ThomsonWHEN the kings of the Amorites, who dwelt on the border of the Jordan, and those in the hilly country, and those in the plain, and those along the coast of the great sea, and those bordering on Lebanon, namely the Chettites, and the Chananites, and the Pherezites, and the Evites, and the Amorites, and the Gergasites, and the Jebusites, heard of these things,
BrentonAnd when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Antilibanus, and the Chettites, and the Chananites, and the Pherezites, and the Evites, and the Amorites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites, heard of it,
2
Thomsonthey assembled together to attack Joshua and Israel, all at the same time.
Brentonthey came all together at the same time to make war against Joshua and Israel.
2a
Thomson—
BrentonThen Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel in mount Gæbal,
2b
Thomson—
Brentonas Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, on which iron had not been lifted up; and he offered there whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, and a peace-offering.
2c
Thomson—
BrentonAnd Joshua wrote upon the stones a copy of the law, even the law of Moses, before the children of Israel.
2d
Thomson—
BrentonAnd all Israel, and their elders, and their judges, and their scribes, passed on one side and on the other before the ark; and the priests and the Levites took up the ark of the covenant of the Lord; and the stranger and the native were there, who were half of them near mount Garizin, and half near mount Gæbal, as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded at first, to bless the people.
2e
Thomson—
BrentonAnd afterwards Joshua read accordingly all the words of this law, the blessings and the curses, according to all things written in the law of Moses.
2f
Thomson—
BrentonThere was not a word of all that Moses charged Joshua, which Joshua read not in the ears of all the assembly of the children of Israel, the men, and the women, and the children, and the strangers that joined themselves to Israel.
3
ThomsonNow when the inhabitants of Gabaon heard all that the Lord had done to Jericho, and Gai, they acted with subtilty.
BrentonAnd the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.
4
ThomsonThey went and furnished themselves with provisions, and made other suitable preparations, and taking old bags on their shoulders, and old skins of wine which were cracked, and bound up,
BrentonAnd they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine,
5
Thomsonand shoes for their feet, the under part of which were hollow, and the upper part old and clouted, and the garments they put on being worn out, and the bread for their journey dry, mouldy, and worm eaten,
Brentonand the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments old upon them—and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt.
6
Thomsonthey came to Joshua, to the camp of Israel, at Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far distant land, now therefore make a covenant with us.
BrentonAnd they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel to Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us.
7
ThomsonAnd the children of Israel said to the Chorrite, Perhaps thou dwellest near me; how then can I make a covenant with thee?
BrentonAnd the children of Israel said to the Chorrhæan, Peradventure thou dwellest amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with thee?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς τὸν Χοῤῥαῖον, ὅρα μὴ ἐν ἐμοὶ κατοικεῖς· καὶ πῶς σοι διαθῶμαι διαθήκην;
8
ThomsonThereupon they said to Joshua, We are thy servants.
And Joshua said to them, Whence are you? And whence come you?
And Joshua said to them, Whence are you? And whence come you?
BrentonAnd they said to Joshua, We are thy servants: and Joshua said to them, Whence are ye, and whence have ye come?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν, οἰκεται σου ἐσμέν· καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς, πόθεν ἐστὲ, καὶ πόθεν παραγεγόνατε;
9
ThomsonAnd they said, Thy servants are come from a very far distant country, because of the name of the Lord thy God; for we have heard of His name, and of all that He hath done in Egypt,
BrentonAnd they said, Thy servants are come from a very far country in the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard his name, and all that he did in Egypt,
10
Thomsonand what He hath done to the kings of the Amorites, who were on the border of the Jordan, to Seon king of the Amorites, and to Og, the king of Basan, who dwelt at Asteroth and Edrain.
Brentonand all that he did to the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan, to Seon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Basan, who dwelt in Astaroth and in Edrain.
11
ThomsonAt the news of which, our elders and all the inhabitants of our land spoke to us saying, Take for yourselves provisions for the journey, and go and meet them, and say to them, We are thy servants; make a covenant with us.
BrentonAnd our elders and all that inhabit our land when they heard spoke to us, saying, Take to yourselves provision for the way, and go to meet them; and ye shall say to them, We are thy servants, and now make a covenant with us.
12
ThomsonThese loaves we took hot for our journey, on the day we set out to come to you; but now they are dry, and become mouldy;
BrentonThese are the loaves—we took them hot for our journey on the day on which we came out to come to you; and now they are dried and become mouldy.
13
Thomsonthese skins of wine were filled new; but they are cracked; and these our garments, and our shoes, are worn out with the length of the journey.
BrentonAnd these are the skins of wine which we filled when new, and they are rent; and our garments and our shoes are worn out because of the very long journey.
14
ThomsonThen the rulers took some of their provisions, and did not consult the Lord.
BrentonAnd the chiefs took of their provision, and asked not counsel of the Lord.
15
ThomsonAnd Joshua made peace with them, and they entered into a covenant with them to save their lives; and the chiefs of the congregation swore to them.
BrentonAnd Joshua made peace with them, and they made a covenant with them to preserve them; and the princes of the congregation sware to them.
16
ThomsonBut three days after they had entered into covenant with them, they heard that they were in the neighbourhood, and dwelt close by them.
BrentonAnd it came to pass three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were near neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
17
ThomsonWhereupon the children of Israel removed, and came to their cities. Now their cities were Gabaon, and Kephira, and Berot, and the cities of Jarim;
BrentonAnd the children of Israel departed and came to their cities; and their cities were Gabaon, and Kephira, and Berot, and the cities of Jarin.
18
ThomsonBut the children of Israel did not make war on them, because all the chiefs had sworn to them by the Lord the God of Israel.
BrentonAnd the children of Israel fought not with them, because all the princes sware to them by the Lord God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured at the princes.
19
ThomsonWhen all the congregation murmured at the chiefs, the chiefs said to all the congregation, We have sworn to them by the Lord the God of Israel; now therefore we cannot touch them.
BrentonAnd the princes said to all the congregation: We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel, and now we shall not be able to touch them.
20
ThomsonThis we will do. We will let them live and protect them; that there may be no wrath against us because of the oath which we have sworn to them.
BrentonThis we will do; take them alive, and we will preserve them: so there shall not be wrath against us by reason of the oath which we swore to them.
21
ThomsonThey shall live; but they shall be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the chiefs have said to them.
BrentonThey shall live, and shall be hewers of wood and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the princes said to them.
22
ThomsonFor Joshua had called them, and said to them, Why did you impose upon me saying, We are far distant from thee, seeing you are our nearest neighbour?
BrentonAnd Joshua called them together and said to them, Why have ye deceived me, saying, We live very far from you; whereas ye are fellow-countrymen of those who dwell among us?
GreekΚαὶ συνεκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, διατί παρελογίσασθέ με, λέγοντες, μακρὰν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐσμὲν σφόδρα· ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐγχώριοί ἐστε τῶν κατοικούντων ἐν ἡμῖν;
23
ThomsonNow therefore you are cursed, and not one of you shall escape servitude—from being a hewer of wood, and a drawer of water, for me and my God.
BrentonAnd now ye are cursed: there shall not fail of you a slave, or a hewer of wood, or a drawer of water to me and my God.
24
ThomsonAnd they answered Joshua saying, We were told all that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses, to give you this land, and to extirpate us, and all the inhabitants thereof from before you, therefore we were in great terror for our lives because of you, and we did this.
BrentonAnd they answered Joshua, saying, It was reported to us what the Lord thy God charged his servant Moses, to give you this land, and to destroy us and all that dwelt on it from before you; and we feared very much for our lives because of you, and therefore we did this thing.
25
ThomsonAnd now behold we are in your power, deal with us as you please, and as it seemeth good to you.
BrentonAnd now, behold, we are in your power; do to us as it is pleasing to you, and as it seems good to you.
26
ThomsonSo they dealt with them in this manner, and Joshua saved them that day out of the hand of the Israelites, and they did not destroy them. And on that day Joshua made them hewers of wood, and drawers of water, for the whole congregation, and for the altar of God. For this cause the inhabitants of Gabaon are hewers of wood, and drawers of water, for the altar of God, even at this day, and are to be so for the place which the Lord will choose.
BrentonAnd they did so to them; and Joshua rescued them in that day out of the hands of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.
27
Thomson—
BrentonAnd Joshua made them in that day hewers of wood and drawers of water to the whole congregation, and for the altar of God: therefore the inhabitants of Gabaon became hewers of wood and drawers of water for the altar of God until this day, even for the place which the Lord should choose.
