ThomsonGIVE ear, O shepherd of Israel! Who leadest Joseph like a flock—Thou who art enthroned on the cherubim;

Thomsonshine forth before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasses: stir up Thy strength and come for our salvation.
BrentonRejoice ye in God our helper; shout aloud to the God of Jacob.
GreekἈγαλλιᾶσθε τῷ Θεῷ τῷ βοηθῷ ἡμῶν, ἀλαλάξατε τῷ Θεῷ Ἰακώβ.

ThomsonTurn us, O God; and let Thy face shine; and we shall be saved.
BrentonTake a psalm, and produce the timbrel, the pleasant psaltery with the harp.

ThomsonO Lord, the God of hosts! How long wilt Thou continue Thine anger, against the prayer of this servant of Thine?
BrentonBlow the trumpet at the new moon, in the glorious day of your feast.
GreekΣαλπίσατε ἐν νεομηνίᾳ σάλπιγγι, ἐν εὐσήμῳ ἡμέρᾳ ἑορτῆς ὑμῶν.

ThomsonHow long wilt Thou feed us with bread of tears; and give us tears to drink by measure?
BrentonFor this is an ordinance for Israel, and a statute of the God of Jacob.
GreekὍτι πρόσταγμα τῷ Ἰσραήλ ἐστι, καὶ κρίμα τῷ Θεῷ Ἰακώβ.

ThomsonThou hast made us a mocking stock to our neighbours: and our enemies have derided us.
BrentonHe made it to be a testimony in Joseph, when he came forth out of the land of Egypt: he heard a language which he understood not.
GreekΜαρτύριον ἐν τῷ Ἰωσὴφ ἔθετο αὐτὸν, ἐν τῷ ἐξελθεῖν αὐτὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου· γλῶσσαν ἣν οὐκ ἔγνω, ἤκουσεν.

ThomsonO Lord, the God of hosts, bring us back; and let Thy face shine and we shall be saved.
BrentonHe removed his back from burdens: his hands slaved in making the baskets.
GreekἈπέστησεν ἀπὸ ἄρσεων τὸν νῶτον αὐτοῦ· αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κοφίνῳ ἐδούλευσαν.

ThomsonThou has brought a vine out of Egypt: Thou hast cast out nations and planted it.
BrentonThou didst call upon me in trouble, and I delivered thee; I heard thee in the secret place of the storm: I proved thee at the water of Strife. Pause.
GreekἘν θλίψει ἐπεκαλέσω με καὶ ἐῤῥυσάμην σε· ἐπήκουσά σου ἐν ἀποκρύφῳ καταιγίδος, ἐδοκίμασά σε ἐπὶ ὕδατος ἀντιλογίας· διάψαλμα.

ThomsonThou didst prepare the way before it; and plant its roots and the land was filled:
BrentonHear, my people, and I will speak to thee, O Israel; and I will testify to thee: if thou wilt hearken to me;
GreekἌκουσον λαός μου καὶ λαλήσω σοι, Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ διαμαρτύρομαί σοι· ἐὰν ἀκούσῃς μου,

Thomsonand its shade obscured mountains: and its branchy shoots, the cedars of God.
Brentonthere shall be no new god in thee; neither shalt thou worship a strange god.
Greekοὐκ ἔσται ἐν σοὶ θεὸς πρόσφατος, οὐδὲ προσκυνήσεις θεῷ ἀλλοτρίῳ.

ThomsonIt extended its branches quite to the sea; and its spreading boughs quite to the river.
BrentonFor I am the Lord thy God, that brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
GreekἘγὼ γάρ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου, ὁ ἀναγαγών σε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, πλάτυνον τὸ στόμα σου καὶ πληρώσω αὐτό.

ThomsonWhy hast Thou broken down its hedge; that all who pass by the way, may pluck it?
BrentonBut my people hearkened not to my voice; and Israel gave no heed to me.
GreekΚαὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν ὁ λαός μου τῆς φωνῆς μου, καὶ Ἰσραὴλ οὐ προσέσχε μοι.

ThomsonThe boar from the forest hath laid it waste; and a savage beast hath devoured it.
BrentonSo I let them go after the ways of their own hearts: they will go on in their own ways.
GreekΚαὶ ἐξαπέστειλα αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα τῶν καρδιῶν αὐτῶν, πορεύσονται ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτῶν.

ThomsonO God of hosts, return we beseech Thee; look down from heaven and see and visit this vine:
BrentonIf my people had hearkened to me, if Israel had walked in my ways,
GreekΕἰ ὁ λαός μου ἤκουσέ μου, Ἰσραὴλ ταῖς ὁδοῖς μου εἰ ἐπορεύθη,

Thomsonand repair that which Thy right hand hath planted—even for the son of man, whom Thou madest strong for Thyself.
BrentonI should have put down their enemies very quickly, and should have laid my hand upon those that afflicted them.
Greekἐν τῷ μηδενὶ ἂν τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτῶν ἐταπείνωσα, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς θλίβοντας αὐτοὺς ἐπέβαλον ἂν τὴν χεῖρά μου.

ThomsonIt is burned up with fire and rooted up. At the rebuke of Thy countenance are they to perish?
BrentonThe Lord's enemies should have lied to him: but their time shall be for ever.
GreekΟἱ ἐχθροὶ Κυρίου ἐψεύσαντο αὐτῷ, καὶ ἔσται ὁ καιρὸς αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,

ThomsonO let Thy hand be on the man of Thy right hand—on the son of man whom Thou hast made strong for Thyself:
BrentonAnd he fed them with the fat of wheat; and satisfied them with honey out of the rock.
