ThomsonWHEN Chiram king of Tyre sent his servants to anoint Solomon in the room of his father David, because Chiram continued to love David all his days,
BrentonAnd thus the officers provided king Solomon: and they execute every one in his month all the orders for the table of the king, they omit nothing. And they carried the barley and the straw for the horses and the chariots to the place where the king might be, each according to his charge.
GreekΚαὶ ἐχορήγουν οἱ καθεστάμενοι οὕτως τῷ βσαιλεῖ Σαλωμών· καὶ πάντα τὰ διαγγέλματα ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ βασιλέως ἕκαστος μῆνα αὐτοῦ, οὐ παραλλάσσουσι λόγον. Καὶ τὰς κριθὰς καὶ τὸ ἄχυρον τοῖς ἵπποις καὶ τοῖς ἅρμασιν ᾖρον εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ ἂν ᾖ ὁ βασιλεὺς, ἕκαστος κατὰ τὴν σύνταξιν αὐτοῦ.

Thomsontherefore Solomon sent to Chiram saying,
BrentonAnd these were the requisite supplies for Solomon: in one day thirty measures of fine flour, and sixty measures of fine pounded meal,
GreekΚαὶ ταῦτα τὰ δέοντα τῷ Σαλωμών· ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ τριάκοντα κόροι σεμιδάλεως, καὶ ἑξήκοντα κόροι ἀλεύρου κεκοπανισμένου,

ThomsonThou knowest that my father could not build a house to the name of the Lord my God, on account of the wars with those around him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.
Brentonand ten choice calves, and twenty pastured oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides stags, and choice fatted does.
Greekκαὶ δέκα μόσχοι ἐκλεκτοὶ, καὶ εἴκοσι βόες νομάδες, καὶ ἑκατὸν πρόβατα, ἐκτὸς ἐλάφων, καὶ δορκάδων ἐκλεκτῶν σιτευτά.

ThomsonBut now the Lord my God hath given me rest round about. I have no adversary, nor any evil occurrence.
BrentonFor he had dominion on this side the river, and he was at peace on all sides round about.
GreekὍτι ἦν ἄρχων πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ, καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ εἰρήνη ἐκ πάντων τῶν μερῶν κυκλόθεν.

ThomsonWith respect to the cedar, and fir timber, my servants shall bring it down from Lebanon to the sea; and I will send it in rafts to the place which thou shalt appoint, and land it there that thou mayst take it away. And thou wilt accomplish my pleasure in supplying my household with bread.
BrentonAnd the Lord gave understanding to Solomon, and very much wisdom, and enlargement of heart, as the sand on the seashore.
GreekΚαὶ ἔδωκε Κύριος φρόνησιν τῷ Σαλωμὼν καὶ σοφίαν πολλὴν σφόδρα καὶ χύμα καρδίας, ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἡ παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν.

ThomsonSo Chiram furnished Solomon with cedar and fir timber to his utmost wish.
BrentonAnd Solomon abounded greatly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Egypt.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπληθύνθη Σαλωμὼν σφόδρα ὑπὲρ τὴν φρόνησιν πάντων ἀρχαίων ἀνθρώπων, καὶ ὑπὲρ πάντας φρονίμους Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonAnd Solomon gave Chiram, twenty thousand cores of wheat for his household, and twenty thousand baths of expressed oil. This Solomon gave to Chiram every year.
BrentonAnd he was wiser than all other men: and he was wiser than Gæthan the Zarite, and than Ænan, and than Chalcad and Darala the sons of Mal.
GreekΚαὶ ἐσοφίσατο ὑπὲρ πάντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους· καὶ ἐσοφίσατο ὑπὲρ Γαιθὰν τὸν Ζαρίτην, καὶ τὸν Αἰνὰν, καὶ τὸν Χαλκὰδ καὶ Δαράλα υἱοὺς Μάλ.

ThomsonAnd the Lord gave Solomon wisdom as he said to him. And there was peace between Chiram and Solomon and they made a league between them.
BrentonAnd Solomon spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were five thousand.

ThomsonAnd the king made a levy out of all Israel, and the levy was thirty thousand men.
BrentonAnd he spoke of trees, from the cedar in Libanus even to the hyssop which comes out through the wall: he spoke also of cattle, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fishes.

ThomsonThese he sent to Lebanon, ten thousand every month, by turns, so that they were one month at Lebanon, and two at home. And Adoniram was over this levy.
BrentonAnd all the nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and ambassadors from all the kings of the earth, as many as heard of his wisdom.

BrentonAnd Solomon took to himself the daughter of Pharao to wife, and brought her into the city of David until he had finished the house of the Lord, and his own house, and the wall of Jerusalem.

BrentonThen went up Pharao the king of Egypt, and took Gazer, and burnt it and the Chananite dwelling in Mergab; and Pharao gave them as a dowry to his daughter the wife of Solomon: and Solomon rebuilt Gazer.

ThomsonAnd Solomon had seventy thousand men who carried burdens, and eighty thousand hewers of stone, in the mountains,

Thomsonexclusive of the officers who superintended the works of Solomon, and who amounted to three thousand six hundred. And these workmen were three years preparing the stone and the timber.
BrentonAnd Solomon sent to Chiram, saying,

ThomsonNow in the four hundred and fortieth year of the departure of the Israelites out of Egypt, in the fourth year and second month of king Solomon’s reign over Israel, the king having given orders for bringing great costly stones for the foundation of the house, even hewn stones;
BrentonThou knewest my father David, that he could not build a house to the name of the Lord my God because of the wars that compassed him about, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.

Thomsonand the men of Solomon and those of Chiram having hewn them, they began laying them.
BrentonAnd now the Lord my God has given me rest round about; there is no one plotting against me, and there is no evil trespass against me.
GreekΚαὶ νῦν ἀνέπαυσε Κύριος ὁ Θεός μου ἐμοὶ κυκλόθεν, οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπίβουλος καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἁμάρτημα πονηρόν.

BrentonAnd, behold, I intend to build a house to the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord God spoke to my father David, saying, Thy son whom I will set on thy throne in thy place, he shall build a house to my name.

BrentonAnd now command, and let men cut wood for me out of Libanus: and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants, and I will give thee the wages of thy service, according to all that thou shalt say, because thou knowest that we have no one skilled in cutting timber like the Sidonians.

BrentonAnd it came to pass, as soon as Chiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be God to-day, who has given to David a wise son over this numerous people.
