ThomsonTHEN the Lord said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be dismayed. Take with thee all the men who are warriors, and arise, and go up to Gai. Behold I have delivered into thy hands, the king of Gai, and his land;
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be timorous: take with thee all the men of war, and arise, go up to Gai; behold, I have given into thy hands the king of Gai, and his land.

Thomsonand thou shalt treat Gai, as thou hast treated Jericho, and its king; but the plunder of the cattle thou shalt take for thyself. Lay thee an ambush for the city, behind it.
BrentonAnd thou shalt do to Gai, as thou didst to Jericho and its king; and thou shalt take to thyself the spoil of its cattle; set now for thyself an ambush for the city behind.

ThomsonSo Joshua arose, and all the warriors, to go up against Gai. And Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night;

Thomsonand he gave them orders, saying, Lie in ambush behind the city; be not at a great distance from the city, and be all ready;
BrentonAnd he charged them, saying, Do ye lie in ambush behind the city: do not go far from the city, and ye shall all be ready.

Thomsonand I, and all the people who are with me, will advance to the city, and when the inhabitants of Gai come out to meet us, as before, we will flee from before them;
BrentonAnd I and all with me will draw near to the city: and it shall come to pass when the inhabitants of Gai shall come forth to meet us, as before, that we will flee from before them.

Thomsonand as they come after us we will draw them off from the city; for they will say, They are fleeing from us, as they did before.
BrentonAnd when they shall come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, These men flee from before us, as also before.

ThomsonThen you will rise from the ambush, and rush into the city.
BrentonAnd ye shall rise up out of the ambuscade, and go into the city.
GreekὙμεῖς δὲ ἐξαναστήσεσθε ἐκ τῆς ἐνέδρας, καὶ πορεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν.

ThomsonAct agreeably to these orders; behold I have commanded you.
BrentonYe shall do according to this word, lo! I have commanded you.

ThomsonSo Joshua despatched them, and they went to lie in ambush, and took their station, between Baithel and Gai, on the west of Gai.
BrentonAnd Joshua sent them, and they went to lie in ambush; and they lay between Bæthel and Gai, westward of Gai.

ThomsonAnd Joshua arose early next morning and reviewed the people,

Thomsonand he and the elders went up before the people to Gai.
BrentonAnd all the men of war went up with him, and they went forward and came over against the city eastward.

ThomsonAll the warriors went up with him, and marching on, came before the city,

ThomsonAnd when the king of Gai saw them, he hastened, and went out to meet them, straight to battle, he and all his people with him; for he did not know that there was an ambush behind the city.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the king of Gai saw it, he hasted and went out to meet them direct to the battle, he and all the people that were with him: and he knew not that there was an ambuscade formed against him behind the city.

Thomsonand they pursued the Israelites, and were drawn off from the city.
BrentonAnd they pursued after the children of Israel, and they themselves went to a distance from the city.

ThomsonThere was not a man left in Gai, who did not pursue Israel. Nay they left the city open, and pursued Israel.

ThomsonThen the Lord said to Joshua, Stretch forth thy hand, with the spear in thy hand, towards the city; for into thy hands I have delivered it, and the men in ambush will rise quickly from their place. So Joshua stretched forth his hand, with the spear towards the city;
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Joshua, Stretch forth thy hand with the spear that is in thy hand toward the city, for I have delivered it into thy hands; and the liers in wait shall rise up quickly out of their place.

Thomsonand the men in ambush immediately arose from their place. They started up at the instant he stretched forth his hand, and rushed into the city; and having taken it, they hastened and set it on fire.
BrentonAnd Joshua stretched out his hand and his spear toward the city, and the ambuscade rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and burnt the city with fire.

ThomsonAnd when the inhabitants of Gai looked back, they saw a smoke rising from the city, up to heaven, and had no where to flee, this way or that.
BrentonAnd when the inhabitants of Gai looked round behind them, then they saw the smoke going up out of the city to heaven, and they were no longer able to flee this way or that way.

Thomsonand the others issued out of the city to meet them, so that they were in the midst of the army, some being on one side, and some on the other; and they smote them until there was not one left alive, nor any who escaped.

Thomsonand when the Israelites had made an end of slaying all that were in Gai, and all that were in the plains, and on the mountain, at the steep, from which at the last they had driven them, Joshua returned to Gai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
BrentonAnd when the children of Israel had ceased slaying all that were in Gai, and in the fields, and in the mountain on the descent, from whence they pursued them even to the end, then Joshua returned to Gai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

ThomsonNow they who fell on that day, including men and women, even all the inhabitants of Gai, were twelve thousand.

ThomsonAnd he hanged the king of Gai on a gibbet; and he continued on the gibbet till the evening. But, at the setting of the sun, Joshua gave orders, and they took down his body from the gibbet, and threw it into a pit; and raised over it a heap of stones, which remaineth to this day.
