ThomsonASSUME courage, ye sons of Benjamin who are from the midst of Jerusalem, and give a signal with the trumpet at Thekoe; and on Bethacharma erect a standard. Because evils from the north are apparent and a great destruction is begun,

BrentonStrengthen yourselves, ye children of Benjamin, to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and sound an alarm with the trumpet in Thecue, and set up a signal over Bæthacharma: for evil threatens from the north, and a great destruction is coming.

GreekἘνισχύσατε υἱοὶ Βενιαμὶν ἐκ μέσου τῆς Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἐν Θεκουὲ σημάνατε σάλπιγγι, καὶ ὑπὲρ Βαιθαχαρμὰ ἄρατε σημεῖον, ὅτι κακὰ ἐκκέκυφεν ἀπὸ Βοῤῥᾶ, καὶ συντριβὴ μεγάλη γίνεται·

Thomsontherefore thy loftiness shall be destroyed. With regard to the daughter of Sion:

Thomsonshepherds shall come to her with their flocks, and pitch their tents around against her and feed. [They will say] each one to his band,

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord, Cut down her trees: discharge engines against Jerusalem: O lying city! in it all is oppression.

BrentonFor thus saith the Lord, Hew down her trees, array a numerous force against Jerusalem. O false city; there is all oppression in her.

ThomsonAs a reservoir sendeth forth water, so her wickedness gusheth out. Open wickedness and misery may be heard in her continually. With anguish and scourging

BrentonAs a cistern cools water, so her wickedness cools her, ungodliness and misery shall be heard in her, as continually before her.

Thomsonbe instructed, O Jerusalem! lest My soul be alienated from thee—lest I make thee an untrodden land, which shall not be inhabited.

BrentonThou shalt be chastened, O Jerusalem, with pain and the scourge, lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee a desert land, which shall not be inhabited.

Thomson(p) To whom shall I speak and give warning that he may hearken? behold their ears are uncircumcised and they cannot hear.—
(J) Behold the word of the Lord was to them an object of reproach and they would not [hear].

BrentonTo whom shall I speak, and testify, that he may hearken? behold, thine ears are uncircumcised, and they shall not be able to hear: behold, the word of the Lord is become to them a reproach, they will not at all desire it.

GreekΠρὸς τίνα λαλήσω, καὶ διαμαρτύρωμαι, καὶ εἰσακούσεται; ἰδοὺ ἀπερίτμητα τὰ ὦτα αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐ δυνήσονται ἀκούειν· ἰδοὺ τὸ ῥῆμα Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὐτοῖς εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν, οὐ μὴ βουληθῶσιν αὐτό.

ThomsonTherefore My wrath (which I filled up and restrained that I might not destroy them) I now pour out on infants in the streets, and on the congregation of youths at the same time. Because husband and wife shall be both taken—the elder with him who is full of days;

BrentonAnd I allowed my wrath to come to the full, yet I kept it in, and did not utterly destroy them: I will pour it out on the children without, and on the assembly of young men together: for man and woman shall be taken together, the old man with him that is full of days.

GreekΚαὶ τὸν θυμόν μου ἔπλησα, καὶ ἐπέσχον, καὶ οὐ συνετέλεσα αὐτούς· ἐκχεῶ ἐπὶ νήπια ἔξωθεν, καὶ ἐπὶ συναγωγὴν νεανίσκων ἅμα, ὅτι ἀνὴρ καὶ γυνὴ συλληφθήσονται, πρεσβύτερος μετὰ πλήρους ἡμερῶν.

Thomsontherefore their houses shall be transferred to others—their fields and their wives together. Because I will stretch forth My hand against the inhabitants of this land, saith the Lord—

BrentonAnd their houses shall be turned to others, with their fields and their wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of this land, saith the Lord.

Thomsonbecause from the least of them to the greatest, they have all committed unrighteous deeds; from the priest to the false prophet, they have all practised falsehoods,

Thomsonand healed the hurt of My people by underrating it and saying: Peace, Peace. But where is there peace?

BrentonAnd they healed the breach of my people imperfectly, making light of it, and saying, Peace, peace: and where is peace?

GreekΚαὶ ἰῶντο σύντριμμα τοῦ λαοῦ μου, ἐξουθενοῦντες καὶ λέγοντες, εἰρήνη εἰρήνη· καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν εἰρήνη;

ThomsonWere they ashamed because they failed? even in that case they were not ashamed; nor were they sensible of their infamy; therefore they shall fall in the common ruin; and in the time of visitation they shall perish, saith the Lord.

BrentonThey were ashamed because they failed; yet they were not ashamed as those who are truly ashamed, and they knew not their own disgrace: therefore shall they utterly fall when they do fall, and in the time of visitation shall they perish, said the Lord.

GreekΚατῃσχύνθησαν, ὅτι ἐξελίποσαν· καὶ οὐδʼ ὡς καταισχυνόμενοι κατῃσχύνθησαν, καὶ τὴν ἀτιμίαν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔγνωσαν· διατοῦτο πεσοῦνται ἐν τῇ πτώσει αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐν καιρῷ ἐπισκοπῆς ἀπολοῦνται, εἶπε Κύριος.

ThomsonThus saith the Lord, Stand in the highways and take a view and inquire for the ancient paths of the Lord, and see which is the good way and walk in it, and you shall find a purification for your souls: but they said, We will not go.

BrentonThus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths of the Lord; and see what is the good way, and walk in it, and ye shall find purification for your souls. But they said, We will not walk in them.

BrentonI have set watchmen over you, saying, Hear ye the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hear it.

GreekΚαθέστακα ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς σκοπούς· ἀκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς τῆς σάλπιγγος· καὶ εἶπαν, οὐκ ἀκουσόμεθα.

ThomsonTherefore the nations heard; even they who were tending their flocks.

BrentonTherefore have the nations heard, and they that feed their flocks.

GreekΔιὰ τοῦτο ἤκουσαν τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ οἱ ποιμαίνοντες τὰ ποίμνια αὐτῶν.

ThomsonHear, O earth, behold; upon this people I am bringing evils—the fruit of their apostasy, because they attended not to My words and rejected My law.

BrentonHear, O earth: behold, I will bring evils upon this people, even the fruit of their rebellions; for they have not heeded my words, and they have rejected my law.

GreekἌκουε γῆ, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπάγω ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον κακὰ, τὸν καρπὸν ἀποστροφῆς αὐτῶν, ὅτι τῶν λόγων μου οὐ προσέσχον, καὶ τὸν νόμον μου ἀπώσαντο.

ThomsonWhy do you bring Me incense from Saba, and cinnamon from a far distant country? Your whole burnt offerings are not acceptable; nor were your incense offerings sweet to Me.

BrentonWherefore do ye bring me frankincense from Saba, and cinnamon from a land afar off? your whole-burnt-offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices have not been pleasant to me.

GreekἹνατί μοι λίβανον ἐκ Σαβὰ φέρετε, καὶ κινάμωμον ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν; τὰ ὁλοκαυτώματα ὑμῶν οὐκ εἰσὶ δεκτὰ, καὶ αἱ θυσίαι ὑμῶν οὐχ ἥδυνάν μοι.

ThomsonTherefore, thus saith the Lord: Behold I send weakness on this people, and weak shall be fathers and sons with them; and neighbour with neighbour shall perish.

BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring weakness upon this people, and the fathers and sons shall be weak together; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.

GreekΔιατοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ δίδωμι ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον ἀσθένειαν, καὶ ἀσθενήσουσι πατέρες καὶ υἱοὶ ἅμα, γείτων καὶ ὁ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ἀπολοῦνται.

ThomsonThus saith the Lord, Behold a people is coming from the north; and nations shall be roused from the extremity of the earth;

BrentonThus saith the Lord, Behold, a people comes from the north, and nations shall be stirred up from the end of the earth.

GreekΤάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἰδοὺ λαὸς ἔρχεται ἀπὸ Βοῤῥᾶ, καὶ ἔθνη ἐξεγερθήσονται ἀπʼ ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς.

Thomsonthey will grasp the bow and the spear: they are haughty and will show no mercy; their voice is like the roaring sea; on horses and in chariots they will draw up in array like fire, for battle against thee, O daughter of Sion.

BrentonThey shall lay hold on bow and spear; the people is fierce, and will have no mercy; their voice is as the roaring sea; they shall array themselves for war against thee as fire on horses and chariots, O daughter of Sion.

GreekΤόξον καὶ ζιβύνην κρατήσουσιν· ἰταμός ἐστι, καὶ οὐκ ἐλεήσει· φωνὴ αὐτοῦ, ὡς θάλασσα κυμαίνουσα· ἐφʼ ἵπποις καὶ ἅρμασι παρατάξεται ὡς πῦρ εἰς πόλεμον πρὸς σὲ, θύγατερ Σιών.

Thomson(c) We have heard the fame of them. Our hands are enfeebled. Anguish hath taken hold of us—pangs, as of a woman in travail.

BrentonWe have heard the report of them: our hands are weakened: anguish has seized us, the pangs as of a woman in travail.

GreekἨκούσαμεν τὴν ἀκοὴν αὐτῶν, παρελύθησαν αἱ χεῖρες ἡμῶν, θλίψις κατέσχεν ἡμᾶς, ὠδῖνες ὡς τικτούσης.

Thomson(p) Go not out to the fields and in the highways walk not, because the sword of the enemy dwelleth all around.

BrentonGo not forth into the field, and walk not in the ways; for the sword of the enemy lingers round about.

GreekΜὴ ἐκπορεύεσθε εἰς ἀγρὸν, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς μὴ βαδίζετε, ὅτι ῥομφαία τῶν ἐχθρῶν παροικεῖ κυκλόθεν.

ThomsonO with ashes: utter for thyself piteous lamentation like the mourning for a beloved. For misery will suddenly come upon thee.

BrentonO daughter of my people, gird thyself with sackcloth: sprinkle thyself with ashes; make for thyself pitiable lamentation, as the mourning for a beloved son: for misery will come suddenly upon you.

GreekΘύγατερ λαοῦ μου περίζωσαι σάκκον, κατάπασσε ἐν σποδῷ, πένθος ἀγαπητοῦ ποιήσαι σεαυτῇ κοπετὸν οἰκτρὸν, ὅτι ἐξαίφνης ἥξει ταλαιπωρία ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς.

Thomson(J) I have made thee an assayer for trying peoples: and thou shalt know Me when I try their ways.

BrentonI have caused thee to be tried among tried nations, and thou shalt know me when I have tried their way.

ThomsonThe bellows could not stand the fire: the lead is consumed. In vain doth the silversmith try to extract silver. Their wickedness was not to be melted. You shall call them rejected silver, for the Lord hath rejected them.

BrentonThe bellows have failed from the fire, the lead has failed: the silversmith works at his trade in vain; their wickedness is not consumed.

GreekἘξέλιπε φυσητὴρ ἀπὸ πυρὸς, ἐξέλιπε μόλιβος· εἰς κενὸν ἀργυροκόπος ἀργυροκοπεῖ, πονηρία αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐτάκη.
