1
ThomsonSO there went up a messenger of the Lord from Galgal to Wailing, namely to Baithel, to the house of Israel, and said to them, Thus saith the Lord: I caused you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you into this land which I solemnly promised your fathers, and I said I will never break My covenant with you;
BrentonAnd an angel of the Lord went up from Galgal to the place of weeping, and to Bæthel, and to the house of Israel, and said to them, Thus says the Lord, I brought you up out of Egypt, and I brought you into the land which I sware to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant that I have made with you.
2
Thomsontherefore you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land, nor worship their gods; but you shall break to pieces their graven images, and demolish their altars. But you have not hearkened to My voice. Because you have done these things,
BrentonAnd ye shall make no covenant with them that dwell in this land, neither shall ye worship their gods; but ye shall destroy their graven images, ye shall pull down their altars: but ye hearkened not to my voice, for ye did these things.
3
Thomsontherefore I have said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be curbs for you; and their gods shall be to you a stumbling block.
BrentonAnd I said, I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be for a distress to you, and their gods shall be to you for an offence.
4
ThomsonAnd when the messenger of the Lord had spoken these words to all the children of Israel, the people wept aloud.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5
ThomsonSo they called the name of that place, Wailing, and there they sacrificed to the Lord.
BrentonAnd they named the name of that place Weepings; and they sacrificed there to the Lord.
6
ThomsonNow when Joshua had dismissed the people, and every man had gone to his inheritance to take possession of the land,
BrentonAnd Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his inheritance, to inherit the land.
7
Thomsonthough the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who had lived long with Joshua, and who knew all the great works which the Lord had done for Israel;
BrentonAnd the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived many days with Joshua, as many as knew all the great work of the Lord, what things he had wrought in Israel.
8
Thomsonyet when Joshua, son of Naue, the servant of the Lord, died, at the age of a hundred and ten years,
BrentonAnd Joshua the son of Naue, the servant of the Lord, died, a hundred and ten years old.
9
Thomsonand they had buried him in the border of his inheritance at Thamnathares, on mount Ephraim, on the north side of mount Gaas;
BrentonAnd they buried him in the border of his inheritance, in Thamnathares, in mount Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaas.
10
Thomsonand all that generation was gathered to their fathers, and another generation arose after them, who knew not the Lord, nor the works which He had done for Israel,
BrentonAnd all that generation were laid to their fathers: and another generation rose up after them, who knew not the Lord, nor yet the work which he wrought in Israel.
11
Thomsonthe children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baalims.
BrentonAnd the children of Israel wrought evil before the Lord, and served Baalim.
12
ThomsonThey forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and went after other gods, after some of the gods of the nations around, and worshipped them, and provoked the Lord to wrath.
BrentonAnd they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and walked after other gods, of the gods of the nations round about them; and they worshipped them.
13
ThomsonSo when they forsook Him, and served Baal, and the Astartes,
BrentonAnd they provoked the Lord, and forsook him, and served Baal and the Astartes.
14
Thomsonthe anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of spoilers, who spoiled them, and sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.
BrentonAnd the Lord was very angry with Israel; and he gave them into the hands of the spoilers, and they spoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, and they could not any longer resist their enemies,
15
ThomsonWherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken, and as the Lord had solemnly denounced to them. But when He had afflicted them grievously,
Brentonamong whomsoever they went; and the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord spoke, and as the Lord sware to them; and he greatly afflicted them.
16
Thomsonthe Lord raised up Judges, and the Lord saved them out of the hands of those who spoiled them.
BrentonAnd the Lord raised up judges, and the Lord saved them out of the hands of them that spoiled them: and yet they hearkened not to the judges,
17
ThomsonWhen they indeed hearkened not to the judges, because they went a-whoring after other gods, and worshipped them, and turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers had walked—did not act in obedience to the commands of the Lord;
Brentonfor they went a whoring after other gods, and worshipped them; and they turned quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked to hearken to the words of the Lord; they did not so.
18
Thomsonstill because the Lord raised up judges for them, therefore the Lord was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge, because the Lord was mollified by their groaning, by reason of them who oppressed them and afflicted them.
BrentonAnd because the Lord raised them up judges, so the Lord was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved at their groaning by reason of them that besieged them and afflicted them.
19
ThomsonBut when the judge died, and they returned and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, by going after other gods to serve them, and worship them, and would not quit their devices, nor their perverse ways,
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the judge died, that they went back, and again corrupted themselves worse than their fathers to go after other gods to serve them and to worship them: they abandoned not their devices nor their stubborn ways.
20
Thomsonthen was the anger of the Lord kindled against Israel, and he said, Because this nation have forsaken My covenant, which I gave in charge to their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice,
BrentonAnd the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Forasmuch as this nation has forsaken my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not hearkened to my voice,
21
Thomsontherefore I will not henceforth drive out from before them a man of those nations which Joshua, son of Nave, left in the land.
Brentontherefore I will not any more cast out a man of the nations from before their face, which Joshua the son of Naue left in the land. And the Lord left them,
22
ThomsonHe indeed had spared them, that by them He might prove Israel whether they would, or would not, keep the ways of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers had kept them; and having determined to spare those nations so as not to root them out speedily, the Lord did not deliver them into the hands of Joshua.
Brentonto prove Israel with them, whether they would keep the way of the Lord, to walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or no.
23
Thomson
BrentonSo the Lord will leave these nations, so as not to cast them out suddenly; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua.
