BrentonAnd the children of Ruben and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Galaad; and the place was a place for cattle:

Thomsonand the children of Gad, had a great multitude of cattle, and having taken a view of the country of Jazer, and the region of Galaad, and seen that it was a place fit for stock, the Reubenites and the Gadites came to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the chiefs of the congregation and said,
Brentonand the children of Ruben and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,

4
Thomsonthe land which the Lord delivered up before the children of Israel, is a land fit for raising stock, and thy servants have cattle;
Brentonthe land which the Lord has delivered up before the children of Israel, is pasture land, and thy servants have cattle.
5
Thomsonif therefore, said they, we have found favour in thy sight, let this land be given to thy servants for a possession, and cause us not to cross the Jordan.
BrentonAnd they said, If we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given to thy servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over Jordan.
6
ThomsonWhereupon Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, Must your brethren go to war, and you sit still here?
BrentonAnd Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς τοῖς υἱοῖς Γὰδ καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ῥουβὴν, οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ὑμῶν πορεύονται εἰς τὸν πόλεμον, καὶ ὑμεῖς καθήσεσθε αὐτοῦ;
7
ThomsonBesides, why do you divert the thoughts of the Israelites from crossing over into the land which the Lord giveth them?
BrentonAnd why do ye pervert the minds of the children of Israel, that they should not cross over into the land, which the Lord gives them?
GreekΚαὶ ἱνατί διαστρέφετε τὰς διανοίας τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ μὴ διαβῆναι εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἣν Κύριος δίδωσιν αὐτοῖς;
8
ThomsonDid not your fathers do so, when I sent them from Kades-Barne to view the land?
BrentonDid not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Cades Barne to spy out the land?
GreekΟὐχ οὕτως ἐποίησαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, ὅτε ἀπέστειλα αὐτοὺς ἐκ Κάδης Βαρνὴ κατανοῆσαι τὴν γῆν;
9
ThomsonWhen they had passed through the valley of grapes, and viewed the land, they discouraged the heart of the Israelites from going to the land which the Lord gave them;
Brentonand they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land, which the Lord gave them.
10
Thomsonand the anger of the Lord was kindled that day, and He swore saying,

11
ThomsonThese men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upwards, who know good and evil, shall not see the land, which I with an oath promised to Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob (for they have not followed Me);
BrentonSurely these men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I sware to give to Abraam and Isaac and Jacob, for they have not closely followed after me:
12
Thomsonexcept Chaleb, son of Jephonne, who separated himself from them, and Joshua, son of Naue, because they followed the Lord.
Brentonsave Caleb the son of Jephonne, who was set apart, and Joshua the son of Naue, for they closely followed after the Lord.

ThomsonSo the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He led them about in the wilderness forty years, until all that generation, who had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.
BrentonAnd the Lord was very angry with Israel; and for forty years he caused them to wander in the wilderness, until all the generation which did evil in the sight of the Lord was extinct.
14
ThomsonBehold you are risen up in your fathers’ stead, a set of sinful men, to augment the wrath of the Lord against Israel.

15
ThomsonFor by turning away from Him, to cause Him to leave you still in the wilderness, you will transgress against the whole congregation.
BrentonFor ye will turn away from him to desert him yet once more in the wilderness, and ye will sin against this whole congregation.

19
ThomsonMoreover we will not take a share with them of the land beyond the river Jordan, because we have got our share on the eastern side of the Jordan.
BrentonAnd we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of Jordan and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond Jordan eastward.
