ThomsonHEAR, O Israel! Thou art now about to cross the Jordan, to go in to possess nations much greater and stronger than you, large cities, which are walled up to the sky,
BrentonHear, O Israel: Thou goest this day across Jordan to inherit nations greater and stronger than yourselves, cities great and walled up to heaven;

Thomsona people great and numerous, and of great stature, the children of Enak, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard it said, Who can stand before the sons of Enak?

ThomsonKnow therefore this day, that the Lord thy God will Himself march before thee. He is a consuming fire. He will destroy them. He will cause them to turn back from before thy face, and will destroy them speedily, as the Lord hath said to thee.
BrentonAnd thou shalt know to-day, that the Lord thy God he shall go before thy face: he is a consuming fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall turn them back before thee, and shall destroy them quickly, as the Lord said to thee.

ThomsonNow when the Lord thy God hath destroyed those nations from before thee, speak not in thy heart, saying, On the account of my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this good land.
BrentonSpeak not in thine heart, when the Lord thy God has destroyed these nations before thy face, saying, For my righteousness the Lord brought me in to inherit this good land.
GreekΜὴ εἴπῃς ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου ἐν τῷ ἐξαναλῶσαι Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου τὰ ἔθνη ταῦτα πρὸ προσώπου σου, λέγων, διὰ τὴν δικαιοσύνην μου εἰσήγαγέ με Κύριος κληρονομῆσαι τὴν γὴν τὴν ἀγαθὴν ταύτην.

ThomsonIt is not on the account of thy righteousness, nor for the sanctity of thy heart, that thou goest in to possess their land; but, because of the wickedness of those nations, the Lord will drive them out from before thee, and that He may establish His covenant which the Lord made with our fathers—with Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob.
BrentonNot for thy righteousness, nor for the holiness of thy heart, dost thou go in to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord will destroy them from before thee, and that he may establish the covenant, which the Lord sware to our fathers, to Abraam, and to Isaac, and to Jacob.

ThomsonKnow therefore this day, that it is not for thy righteousness that the Lord thy God giveth thee that good land for a possession; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
BrentonAnd thou shalt know to-day, that it is not for thy righteousnesses the Lord thy God gives thee this good land to inherit, for thou art a stiff-necked people.
GreekΚαὶ γνώσῃ σήμερον, ὅτι οὐχὶ διὰ τὰς δικαιοσύνας σου Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου δίδωσί σοι τὴν γῆν τὴν ἀγαθὴν ταύτην κληρονομῆσαι, ὅτι λαὸς σκληροτράχηλος εἶ.

ThomsonRemember—never forget how often thou hast provoked to wrath the Lord thy God, in the wilderness. From the day you came out of Egypt, till your coming to this place, you have gone on in a course of rebellion against the Lord.
BrentonRemember, forget not, how much thou provokedst the Lord thy God in the wilderness: from the day that ye came forth out of Egypt, even till ye came into this place, ye continued to be disobedient toward the Lord.
GreekΜνήσθητι, μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ ὅσα παρώξυνας Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· ἀφʼ ἧς ἡμέρας ἐξήλθετε ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἤλθετε εἰς τὸν τόπον τοῦτον, ἀπειθοῦντες διετελεῖτε τὰ πρὸς Κύριον.

ThomsonAt Choreb you provoked the Lord, so that the anger of the Lord was kindled against you, to destroy you utterly.
BrentonAlso in Choreb ye provoked the Lord, and the Lord was angry with you to destroy you;

ThomsonWhen I went up the mountain to receive the tables of stone—the tables of the covenant which the Lord had made with you. Now I was on the mount forty days, and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water;
Brentonwhen I went up into the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant, which the Lord made with you, and I was in the mountain forty days and forty nights, I ate no bread and drank no water.

Thomsonand the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, written with the finger of God—upon them indeed were written all the words which the Lord had spoken to you at the mount, on the day of the solemn assembly.

Thomsonthe Lord said to me, Arise, go down quickly from this place, for thy people, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt, have transgressed. They have gone aside quickly out of the way, to which thou didst enjoin them, and have made for themselves a molten image.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt have transgressed; they have gone aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them, and have made themselves a molten image.

ThomsonMoreover the Lord spoke to me, saying, I have spoken to thee once and again and said, I have seen this people, and behold it is a stiffnecked people;

Thomsonnow therefore let me utterly destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make thee a nation, great and powerful, and much more numerous than this.

ThomsonWhereupon I turned, and came down from the mount. Now the mount was blazing with fire up to heaven, and I had in my two hands the two tables of the testimonies.
BrentonAnd I turned and went down from the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to heaven; and the two tables of the testimonies were in my two hands.

ThomsonAnd when I saw that you had sinned before the Lord your God, and that you had made for yourselves a molten image, and had turned aside from the way in which the Lord had commanded you to walk; having hold of the two tables, I threw them out of my hands and broke them before your eyes.
BrentonAnd when I saw that ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made to yourselves a molten image, and had gone astray out of the way, which the Lord commanded you to keep;
GreekΚαὶ ἰδὼν ὅτι ἡμάρτετε ἐναντίον Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐποιήσατε ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς χωνευτόν, καὶ παρέβητε ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ, ἧς ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ὑμῖν ποιεῖν·

Brentonthen I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before you.
Greekκαὶ ἐπιλαβόμενος τῶν δύο πλακῶν, ἔῤῥιψα αὐτὰς ἀπὸ τῶν δύο χειρῶν μου, καὶ συνέτριψα ἐναντίον ὑμῶν.

ThomsonThen I made supplication before the Lord, a second time, as I had done before, forty days and forty nights—(I neither ate bread nor drank water)—for your sins which you had committed by doing evil in the sight of the Lord God, to provoke Him to wrath.
BrentonAnd I made my petition before the Lord as also at the first forty days and forty nights: I ate no bread and drank no water, on account of all your sins which ye sinned in doing evil before the Lord God to provoke him.
GreekΚαὶ ἐδεήθην ἐναντίον Κυρίου δεύτερον καθάπερ καὶ τὸ πρότερον τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας, ἄρτον οὐκ ἔφαγον καὶ ὕδωρ οὐκ ἔπιον, περὶ πασῶν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ὑμῶν ὧν ἡμάρτετε ποιῆσαι τὸ πονηρὸν ἐναντίον Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ παροξῦναι αὐτόν.

ThomsonEven now I tremble on account of the wrath and indignation. For the anger of the Lord was kindled against you, to destroy you utterly.
BrentonAnd I was greatly terrified because of the wrath and anger, because the Lord was provoked with you utterly to destroy you; yet the Lord hearkened to me at this time also.
GreekΚαὶ ἔκφοβός εἰμι διὰ τὸν θυμόν καὶ τὴν ὀργὴν, ὅτι παρωξύνθη Κύριος ἐφʼ ὑμῖν τοῦ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι ὑμᾶς· καὶ εἰσήκουσε Κύριος ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ.

ThomsonBut the Lord hearkened to me at that time also. Even against Aaron, His wrath was kindled to destroy him; But I prayed for Aaron also at that time.
BrentonAnd he was angry with Aaron to destroy him utterly, and I prayed for Aaron also at that time.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπὶ Ἀαρὼν ἐθυμώθη ἐξολοθρεῦσαι αὐτόν, καὶ ηὐξάμην καὶ περὶ Ἀαρὼν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ.

ThomsonNow I had taken your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire; and having stamped, and ground it, till it was very fine, and like dust, I threw the dust into the torrent which ran down out of the mount.
BrentonAnd your sin which ye had made, even the calf, I took, and burnt it with fire, and pounded it and ground it down till it became fine; and it became like dust, and I cast the dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.
GreekΚαὶ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ὑμῶν, ἣν ἐποιήσατε, τὸν μόσχον ἔλαβον αὐτὸν, καὶ κατέκαυσα αὐτὸν ἐν πυρί, καὶ συνέκοψα αὐτὸν καταλέσας σφόδρα ἕως ἐγένετο λεπτόν, καὶ ἐγένετο ὡσεὶ κονιορτός· καὶ ἔῤῥιψα τὸν κονιορτὸν εἰς τὸν χειμάῤῥουν τὸν καταβαίνοντα ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους.

ThomsonAt the places called Burning also, and at Temptation, and at Monuments of Longing Desire, you provoked the Lord.
BrentonAlso in the burning, and in the temptation, and at the graves of lust, ye provoked the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ ἐν τῷ ἐμπυρισμῷ, καὶ ἐν τῷ πειρασμῷ, καὶ ἐν τοῖς μνήμασι τῆς ἐπιθυμίας παροξύναντες ἦτε Κύριον.

ThomsonAnd when the Lord sent you from Kades-Barne, saying, Go up, and take possession of the land which I give you, you disobeyed the command of the Lord your God, and did not confide in Him, nor hearken to His voice.
BrentonAnd when the Lord sent you forth from Cades Barne, saying, Go up and inherit the land which I give to you, then ye disobeyed the word of the Lord your God, and believed him not, and hearkened not to his voice.
GreekΚαὶ ὅτε ἐξαπέστειλεν ὑμᾶς Κύριος ἐκ Κάδης Βαρνὴ, λέγων, ἀνάβητε καὶ κληρονομήσατε τὴν γῆν, ἣν δίδωμι ὑμῖν, καὶ ἠπειθήσατε τῷ ῥήματι Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ, καὶ οὐκ εἰσηκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonYou have been disobedient to the commands of the Lord, from the day He made Himself known to you.
BrentonYe were disobedient in the things relating to the Lord from the day in which he became known to you.
GreekἈπειθοῦντες ἦτε τὰ πρὸς Κύριον ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἧς ἐγνώσθη ὑμῖν.

ThomsonWhen I was making supplication before the Lord, forty days, and forty nights, as I had done before (for the Lord spoke of destroying you utterly,
BrentonAnd I prayed before the Lord forty days and forty nights, the number that I prayed before, for the Lord said that he would utterly destroy you.
GreekΚαὶ ἐδεήθην ἔναντι Κυρίου τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας, ὅσας ἐδεήθην· εἶπε γὰρ Κύριος ἐξολοθρεῦσαι ὑμᾶς.

ThomsonI prayed to God, and said, O Lord, Thou King of all the gods, destroy not Thy people, and Thy heritage, whom Thou hast redeemed, whom Thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, with Thy mighty power, and with Thy strong hand, and with Thine outstretched arm.
BrentonAnd I prayed to God, and said, O Lord, King of gods, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, whom thou didst redeem, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with thy great power, and with thy strong hand, and with thy high arm.

ThomsonRemember Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, Thy servants, to whom Thou didst swear by Thyself. Look not upon the stubbornness of this people, nor upon their wickedness, and their sins,,
BrentonRemember Abraam, and Isaac, and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thyself: look not upon the hardness of heart of this people, and their impieties, and their sins.
GreekΜνήσθητι Ἁβραὰμ καὶ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακὼβ τῶν θεραπόντων σου, οἷς ὤμοσας κατὰ σεαυτοῦ· μὴ ἐπιβλέψῃς ἐπὶ τὴν σκληρότητα τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου, καὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματα, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἁμαρτήματα αὐτῶν.

Thomsonlest they who dwell in the land, out of which Thou hast brought them, should speak, saying, Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He promised them; and because He hated them, He led them out into the wilderness to kill them.
BrentonLest the inhabitants of the land whence thou broughtest us out speak, saying, Because the Lord could not bring them into the land of which he spoke to them, and because he hated them, has he brought them forth to slay them in the wilderness.
GreekΜὴ εἴπωσιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν ὅθεν ἐξήγαγες ἡμᾶς ἐκεῖθεν, λέγοντες, παρὰ τὸ μὴ δύνασθαι Κύριον εἰσαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, καὶ παρὰ τὸ μισῆσαι αὐτοὺς, ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτούς.

ThomsonNow these are Thy people, and Thy inheritance, Whom Thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, with Thy mighty power, and with Thy strong hand, and with Thine outstretched arm.
BrentonAnd these are thy people and thy portion, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with thy great strength, and with thy mighty hand, and with thy high arm.
GreekΚαὶ οὗτοι λαός σου καὶ κλῆρός σου, οὓς ἐξήγαγες ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ἐν τῇ ἰσχύϊ σου τῇ μεγάλῃ, καὶ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου τῇ κραταιᾷ, καὶ ἐν τῷ βραχίονί σου τῷ ὑψηλῷ.
