to Nachor.

BrentonAnd she said to him, I am the daughter of Bathuel the son of Melcha, whom she bore to Nachor.

GreekἩ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, θυγάτηρ Βαθουήλ εἰμι τοῦ Μελχάς, ὃν ἔτεκε τῷ Ναχώρ.

ThomsonMoreover she said to him, We have plenty of straw and provender and room to lodge in.

BrentonAnd she said to him, We have both straw and much provender, and a place for resting.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Καὶ ἄχυρα καὶ χορτάσματα πολλὰ παρʼ ἡμῖν, καὶ τόπος τοῦ καταλῦσαι.

ThomsonThen the man being satisfied, worshipped the Lord

BrentonAnd the man being well pleased, worshipped the Lord,

GreekΚαὶ εὐδοκήσας ὁ ἄνθρωπος προσεκύνησε τῷ Κυρίῳ

Thomsonand said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not withdrawn his kindness and his truth from my master. The Lord hath indeed given me a prosperous journey to the house of my master’s brother.

Brentonand said, Blessed be the Lord the God of my master Abraam, who has not suffered his righteousness to fail, nor his truth from my master, and the Lord has brought me prosperously to the house of the brother of my lord.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν, εὐλογητὸς Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ κυρίου μου Ἁβραάμ, ὃς οὐκ ἐγκατέλειπε τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν, ἀπὸ τοῦ κυρίου μου· ἐμὲ τʼ εὐώδωκε Κύριος εἰς οἶκον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τοῦ κυρίου μου.

ThomsonUpon this the damsel ran to her mother’s house and told all these things.

BrentonAnd the damsel ran and reported to the house of her mother according to these words.

GreekΚαὶ δραμοῦσα ἡ παῖς ἀνήγγειλεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς, κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα.

ThomsonNow Rebekka had a brother whose name was Laban. And Laban ran out to the man at the well.

BrentonAnd Rebecca had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to meet the man, to the well.

GreekΤῇ δὲ Ῥεβέκκᾷ ἀδελφὸς ἦν, ᾧ ὄνομα Λάβαν· καὶ ἔδραμε Λάβαν πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἔξω ἐπὶ τὴν πηγήν.

ThomsonWhen he saw the earrings and bracelets in his sister’s hands and heard all the words of Rebekka his sister, saying, Thus spake the man to me, he went to the man who was standing by his camels at the well

BrentonAnd it came to pass when he saw the ear-rings and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heard the words of Rebecca his sister, saying, Thus the man spoke to me, that he went to the man, as he stood by the camels at the well.

GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα εἶδε τὰ ἐνώτια, καὶ τὰ ψέλλια ἐν ταῖς χερσὶ τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὅτε ἤκουσε τὰ ῥήματα Ῥεβέκκας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτοῦ, λεγούσης, οὕτω λελάληκέ μοι ὁ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ἦλθε πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἑστηκότος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῶν καμήλων ἐπὶ τῆς πηγῆς.

Thomsonand said to him, Come in, thou blessed of the Lord, why hast thou tarried without? I have the house ready and a place for the camels.

BrentonAnd he said to him, Come in hither, thou blessed of the Lord, why standest thou without, whereas I have prepared the house and a place for the camels?

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, δεῦρο εἴσελθε, εὐλογητὸς Κυροίυ· ἱνατί ἕστηκας ἔξω; ἐγὼ δὲ ἡτοίμασα τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ τόπον ταῖς καμήλοις.

ThomsonSo the man went in to the family, and Laban unsaddled the camels, and gave straw and provender to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him,

BrentonAnd the man entered into the house, and unloaded the camels, and gave the camels straw and provender, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men that were with him.

GreekΕἰσῆλθε δὲ ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ ἀπέσαξε τὰς καμήλους· καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄχυρα καὶ χορτάσματα ταῖς καμήλοις, καὶ ὕδωρ νίψασθαι τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοῖς ποσὶ τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν μετʼ αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonand set bread before them to eat. But the man said I cannot eat till I have told my business. And Laban said, speak.

BrentonAnd he set before them loaves to eat; but he said, I will not eat, until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on.

GreekΚαὶ παρέθηκεν αὐτοῖς ἄρτους φαγεῖν· καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ φάγω, ἕως τοῦ λαλῆσαί με τὰ ῥήματά μου· καὶ εἶπεν, λάλησον.

ThomsonThereupon the man said, I am Abraham’s servant,

BrentonAnd he said, I am a servant of Abraam;

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, παῖς Ἁβραὰμ ἐγώ εἰμι.

ThomsonThe Lord indeed hath blessed my master exceedingly, so that he is become great. He hath given him flocks and herds and silver and gold, men servants and maid servants, camels and asses.

Brentonand the Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he is exalted, and he has given him sheep, and calves, and silver, and gold, servants and servant-maids, camels, and asses.

GreekΚύριος δὲ ηὐλόγησε τὸν κύριόν μου σφόδρα, καὶ ὑψώθη· καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ πρόβατα, καὶ μόσχους, καὶ ἀργύριον, καὶ χρυσίον, παῖδας, καὶ παιδίσκας, καμήλους, καὶ ὄνους.

ThomsonAnd Sarah, the wife of my master, hath born one son to my master when he was old, and he hath given him all that belonged to him.

BrentonAnd Sarrha my master's wife bore one son to my master after he had grown old; and he gave him whatever he had.

GreekΚαὶ ἔτεκε Σάῤῥα ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ κυρίου μου υἱὸν ἕνα τῷ κυρίῳ μου μετὰ τὸ γηράσαι αὐτόν· καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὅσα ἦν αὐτῷ.

ThomsonAnd my master made me swear saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son from among the daughters of the Chananites in whose land I sojourn;

BrentonAnd my master caused me to swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Chananites, among whom I sojourn in their land.

GreekΚαὶ ὥρκισέ με ὁ κύριός μου, λέγων, οὐ λήμψῃ γυναῖκα τῷ υἱῷ μου ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τῶν Χαναναίων, ἐν οἷς ἐγὼ παροικῶ ἐν τῇ γῇ αὐτῶν.

Thomsonbut thou shalt go to the house of my father and to my tribe and take thence a wife for my son.

ThomsonWhereupon I said to my master, Perhaps the woman will not come with me.

BrentonAnd I said to my master, Haply the woman will not go with me.

GreekΕἶπα δὲ τῷ κυρίῳ μου, μήποτε οὐ πορεύσεται ἡ γυνὴ μετʼ ἐμοῦ.

ThomsonAnd he said to me, The Lord God, to Whom I have been well pleasing in His sight, will send His angel with thee, and make thy journey prosperous, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from my tribe and from my father’s house.

BrentonAnd he said to me, The Lord God to whom I have been acceptable in his presence, himself shall send out his angel with thee, and shall prosper thy journey, and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my tribe, and of the house of my father.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπέ μοι, Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ᾧ εὐηρέστησα ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς ἐξαποστελεῖ τὸν Ἀγγελον αὐτοῦ μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ εὐοδώσει τὴν ὁδόν σου· καὶ λήψῃ γυναῖκα τῷ υἱῷ μου ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς μου, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός μου.

ThomsonOn this condition only thou shalt be absolved from my curse; when thou hast gone to my tribe, if they will not give thee, then shalt thou be clear from my oath.

BrentonThen shalt thou be clear from my curse, for whensoever thou shalt have come to my tribe, and they shall not give her to thee, then shalt thou be clear from my oath.

GreekΤότε ἀθῷος ἔσῃ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀρᾶς μου· ἡνίκα γὰρ ἐὰν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν φυλήν μου, καὶ μή σοι δῶσι, καὶ ἔσῃ ἀθῷος ἀπὸ τοῦ ὁρκισμοῦ μου.

ThomsonNow, when I came to-day to the well, I said, O Lord the God of my master Abraham, if Thou prosperest the journey in which I am now engaged,

BrentonAnd having come this day to the well, I said, Lord God of my master Abraam, if thou prosperest my journey on which I am now going,

ThomsonLet the virgin to whom I shall say, Let me drink a little water out of thy pitcher; and who shall say to me, Drink thou, and I will draw water for thy camels; Let her be the wife whom the Lord hath provided for His servant Isaak; and by this I shall know that thou hast dealt mercifully with my master Abraham.

Brentonand she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will draw water for thy camels, this shall be the wife whom the Lord has prepared for his own servant Isaac; and hereby shall I know that thou hast wrought mercy with my master Abraam.

ThomsonAnd before I had finished this my address in thought, straightway Rebekka came with the pitcher on her shoulder and went down to the well and drew water, and I said to her, Let me drink.

BrentonAnd it came to pass before I had done speaking in my mind, straightway Rebecca came forth, having her pitcher on her shoulders; and she went down to the well, and drew water; and I said to her, Give me to drink.

BrentonAnd she hasted and let down her pitcher on her arm from her head, and said, Drink thou, and I will give thy camels drink; and I drank, and she gave the camels drink.

ThomsonI worshipped the Lord and blessed the Lord the God of my master Abraham, who had prospered me in the right way to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son.

BrentonAnd being well-pleased I worshipped the Lord, and I blessed the Lord the God of my master Abraam, who has prospered me in a true way, so that I should take the daughter of my master's brother for his son.

GreekΚαὶ εὐδοκήσας προσεκύνησα τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ εὐλόγησα Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν τοῦ κυρίου μου Ἁβραὰμ, ὃς εὐώδωσέ με ἐν ὁδῷ ἀληθείας λαβεῖν τὴν θυγατέρα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τοῦ κυρίου μου τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonNow therefore, if you deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. If not, tell me; that I may turn either to the right or left.

BrentonIf then ye will deal mercifully and justly with my lord, tell me, and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

GreekΕἰ οὖν ποιεῖτε ὑμεῖς ἔλεος καὶ δικαιοσύνην πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου· εἰ δὲ μὴ, ἀπαγγείλατέ μοι, ἵνα ἐπιστρέψω εἰς δεξιὰν ἤ ἀριστεράν.

ThomsonIn reply to which, Laban and Bathuel said, This matter hath proceeded from the Lord. We cannot gainsay thee, be it good or bad.

BrentonAnd Laban and Bathuel answered and said, This matter has come forth from the Lord, we shall not be able to answer thee bad or good.

GreekἈποκριθεὶς δὲ Λάβαν καὶ Βαθουὴλ εἶπαν, παρὰ κυρίου ἐξῆλθε τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο· οὐ δυνησόμεθά σοι ἀντειπεῖν κακὸν ἢ καλόν.

ThomsonBehold Rebekka is before thee. Take her and go and let her be the wife of thy master’s son, as the Lord hath spoken.

BrentonBehold, Rebecca is before thee, take her and go away, and let her be wife to the son of thy master, as the Lord has said.

ThomsonAnd when Abraham’s servant heard these words, he worshipped the Lord on the ground.

BrentonAnd it came to pass when the servant of Abraam heard these words, he bowed himself to the Lord down to the earth.

ThomsonAnd he said to them, Do not detain me, seeing the Lord hath prospered my journey as far as it respecteth me. Send me away that I may go back to my master.

BrentonBut he said to them, Hinder me not, for the Lord has prospered my journey for me; send me away, that I may depart to my master.

ThomsonWhereupon they said, Let us call our child and ask what she saith.

ThomsonAnd they blessed Rebekka and said to her, Thou art our sister. Mayest thou become thousands of myriads and may thy seed inherit the cities of their enemies.

ThomsonThen arose Rebekka and her maids, and mounting the camels they went with the man. And the servant took Rebekka and departed.

ThomsonNow Isaak had travelled through the wilderness to the well of Vision, and dwelt in the south country.

ThomsonAnd in the evening Isaak went out into the plain to meditate; and raising his eyes he saw camels coming.

BrentonAnd Isaac went forth into the plain toward evening to meditate; and having lifted up his eyes, he saw camels coming.

ThomsonRebekka also having raised her eyes, saw Isaak and alighted from her camel.

ThomsonShe had said to the servant, What man is that coming in the plain to meet us? And the servant said, It is my master. Whereupon she took her veil and covered herself.

Brentonand said to the servant, Who is that man that walks in the plain to meet us? And the servant said, This is my master; and she took her veil and covered herself.

ThomsonAnd the servant told Isaak all that he had done. And Isaak went to his mother’s house and took Rebekka, and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaak was comforted for the loss of his mother Sarah.
