ThomsonTHE Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

ThomsonSpeak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them: When you are come into the land which I give you, the land which I give you must rest sabbaths for the Lord.

BrentonSpeak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Whensoever ye shall have entered into the land, which I give to you, then the land shall rest which I give to you, for its sabbaths to the Lord.

ThomsonBut in the seventh year there shall be sabbaths—there shall be a rest for the land—sabbaths for the Lord.

BrentonBut in the seventh year shall be a sabbath, it shall be a rest to the land, a sabbath to the Lord: thou shalt not sow thy field, and thou shalt not prune thy vine.

ThomsonThou shalt neither sow thy field nor prune thy vineyard, nor reap the spontaneous productions of thy field, nor gather the grapes of thy dedication. It shall be a year of rest for the land.

Thomsonand for thy cattle, and the wild beasts in thy land, shall the whole product thereof be for food.

BrentonAnd for thy cattle, and for the wild beasts that are in thy land, shall every fruit of it be for food.

Thomsonand dedicate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty in the land, to all the inhabitants thereof. And this shall be a year of rest, a Jubilee for you; and every one shall return to his possession, and every one shall go to his family.

BrentonAnd ye shall sanctify the year, the fiftieth year, and ye shall proclaim a release upon the land to all that inhabit it; it shall be given a year of release, a jubilee for you; and each one shall depart to his possession, and ye shall go each to his family.

ThomsonThis jubilee, this fiftieth year, shall be for you a general release, you shall not sow, nor shall you reap the spontaneous productions thereof, nor gather the vintage which is dedicated.

BrentonThis is a jubilee of release, the year shall be to you the fiftieth year: ye shall not sow, nor reap the produce that comes of itself from the land, neither shall ye gather its dedicated fruits.

ThomsonIn this year of release, proclaimed by the sound of trumpets, every one shall return to his possession.

BrentonIn the year of the release even the jubilee of it, shall each one return to his possession.

ThomsonWhether therefore thou sellest to thy neighbour, or purchasest of thy neighbour, let no man take advantage of his neighbour.

BrentonAnd if thou shouldest sell a possession to thy neighbour, or if thou shouldest buy of thy neighbour, let not a man oppress his neighbour.

GreekἘὰν δὲ ἀποδῷ πράσιν τῷ πλησίον σου, ἐὰν δὲ καὶ κτήσῃ παρὰ τοῦ πλησίον σου, μὴ θλιβέτω ἄνθρωπος τὸν πλησίον.

ThomsonAccording to the number of years after the jubilee, thou shalt purchase of thy neighbour; and according to the number of years of crops, he shall sell to thee.

BrentonAccording to the number of years after the jubilee shalt thou buy of thy neighbour, according to the number of years of the fruits shall he sell to thee.

GreekΚατὰ ἀριθμὸν ἐτῶν μετὰ τὴν σημασίαν κτήσῃ παρὰ τοῦ πλησίον, κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ἐνιαυτῶν γεννημάτων ἀποδώσεταί σοι.

ThomsonIn proportion to the greater number of years, thou shalt rate his possession higher, and according to the fewness of the years, thou shalt rate it lower. For according to the number of crops, so shall he sell to thee.

BrentonAccording as there may be a greater number of years he shall increase the value of his possession, and according as there may be a less number of years he shall lessen the value of his possession; for according to the number of his crops, so shall he sell to thee.

GreekΚαθότι ἂν πλεῖον τῶν ἐτῶν πληθυνεῖ τὴν ἔγκτησιν αὐτοῦ, καὶ καθότι ἂν ἔλαττον τῶν ἐτῶν ἐλαττονώσει τὴν ἔγκτησιν αὐτοῦ· ὅτι ἀριθμὸν γεννημάτων αὐτοῦ, οὕτως ἀποδώσεταί σοι.

ThomsonLet no man take advantage of his neighbour. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God.

BrentonLet not a man oppress his neighbour, and thou shalt fear the Lord thy God: I am the Lord thy God.

GreekΜὴ θλιβέτω ἄνθρωπος τὸν πλησίον· καὶ φοβηθήσῃ Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου· ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὑμῶν.

ThomsonI am the Lord your God, therefore you shall practise all my rules of rectitude, and all my judgments, and keep and do them; so shall you dwell securely in the land,

BrentonAnd ye shall keep all my ordinances, and all my judgments; and do ye observe them, and ye shall keep them, and dwell securely in the land.

GreekΚαὶ ποιήσετε πάντα τὰ δικαιώματά μου, καὶ πάσας τὰς κρίσεις μου, καὶ φυλάξασθε, καὶ ποιήσετε αὐτὰ, καὶ κατοικήσετε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς πεποιθότες.

Thomsonand the land shall yield its productions; and you shall eat plentifully, and dwell securely therein.

BrentonAnd the land shall yield her increase, and ye shall eat to fulness, and shall dwell securely in it.

GreekΚαὶ δώσει ἡ γῆ τὰ ἐκφόρια αὐτῆς, καὶ φάγεσθε εἰς πλησμονὴν, καὶ κατοικήσετε πεποιθότες ἐπʼ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonNow if you should say, What shall we eat in this seventh year, if we neither sow nor gather our produce?

BrentonAnd if ye should say, What shall we eat in this seventh year, if we do not sow nor gather in our fruits?

GreekἘὰν δὲ λέγητε, τί φαγόμεθα ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ ἑβδόμῳ τούτῳ, ἐὰν μὴ σπείρωμεν μηδὲ συναγάγωμεν τὰ γεννήματα ἡμῶν;

ThomsonI indeed will send my blessing for you, in the sixth year, and it will make the products thereof sufficient for the three years.

BrentonThen will I send my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and the land shall produce its fruits for three years.

GreekΚαὶ ἀποστέλλω τὴν εὐλογίαν μου ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ ἕκτῳ, καὶ ποιήσει τὰ γεννήματα αὐτῆς εἰς τὰ τρία ἔτη.

ThomsonThough you are to sow in the eighth year, yet on account of the produce, you shall eat the old, even to the ninth year, even till the products of that come in, you shall eat of the old store.

BrentonAnd ye shall sow in the eighth year, and eat old fruits till the ninth year: until its fruit come, ye shall eat old fruits of the old.

GreekΚαὶ σπερεῖτε τὸ ἔτος τὸ ὄγδοον, καὶ φάγεσθε ἀπὸ τῶν γεννημάτων παλαιὰ ἕως τοῦ ἔτους τοῦ ἐνάτου· ἕως ἂν ἔλθῃ τὸ γέννημα αὐτῆς, φάγεσθε παλαιὰ παλαιῶν.

ThomsonNow the land must not be sold forever; for the land is mine. Because you are strangers, and sojourners before me,

BrentonAnd the land shall not be sold for a permanence; for the land is mine, because ye are strangers and sojourners before me.

GreekΚαὶ ἡ γῆ οὐ πραθήσεται εἰς βεβαίωσιν· ἐμὴ γάρ ἐστιν ἡ γῆ, διότι προσήλυτοι καὶ πάροικοι ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐναντίον μου.

Thomsontherefore in all the land of your possession, you shall grant a right of redeeming the land.

BrentonAnd in every land of your possession, ye shall allow ransoms for the land.

GreekΚαὶ κατὰ πᾶσαν γῆν κατασχέσεως ὑμῶν, λύτρα δώσετε τῆς γῆς.

ThomsonAnd if thy brother who is with thee become poor, and sell any part of his possession; when he who is next of kin to him cometh, he shall redeem what his brother hath sold.

BrentonAnd if thy brother who is with thee be poor, and should have sold part of his possession, and his kinsman who is nigh to him come, then he shall redeem the possession which his brother has sold.

GreekἘὰν δὲ πένηται ὁ ἀδελφός σου ὁ μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ἀποδῶται ἀπὸ τῆς κατασχέσεως αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλθῃ ὁ ἀγχιστεύων ὁ ἐγγίζων αὐτῷ, καὶ λυτρώσεται τὴν πρᾶσιν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd if any person hath none to redeem, and his own hand hath attained, and found a sufficiency, he shall have the right of redemption.

BrentonAnd if one have no near kinsman, and he prosper with his hand, and he find sufficient money, even his ransom;

GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ ᾖ τινι ὁ ἀγχιστεύων, καὶ εὐπορηθῇ τῇ χειρὶ, καὶ εὑρεθῇ αὐτῷ τὸ ἱκανὸν, λύτρα αὐτοῦ·

ThomsonAnd he shall compute the years of his sale, and pay back what is still due to the man to whom he sold it. So shall he return to his possession.

Brentonthen shall he calculate the years of his sale, and he shall give what is due to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his possession.

Greekκαὶ συλλογιεῖται τὰ ἔτη τῆς πράσεως αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀποδώσει ὅ ὑπερέχει τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ, ᾧ ἀπέδοτο αὐτὸ αὐτῷ, καὶ ἀπελεύσεται εἰς τὴν κατάσχεσιν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonBut if his hand cannot attain a sufficiency to repay him, the sale shall be good to him who purchased, until the last sixth year of the jubilee, and in the jubilee, he shall quit, and the seller shall return to his possession.

BrentonBut if his hand have not prospered sufficiently, so as that he should restore the money to him, then he that bought the possessions shall have them till the sixth year of the release; and it shall go out in the release, and the owner shall return to his possession.

GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ εὑπορηθῇ αὐτοῦ ἡ χεὶρ τὸ ἱκανὸν, ὥστε ἀποδοῦναι αὐτῷ, καὶ ἔσται ἡ πράσις τῷ κτησαμένῳ αὐτὰ ἕως τοῦ ἕκτου ἔτους τῆς ἀφέσεως, καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐν τῇ ἀφέσει, καὶ ἀπελεύσεται εἰς τὴν κατάσχεσιν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd if any person sell a dwelling house in a walled city, he shall have the right of redeeming it till the term expire. The term for redemption shall be a year.

BrentonAnd if any one should sell an inhabited house in a walled city, then there shall be the ransom of it, until the time is fulfilled: its time of ransom shall be a full year.

GreekἘὰν δέ τις ἀποδῶται οἰκίαν οἰκητὴν ἐν πόλει τετειχισμένῃ, καὶ ἔσται ἡ λύτρωσις αὐτῆς, ἕως πληρωθῇ· ἐνιαυτὸς ἡμερῶν ἔσται ἡ λύτρωσις αὐτῆς.

ThomsonAnd if it be not redeemed till the whole year expire, the house which is in a walled city, shall be confirmed for ever to the purchaser. And he shall not go out in the jubilee.

BrentonAnd if it be not ransomed until there be completed of its time a full year, the house which is in the walled city shall be surely confirmed to him that bought it, throughout his generations; and it shall not go out in the release.

GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ λυτρωθῇ ἕως ἂν πληρωθῇ αὐτῆς ἐνιαυτὸς ὅλος, κυρωθήσεται ἡ οἰκία ἡ οὖσα ἐν πόλει τῇ ἐχούσῃ τεῖχος, βεβαίως τῷ κτησαμένῳ αὐτὴν εἰς τὰς γενεὰς αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξελεύσεται ἐν τῇ ἀφέσει.

ThomsonBut the houses which are in villages, unsurrounded with walls, shall be accounted as the fields in the country, and shall be always subject to redemption, and go out in the jubilee.

BrentonBut the houses in the villages which have not a wall round about them, shall be reckoned as the fields of the country: they shall always be redeemable, and they shall go out in the release.

GreekΑἱ δὲ οἰκίαι αἱ ἐν ἐπαύλεσιν, αἷς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐταῖς τεῖχος κύκλῳ, πρὸς τὸν ἀγρὸν τῆς γῆς λογισθήσονται· λυτρωταὶ διαπαντὸς ἔσονται, καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀφέσει ἐξελεύσονται.

ThomsonAnd the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities of their possession, shall always be redeemable by the Levites;

BrentonAnd the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities in their possession, shall be always redeemable to the Levites.

GreekΚαὶ αἱ πόλεις τῶν Λευιτῶν, οἰκίαι τῶν πόλεων κατασχέσεως αὐτῶν, λυτρωταὶ διαπαντὸς ἔσονται τοῖς Λευίταις.

Thomsonand whoever among the Levites shall redeem, the intermediate purchase of the houses of the city of their possession shall terminate in the jubilee. For the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.

BrentonAnd if any one shall redeem a house of the Levites, then shall their sale of the houses of their possession go out in the release; because the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession in the midst of the children of Israel.

GreekΚαὶ ὃς ἂν λυτρώσηται παρὰ τῶν Λευιτῶν, καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἡ διάπρασις αὐτῶν οἰκιῶν πόλεως κατασχέσεως αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ἀφέσει, ὅτι οἰκίαι τῶν πόλεων τῶν Λευιτῶν κατάσχεσις αὐτῶν ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonAnd the fields set apart for their cities shall not be sold; for this is their perpetual possession.

BrentonAnd the lands set apart for their cities shall not be sold, because this is their perpetual possession.

GreekΚαὶ οἱ ἀγροὶ ἀφωρισμένοι ταῖς πόλεσιν αὐτῶν οὐ πραθήσονται, ὅτι κατάσχεσις αἰωνία τοῦτο αὐτῶν ἐστον.

ThomsonAnd if thy brother who is with thee become poor and distressed in his circumstances when near thee, thou shalt help him, as a proselyte or a sojourner, and thy brother shall live with thee.

BrentonAnd if thy brother who is with thee become poor, and he fail in resources with thee, thou shalt help him as a stranger and a sojourner, and thy brother shall live with thee.

GreekἘὰν δὲ πένηται ὁ ἀδελφός σοῦ ὁ μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ἀδυνατήσῃ ταῖς χερσὶ παρὰ σοὺ, ἀντιλήψῃ αὐτοῦ ὡς προσηλύτου καὶ παροίκου, καὶ ζήσεται ὁ ἀδελφός σου μετὰ σοῦ.

ThomsonThou shalt not take from him usury or increase, but thou shalt fear thy God, I, the Lord; and thy brother shall live with thee.

BrentonThou shalt not receive from him interest, nor increase: and thou shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord: and thy brother shall live with thee.

GreekΟὐ λήψῃ παρʼ αὐτοῦ τόκον, οὐδὲ ἐπὶ πλήθει· καὶ φοβηθήσῃ τὸν Θεόν σου· ἐγὼ Κύριος· καὶ ζήσεται ὁ ἀδελφός σου μετὰ σοῦ.

ThomsonThou shalt not lend him thy money on usury, nor give him thy victuals for an increase.

BrentonThou shalt not lend thy money to him at interest, and thou shalt not lend thy meat to him to be returned with increase.

GreekΤὸ ἀργύριόν σου οὐ δώσεις αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὸκῳ, καὶ ἐπὶ πλεονασμῷ οὐ δώσεις αὐτῷ τὰ βρώματά σου.

ThomsonI am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Chanaan, and to be your God.

BrentonI am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Chanaan, so as to be your God.

GreekἘγὼ Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὑμῶν, ὁ ἐξαγαγὼν ὑμᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν γῆν Χαναὰν, ὥστε εἶναι ὑμῶν Θεός.

ThomsonAnd if thy brother who dwelleth by thee be humbled, and sold to thee, he shall not serve thee as a slave.

BrentonAnd if thy brother by thee be lowered, and be sold to thee, he shall not serve thee with the servitude of a slave.

GreekἘὰν δὲ ταπεινωθῇ ὁ ἀδελφός σου παρὰ σοὶ, καὶ πραθῇ σοι, οὐ δουλεύσει σοι δουλείαν οἰκέτου.

ThomsonHe shall be with thee as a hireling, or a sojourner. Until the year of the release he shall work for thee,

Thomsonand in the year of the release he shall go out, and his children with him, and shall go to his own family—to his paternal possession he shall haste away.

BrentonAnd of the sons of the sojourners that are among you, of these ye shall buy and of their relations, all that shall be in your lands; let them be to you for a possession.

Thomsonafter he is sold he shall have a right to be redeemed. One of his brethren may redeem him,

Thomsonhis uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any of his blood relations, of the same tribe, may redeem him; and if he be able he may redeem himself.

BrentonA brother of his father, or son of his father's brother shall redeem him; or let one of his near kin of his tribe redeem him, and if he should be rich and redeem himself,

ThomsonIn which case he shall settle with him who purchased him, from the year he sold himself, to the year of the release, and the price of his purchase shall be as the yearly wages of a hired servant for the years he is to be with him.

Brentonthen shall he calculate with his purchaser from the year that he sold himself to him until the year of release: and the money of his purchase shall be as that of a hireling, he shall be with him from year to year.

ThomsonAnd if any one hath many years to serve, for them he shall pay the rates of redemption, on account of the money paid for him;

BrentonAnd if any have a greater number of years than enough, according to these he shall pay his ransom out of his purchase-money.

GreekἘὰν δέ τινι πλεῖον τῶν ἐτῶν ᾖ, πρὸς ταῦτα ἀποδώσει τὰ λύτρα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀργυρίου τῆς πράσεως αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonand if but few years remain to the year of release, he shall settle with him according to those years, and pay the rates of his redemption.

BrentonAnd if but a little time be left of the years to the year of release, then shall he reckon to him according to his years, and shall pay his ransom

ThomsonAs a servant hired from year to year, he shall be with him; and thou shalt not suffer him to be oppressed with labour in thy sight.

ThomsonIf he be not redeemed in any of these ways, in the year of the release he shall go out, and his children with him;
