1
ThomsonI WAITED patiently for the Lord and He attended to me and heard my prayer:
BrentonFor the end, a Psalm of David.
2
Thomsonand brought me up from a horrible pit and from miry clay; and set my feet on a rock and directed my steps,
BrentonBlessed is the man who thinks on the poor and needy: the Lord shall deliver him in an evil day.
3
Thomsonand put in my mouth a new song—a hymn to our God. Many will see and be struck with awe, and trust in the Lord.
BrentonMay the Lord preserve him and keep him alive, and bless him on the earth, and not deliver him into the hands of his enemy.
4
ThomsonHappy the man, whose hope is the name of the Lord, and who hath not looked to vanities and lying fooleries.
BrentonMay the Lord help him upon the bed of his pain; thou hast made all his bed in his sickness.
5
ThomsonMany are Thy wonders which thou, O Lord my God, hast wrought; and for Thy thoughts there is none to be compared to Thee. I have declared and spoken. They are multiplied beyond computation.
BrentonI said, O Lord, have mercy upon me; heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.
6
ThomsonSacrifice and offerings Thou didst not desire, but preparedst for me a body; whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin Thou didst not require.
BrentonMine enemies have spoken evil against me, saying, When shall he die, and his name perish?
GreekΟἱ ἐχθροί μου εἶπαν κακά μοι, πότε ἀποθανεῖται καὶ ἀπολεῖται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ;
7
ThomsonThen I said, Behold I come; (in the volume of a book it is written respecting me)
BrentonAnd if he came to see me, his heart spoke vainly; he gathered iniquity to himself; he went forth and spoke in like manner.
8
Thomsonto perform, O my God, Thy will, I was determined, even that law of Thine, within my heart.
BrentonAll my enemies whispered against me; against me they devised my hurt.
9
ThomsonI have published the good news of Thy righteousness, in a great congregation. Behold I will not refrain my lips; Thou, O Lord, knowest my righteousness.
BrentonThey denounced a wicked word against me, saying, Now that he lies, shall he not rise up again?
GreekΛόγον παράνομον κατέθεντο κατʼ ἐμοῦ, μὴ ὁ κοιμώμενος οὐχὶ προσθήσει τοῦ ἀναστῆναι;
10
ThomsonI have not hid Thy truth in my heart, but have mentioned Thy salvation—I have not concealed Thy mercy and Thy truth from a great congregation.
BrentonFor even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, lifted up his heel against me.
11
ThomsonWithhold not Thou then, O Lord, Thy tender mercies from me. Thy mercy and Thy truth have continually upheld me.
BrentonBut thou, O Lord, have compassion upon me, and raise me up, and I shall requite them.
12
ThomsonBecause evils without number encompassed me—mine iniquities had overtaken me, therefore I was notable to look up; they were multiplied above the hairs of my head, therefore my heart failed me.
BrentonBy this I know that thou hast delighted in me, because mine enemy shall not rejoice over me.
13
ThomsonBe pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. O Lord, draw near to my assistance.
BrentonBut thou didst help me because of mine innocence, and hast established me before thee for ever.
14
ThomsonLet them who seek my life to destroy it, be shamed and confounded together. Let them be turned back and shamed who wish me evil;
BrentonBlessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. So be it, so be it.
