ThomsonBehold! darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness, the nations: but upon thee the Lord will shine and His glory over thee will be conspicuous.
BrentonBehold, darkness shall cover the earth, and there shall be gross darkness on the nations: but the Lord shall appear upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
GreekἸδοὺ, σκότος καλύψει γῆν, καὶ γνόφος ἐπʼ ἔθνη, ἐπὶ δὲ σὲ φανήσεται Κύριος, καὶ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σὲ ὀφθήσεται.

ThomsonRaise thine eyes around and behold thy children gathered together; all thy sons are come from afar, and thy daughters shall be carried on shoulders.
BrentonLift up thine eyes round about, and behold thy children gathered: all thy sons have come from far, and thy daughters shall be borne on men's shoulders.

ThomsonThen thou wilt look and be filled with awe and astonished at heart; because the riches of the sea and of nations and peoples will pour in upon thee.
BrentonThen shalt thou see, and fear, and be amazed in thine heart; for the wealth of the sea shall come round to thee, and of nations and peoples; and herds of camels shall come to thee,

ThomsonAnd for thee will come herds of camels and those of Madiam and Gaipha will cover thee, and those of Saba will come bringing gold and will also bring frankincense, and with joy proclaim the salvation of the Lord.

ThomsonFor Me the islands waited, and among the first the ships of Tharsis to bring thy children from afar and their silver and their gold with them. And because of the holy name of the Lord, and because the Holy One of Israel is glorious;

Thomsontherefore strangers shall rebuild thy walls and their kings shall wait upon thee. For on account of My wrath I smote thee, but for mercy’s sake I have loved thee;
BrentonAnd strangers shall build thy walls, and their kings shall wait upon thee: for by reason of my wrath I smote thee, and by reason of mercy I loved thee.

Thomsonand thy gates shall be open continually (by day or by night they shall not be shut) to introduce to thee the wealth of nations and their kings pompously attended.
BrentonAnd thy gates shall be opened continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; to bring in to thee the power of the Gentiles, and their kings as captives.

ThomsonThe glory of Lebanon also shall come to thee, with the cypress and the pine and the cedar, to adorn the place which is dedicated to Me.

ThomsonAnd to thee shall come trembling the sons of them who afflicted and humbled thee, and thou shalt be called, City Sion of the Holy One of Israel.
BrentonAnd the sons of them that afflicted thee, and of them that provoked thee, shall come to thee in fear; and thou shalt be called Sion, the city of the Holy One of Israel.

ThomsonBecause of thy having been forsaken and hated when there was no helper, I will make thee an everlasting boast—a joy for perpetual generations.
BrentonBecause thou hast become desolate and hated, and there was no helper, therefore I will make thee a perpetual gladness, a joy of many generations.

ThomsonAnd thou shalt suck the milk of nations, and feed on the wealth of kings, and shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour, and that thy Redeemer is the God of Israel.
BrentonAnd thou shalt suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt eat the wealth of kings: and shalt know that I am the Lord that saves thee and delivers thee, the Holy One of Israel.
GreekΚαὶ θηλάσεις γάλα ἐθνῶν, καὶ πλοῦτον βασιλέων φάγεσαι, καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγὼ Κύριος ὁ σώζων σε, καὶ ἐξαιρούμενός σε Θεὸς Ἰσραήλ.

Thomsonand violence shall no more be heard in thy land, nor destruction nor misery in thy borders; but thy walls shall be called Salvation and thy gates, Sculpture.

ThomsonAnd thou shalt no more have the sun for a light by day nor shall the rising of the moon enlighten thy night; but the Lord will be to thee an everlasting light; and thy God will be thy glory.

ThomsonFor thy sun shall not go down nor shall thy moon ever wane: For the Lord will be to thee an everlasting light; and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
BrentonFor the sun shall no more set, nor shall the moon be eclipsed; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be completed.

ThomsonAnd thy people shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land forever, preserving the plant, the works of their hands, for glory.

ThomsonThe fewest in number shall become thousands, and he who is smallest, a great nation. I the Lord in due time will gather them.
